The upshot is that an integrated money market and payments system requires some basic regulation concerning mutual acceptance and financial stability. This is an important lesson when thinking about whether privately issued stablecoins will become a universally accepted means of payment.

The Banknote Act of 1881 led to a sudden convergence of discount rates. The legislation unified banknotes' denomination and required universal acceptance at par. It introduced capital and liquidity requirements, as well as transparency rules, making note-issuing banks safer and more trustworthy.

However, the discount rates differed significantly across regions, and banknotes were often used only in the vicinity of the note-issuing bank, suggesting that financial markets were segmented.

The paper analyses money market integration using hand-collected daily (!) discount rates for six Swiss cities from 1846-1893. During this period, there was no central bank and, therefore, banknotes were issued and discount rates were set by private or cantonal banks.

Our approach has several advantages over existing high-frequency identification schemes. In particular, we only need daily financial market data. Additionally, the monetary policy shocks provide stronger instruments when employed in low-frequency macroeconomic models.

We disentangle multiple dimensions of these monetary policy shocks by imposing zero restrictions along the term structure of interest rates. This allows us to estimate the causal effects of these multiple dimensions using a recursive IV estimator.
