Only ever seen them in domestic history displays. I suspect a lot got torn up for confetti 🎉. Old habits die hard though. My Mum would save butter papers & tins & jars were scraped unmercifully.

Got it I think. Not Springsteen. I think I'm hearing a bastardised mash-up of the Tom Waits & Rod Stewart versions of Tom Traubert's Blues. It's the melancholy made me think of Springsteen, I reckon he could make a good go of it.

I think food rationing ended in 1954, clothing & petrol a few years earlier. Some things that hadn't been rationed during the war were added to the list later - potatoes & bread (imagine how happy that made people feel).

I used to spend sports lessons in the school library from about the age of 14/15. The teachers could have put a stop to it, but my lack of interest/aptitude for sports was glaringly obvious. I think the staff knew where my time was better spent. I'm grateful for their willingness to bend.

My house is probably the tallest in the neighbourhood, sitting at the highest point (admittedly not very high). The bed is directly under the chimney stack. Imagine how well I sleep when the North Sea gales blow. A tapestry on one nail holds no fear for me. Other klonks & bonks however...

My Dad was going to take up flying light aircraft. He had a couple of lessons. Once my Mum realised he was serious he was grounded.

They could fly with one pilot & just employ people like me to sit upfront & keep poking them with a sharp stick. Oh, & screaming, that tends to keep people on their toes.

No, it's good. I think there is a limit as to how long you should freeze it for (different for salted & unsalted), but mine is never in danger of lasting that long.

Apparently, the US soldiers stationed in a camp near my Mum's home would remark on how small & thin the locals looked. I never knew there was rationing in the US until I got a wartime copy of "America's Cookbook" which came with a ration recipes addendum.
