Hey Charlene, would you mind taking this down? I want to reach out to the original publishing paid me folks to make sure this is ok with them. Thanks for reposting, though!

Just a note that the survey was accidentally still titled with the old title. it should be called "Advances Survey for Illustrated Children's Books" and that's been changed on the form!

It's anonymous, but to protect anonymity even more, since kidlit is a small world, I won't publish the results (or even look at them) unless we get a fair amount of responses. 50-ish maybe? IDK, I'll see.

On a related topic, I've been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Disney+ Percy Jackson series. Hope they stick with it to finish the first five books! The actors who play the main trio are all really great.

Just based on the popularity, I'm so surprised that neither Warriors nor WoF have been made into movies. They'd have to be animated, sure. And I bet that can make things harder than an easy realistic fiction kids' movie. But, they'd probably make a TON of money (and pull more kids into reading).

Three poop colored circles in a Venn diagram, 8705: mandates teaching propagandistic US history, HR 7661: will banned undefined "sexually oriented" materials, HR 2616 will mandate teachers to put trans and nb students. ALL 3 will ban books. ALL THREE are transphobic bs.

I don't have experience with this brand, but could you put something weighted on it to squash the water out? Like a piece of plywood that's got heavy weights on it?

Let's say you're working with something and you don't know for sure that it was AI, but either way, it feels like editing porridge (to me, it feels like editing a handful of sand). How would you approach it with the writer without hurting their feelings, just in case they HAD written it?

If you're thinking about using gen-AI to "write" books, this 🧵 is for you. I’m a highly experienced editor who’s been in the biz a long time. Recently I’ve had manuscripts come to me where the author has used gen-AI – not for writing, I’ve been assured, but for “structuring” or "organising"

...one said it was comparable to COVID levels of fear, either bc of war or ICE on campus or harassing their families (we're close to Minneapolis/SP, so a lot of kids have family who were in the thick of it). We also have a lot of queer students, so they were dealing with that shit as well.

For context, I'm not a prof, I'm an instructional designer. But I was talking with some profs last night, and they agreed this term is ROUGH. But they said for their students, they're observing a high level of stress and outright fear...

Every month, the DPIL sends free, high quality books to any kid 0-5 in the counties where it's set up, encouraging loving grownups to read to the children in their care, fostering connection between them and encouraging a life-long reading habit. Kids who read turn into adults who read.

Star Trek The Next Generation scene. We're in engineering with control panels and engineering stuff on the walls and whatnot. We see Picard and Worf, but Picard is a borgs! His whole body is worn in black spandex or rubber or something borgy and he looks to have been transformed into half robot half human, with tubes and wires and mechanics attached to his body and head, including half his face being covered in tech and wires, Phantom of the Opera style. (SING FOR ME, MY ANGEL CHRISTINE!) Picard's whole arm is also now a long metally tool doohickey with sharp smaller tools doohickeys sticking out of the end, and he's holding it to Worf threateningly. Worf, in gold uniform, stands like he's being held at gunpoint. Closed caption reads, "We only wish to raise quality of life." (Editors note, it goes without saying but FUCK ICE)
