PSA from Gangsters of Capitalism
Footnote 15

15 This was false. As a journalist who'd been to Fascist Italy later recounted: "The author was employed as a courier by the Franco-Belgique Tours Company in the summer of 1930, the height of Mussolini's heyday, when a fascist guard rode on every train, and is willing to make an affidavit to the effect that most Italian trains on which he travelled were not on schedule-or near it.
There must be thousands who can support this attestation. It's a trifle, but it's worth nailing down." David Dudley, "The Problem with Mussolini and His Trains," Bloomberg, Nov. 15, 2016, www.bloomberg.com/news/ articles/2016-11-15/stop-saying-mussolini-made-the-trains-run-on-time.

Good question. At the level of the national party, I'd say 1) categorical opposition to all immigration enforcement, 2) land acknowledgements and other anti-American rhetoric, 3) willingness to countenance explicit racial discrimination in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (and/or the 14th Amendment), and 4) various minor positions on trans issues.
In terms of what people vote on, I'd say immigration and racial discrimination are much more important than land acknowledgements or trans issues. In terms of the actual future of the nation, I'd say that the ideology behind land acknowledgments -- which views America as a fundamentally illegitimate settler-colonialist entity whose dissolution is the only true path to historical and global justice -- is far more dangerous and damaging.
At the local level, there is some extremism connected to the Palestine movement, which is both deeply antisemitic and deeply anti-American.

How is this a real person
Bret: Don't dismiss what hasn't really been tried. People are looking for ways to fix our broken politics and the lousy choices it presents. This is the most obvious, and ultimately most practical, way, barring an improbable effort to make voting mandatory via a constitutional amendment. I propose a knock-and-drag, get-out-the-vote effort from Scarsdale to Rye; from West End Ave to Lexington; from Chilmark to Edgartown!
Frank: I'll take that as a joke and not an assertion that if only more rich people voted, all would be well!
Bret: Proposal is real; locations were for illustrative purposes only.

It’s like he asked ChatGPT “draft a message perfectly tailored to bring out the guillotines”
Bret: Millions of Americans, including me, not only hate the parties but also hate the party for which we typically vote. That means there's a market of the dissatisfied. I hear this all the time among my friends in New York City: They can't believe they're stuck with Zohran Mamdani as mayor, and they felt the same way about Eric Adams and Bill de Blasio before him. But when you ask them if they voted in the primaries, the usual answer is: Uh, no - we were on the Vineyard or in Greece. The point is that it's on them, or us, and the remedy is some civic entrepreneurship, philanthropically funded, to change this.

Also by day (and occasionally by night) he runs a Democratic Socialists of America-endorsed campaign for the New York State Assembly, knocking on doors in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, where he lives in a three-bedroom apartment with his two daughters and his wife, Rebecca, a teacher.
Some would find it difficult to bridge these categories. As self-avowed democratic socialists have burst into the spotlight, critics have been quick to slap the
"champagne socialist" label on anyone who dabbles in luxury goods. And opinions abound about what those aligned with left-wing causes should look like: Some expect a Karl Marx T-shirt or a workman's jacket and have slammed Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont for his $700 Burton coat or Rama Duwaji, the first lady of New York, for her borrowed $600 boots.

This is also false, @olivia-reingold.bsky.social. (Surprise!) 0.5% was just for one way of measuring. The report overall reported 1.3% malnutrition across the strip and over 2% in Deir al Balah. You also just straight up lied about the MENA stunting rate. It was 18% in 2024, not 26%. @thefp.com
At the rate of 0.5 percent, Gaza has one of the lowest rates of acute child malnutrition
in the region, according to an analysis by The Free Press of data from the World Bank and the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a UN-affiliated hunger-monitoring system. The researchers also concluded that about 12 percent of children in Gaza had stunting, or impaired growth and development that is the result of poor nutrition. That is less than half of the region's 26 percent
stunting rate, according to the latest report on child malnutrition by UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the World Bank.

Love to throw a “to be sure” graf in the middle of my famine denial that blows up the entire story around it like an Israeli JDAM in a refugee camp www.thefp.com/p/unicef-dat...
Alex de Waal, a British anthropologist and one of the world's foremost experts on
famine, told me that none of the new data were "cause to question the accuracy" of the IPC's previous famine declaration.
"Children can rebound very quickly from acute malnutrition," he wrote in an email,
"so with the food going into Gaza since the onset of the quasi-ceasefire, the low levels are unsurprising." The low stunting rates were the "single most encouraging finding" from the survey, he added, since they suggest that "among surviving children, the longer-term impact of the food crisis [is] not as severe as was feared."

Last thing I'Il tweet about this for the day, echoing points made by @talmonsmith and @Tyler_A_Harper and others: Arday's appointment was a skyscraper with an unfixable structural defect. It was going to collapse at some point -- that was a given. But there's a difference between a controlled demo and a sideways collapse that takes out a block's worth of inhabited buildings. My view is that from the moment Cambridge got the first email alerting them to problems in 2023, it acted in a manner that was very likely to increase the collateral damage. This doesn't mean Cambridge is 'responsible' for Arday's death, but it does make me frustrated that people are blaming this on journalists, even if I agree that certain tabloids acted in a characteristically bloodthirsty manner h

Self-serving argument, I know, but the people who *called attention to this scandal*, even if they did so disproportionately (and who decides that?), get little to no blame pie here, in my opinion.

The letter-writers called out Trump by name, noting that he is "a real threat to democracy." Williams justified his decision to nonetheless focus on the strongest
voices speaking out against Trump, at great personal risk, by telling the Times that their supposed illiberalism "both fueled and echoed" the president's.
It's a nonsensical statement. My pointing that out doesn't impinge on his right to say it.

The "intolerant climate" alleged in the open letter is the opposite of McCarthyism. The witch hunts of the Red Scare were made possible by McCarthy and HUAC's government power-the ability to intimidate, arrest, and persecute political opponents, rivals, and ordinary citizens. In short, they created a police state.
The people the letter seems to be aimed at
-protesters, activists, and those who sympathize with them-have far more in common with the people the McCarthyites attacked: opponents of segregation, LGBT folk, and anti-fascists. (A common reason for being fired during the scare was having supported efforts to help refugees from fascism during the 1936 Spanish Civil War.)R THE RACKET

The closest analogue to McCarthy living today, of course, is Roy Cohn's own protege: Donald Trump. No one has learned more (or less) from his example-to follow lies with more lies, to sow
paranoia, slander and defame at will, and use all the powers available to him in the police state for his benefit. Just this week, we have seen officers hounded out of jobs for upholding the law instead of the president's will, and threats to tax out of existence universities that refuse to
conform to his ideology.

If Mr. Arday isn't just a scholar, but a symbol of his university's commitment to social justice, perhaps that made it more difficult for Cambridge to examine its own role in his ascent — and to delay, by several damaging years, the full investigation Mr. Arday's case so obviously warranted.

This is purportedly a news article
More than 1,100 pages long and dating from 2019 to 2022, Dr. Fauci’s diary reads like a black comedy of manners in which a 79-year-old social-climbing scientist becomes the face of the government’s response to a pandemic and then the toast of the town — the toast of this town. As the death toll rises, so too does the doctor’s status and self-regard. He falls in with a fast crowd and becomes consumed by his own image.

It’s like Thackeray’s Vanity Fair crossed with The Plague by Camus.

democratic about
Democrats have spent the Trump era telling the American people that they're the only political force capable of defending the country from authoritarianism. That argument will be impossible to maintain if they countenance an organization that honors the legacy of the convicted cop killer Assata Shakur and calls for "solidarity" with North Korea. But criticizing the DSA will only go so far. When David Duke was the Republican candidate for governor in Louisiana in 1991, prominent Republicans, including President George H. W.
Bush, condemned the former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
Some explicitly backed his Democratic opponent, the legendarily corrupt Edwin Edwards. Although the GOP certainly had a moral obligation to distance itself from a hate-monger, doing so was also in the party's self-interest. Democrats, whose brand is viewed as too left-wing in five out of six Senate-battleground states, should be similarly wary of fanatics trying to infiltrate their ranks.
Open letters aren't enough. If the Democrats want to root out the party within their party, they will need to stop indulging the DSA's constant, passive-aggressive attempts to undermine them. This would require prohibiting DA members from joining their party and throwing out the DSA members already honeycombed within it. Four decades ago, Labour's Neil Kinnock expelled the extremist faction burrowing within his beloved party. If Democrats want to rescue their party, they may need to do the same.

If it had, Wilson might have been forced to admit he had supported annexing the Philippines, Hawaii, and Guam in 1898; and that while he believed the Philippines and Puerto Rico might eventually have self-rule, he had warned against giving "the generous gifts of complete individual liberty or the full-fangled institutions of American self-govern-ment" to "undeveloped peoples, still in the childhood of their political growth." Nor was he philosophically opposed to Frederick Jackson Turner's brand of expansionism. To the contrary, Wilson had been an early, influential collaborator of Turner's, who helped shape his Frontier Thesis when he taught Turner as a graduate student at Johns Hopkins. *3
