there's some inch resting callbacks in nanjo's p1 dialogue and p2ep contact answers, albeit it's all a result of nanjo's stubborn characterisation. after all, he's often the sort to hold others accountable even if he has nothing more than a hunch, and he views himself highly, even in negotiations

Kei Nanjo in Persona 1 PSP, in Thanatos Tower, in the room with the two chests, speaking to Yuriko. He says, "Hmph, as if we'd fall for that. We know all about your shenanigans." In fairness, he does after the first room with the torches, but he doesn't know what's up in this situation.

Kei Nanjo in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment in a demon contact, being asked, "What else do you know [about me, the demon]?" to which Kei Nanjo's answers are, "Your name must be Crowley!" (most honest, doesn't bluff), "All about your affairs with women!" (most dishonest, bluffing), and "I don't know anything about you!" (deflection).

each gate represents a stage of maya's grief, starting w separation (for her father's death), detachment (her embracing a happy persona to avoid facing that grief), parting (moving away from the p2is cast on the other side), then isolation (how maya's coped w her abandonment up until this point)

why does maya encounter all the gates that separate her from her allies in the EX dungeon? it's so she can face her avoidance [localised as anger], the aspect of samsara that rules her. as she avoids facing avoidance through the main story, going through the gates means facing her abandonment fears

Katsuya Suou in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, in Sumaru TV. He says to Maya Amano, "Anger [which should be avoidance], ignorance, and devotion... These are caused by emotion. From emotions, people spawn shadows, and that makes us human."

The Gate of Separation in the EX Dungeon, saying to Maya, "I am the Gate of Separation. The sorrow of parting is the only thing that will open the gate. Dost thou wish to pass?" The final line is a callback to Maki Sonomura's dialogue in the Sewers on Nanjo's Route.

ulala's a beautiful example of a character who grows over a narrative w strengths and flaws that feed one into another. she feels so deeply thanks to her jealousy and fury, but it's those feelings that bring her courage and a desire to change the world, so others won't have to suffer like she has

Ulala Serizawa in Persona 2 Innocent Sin, in GOLD as she faces down Youichi Makimura. In inverted colours, she stares him down, saying, "Can it, creep. Now that I found you, you're a dead man... shadow maya reveals all that maya represses, and one of those things in p2is is just how much her friendship w baofu influences her. maya downplays her closeness w baofu, to the point where she won't lead a duo contact w him in p2ep, but her shadow quotes his site's tagline when musing on nihilism

Shadow Maya in Persona 2 Innocent Sin, saying to Tatsuya Suou in a Satomi Tadashi store, "Rumors becoming reality? It may look that way from a certain angle, but rumors are man's dark side. Isn't that what's really becoming reality?"

mark and maki are both ppl pleasers w opposing approaches to lying contacts. when it comes to obvious lies, mark affirms his actions by backing himself, while maki agrees w w/e a demon might say. mark may well be trying to convince himself he's okay w lying to ppl, whereas maki's convincing others

lisa doesn't worry abt danger when ruled by emotion, similar to other members of the IS party. that said, one of the best examples of this though is in the air raid shelter, where her anger gets the better of her and she chases yasuo's voice into the shelter, despite her misgivings earlier

despite nanjo spending all game bribing demons w various items he has on hand, at times making promises he can't keep, he still treasures the value of naoya's most precious resources. after all, it's a show of growth that nanjo doesn't leap at the ambrosia, more restrained w what's irreplaceable

the night queen is specifically the snow queen when detached from her humanity, but what does this mean? her speech doesn't change, yet instead of fretting abt her persona and feelings, she's now a disciple of nihilism; things like rudeness and preference matter little now that she's godlike

The Snow Queen in Persona 1 PSP, in the Frozen Courtyard. She says, "Not to mention... isn't it rude to go around calling people monsters?" At this point, her name is 'Mask'.

The Snow Queen continues, saying, "I think I'd prefer... the Snow Queen. Very fitting for this mask, isn't it?"

The Night Queen after the party defeat Tomomi [and the Snow Queen by extension] in the Frozen Courtyard at St Hermelin, as she says, "No longer tied to my host or the mask I was bound to, I am finally free."

one way the p2 sides differ from each other is re: what trends take off. as lisa points out, it's trendy among young ppl to get tanned on the IS side; on the EP side, however, it's not nearly as fashionable, so katsuya's heard of it through his shady work. either way, nekomata will follow the trend!

when it comes to the atmosphere of maki's st hermelin, everyone picks up on the new vibe super fast. still, the party are still concerned w their own lives, like how maki's concerned abt her own world. elly wants to meet more demons, brown wants to be loved, and mark can't escape through the hole

one common thread throughout p2 games is the distrust of media narratives, especially around taking rumour as fact and propagating propaganda. in p2is, this manifests around media ethics reporting on rumour, but in p2ep it's a full blown plot point, where the media are bought by various interests

Maya Amano in Persona 2 Innocent Sin at Sumaru TV, saying to Tatsuya Suou, "Of course there are times when the media plays a part in spreading rumors. I've seen it happen several times during my career at Kismet..."

Maya adds, "But maybe we depend too much on the media."

Kei Nanjo in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, saying to Maya Amano, "So far we have discovered 11 countries... In each country, the New World Order is somehow involved in the government press."

lots of katsuya's dialogue is full of irony, especially around his ideals of justice twisting or turning back on him. he wants maya only to use her guns in self defense, but she holds shimazu hostage when katsuya falls into his trap; likewise, when he hopes to corner his bosses, his boss corners him

Katsuya Suou in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, saying to Maya Amano in Seven Sisters High, "Fine... this is an extreme circumstance. I'll let you have the guns he left behind. Use it only to protect yourself."

Ulala Serizawa in the Aoba Park Concert Hall once Katsuya's trapped, saying angrily to Captain Shimazu, "Tell us where Tatsuzou is! Ma-ya's got a really itchy trigger-finger, so don't mess with her!" Maya has a gun pointed to Shimazu's head, not in self defense; at this stage, Shimazu has been disarmed, and his troops are pointing at Katsuya, not her.

Katsuya, angry at the park bench in Aoba Park. He says, "If you don't talk, then we'll just bust into the station to corner Shimazu and Togashi."

when tatsuya says he's not katsuya's brother, it feels, to katsuya, like a denial of his identity. he centres himself around him so he can justify life choices w/o introspection, role in life lending itself to unconditional love and responsibility; still, if he's not tatsuya's brother, who is he?

Tatsuya Suou in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, sadly saying at the Narumi Marina, "I'm not... your little brother..."

Katsuya Suou angrily replies, "What the hell do you mean...!? You are my brother!! No matter what!!" Ulala Serizawa has to hold him back from Tatsuya.

Katsuya on the Kasugayama High roof, saying, "On the 'Other Side' I wasn't able to help... But not here! As the brother of Tatsuya, as a protector of Justice, I will aid you!" This is more grandiose than usual coming from Katsuya.

Katsuya in a demon contact, being asked, "What part would you want to play [in a TV show, as a metaphor for life]?" to which Katsuya replies, "A nice family member." His other answers are, "A loving boyfriend," (ooc, he shies away from romance), and "A cute dog," (deflection).

before the p1 party visit sebec, brown worries he'll become unpopular if he's not good enough to his peers, like before attending st hermelin. it comes off as self-obsession when naoya talks to him, but he's insistent on standing out and being a hero, yet he's insecure, even when hyping himself up

Brown adds, "Problem solved! I'll be a hero!"

being one of the most easily doomed npcs means tony's shop is an easy place for the party to discuss matters of fate, w their fates mirroring tony's doom unless they act to change things. that said, when their fates change, their perspectives shift, diverging from tony's clueless powerlessness

katsuya's got a thing abt achievement,,, maybe it's that his work won't take him seriously, or the fact he never got to pursue his dream, but he and his shadow often fret abt success, and projects his fixations w victory and life satisfaction onto others, never admitting how he feels in the process

it's why the sprites in his games have eyes, but the sprites in maya's (eternal punishment) don't. while tatsuya looks to the eyes to understand ppl, maya takes them in as a whole; "what's most important can't be seen w one's eyes," but it can be seen within them

tatsuya struggles to trust those he can't see the eyes of in p2is; as such, most characters he finds suspicious or hard to grasp the intentions of wear glasses. maya okamura's a good example of tatsuya being unable to trust intent, but he can't connect well w his brother, kaoru saga, or ma'am either

nanjo and elly's sqq experiences inform their p2ep motivations, even when they're at dead ends. nanjo, for instance, turns yamaoka's wisdom into practical advice (obtusely!), including in the justice contact, while elly uses others' devotion to further her own, especially when meeting strangers

Kei Nanjo in Persona 1 PSP's Snow Queen Quest, in a Frozen Warehouse as he says, "'Set your mind at ease that even the fire may seem cool and refreshing.'"

Nanjo in Smile Hirasaka in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, saying to the party, "How about burning some trash at the duct too? If we make a little smoke, it should be much more effective than just an alarm." This is slightly different to Elly's advice about making the fire alarm realistic with smoke, focusing on the burning.

when katsuya's coming to terms w the fact tatsuya's from another universe, he tries to defend him against any potential weaknesses. that means distracting baofu and ulala from tatsuya's anxiety in the hot room, and at the fake shrine, stopping tatsuya from "losing face," even if nobody but him cares

Tatsuya Suou in Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, in the Hot Room of the Torifune, saying to the party, "... I'm sorry. It was something that happened previously... So... I inadvertently..."

Katsuya Suou, after Baofu and Ulala Serizawa react in shock, says, "It's not use talking about what we thought! So what happened on the 'Other Side', Tatsuya!?" This deflects from Tatsuya's accident, but also shows he's just as anxious as Tatsuya.

Tatsuya in the golden Shrine room, sitting next to the altar sadly as Katsuya bandages up his hand. He says, "I'm sorry..."

Katsuya, forcefully, says, "Don't say anything. My brother doesn't lower his head for little things like this..." This is Katsuya trying to protect Tatsuya's cool reputation, but also showing he's more anguished at the prospect of Tatsuya having weaknesses that are so easy to exploit.
