Me, every single year, eight hours after getting my flu and COVID shots: I feel great! I think I’m just sailing through it this year! Me, every single year, fourteen hours after getting my flu and COVID shots: [shivering so hard in bed I knock my glasses off my nightstand]

I know we’ve all learned so much about sulfates and shampoo since the 90s but sometimes I am gripped by the urge to buy one (1) enormous bottle of Herbal Essences and use two (2) full handfuls and just suds away. Strip my oils, I DO NOT CARE! I smell like I’m shopping for baby barrettes at Claire’s!

Yes, put me in jail for googling about Aaron Sorkin’s bananas tan but my cellmate for life should be whoever wrote this opening line:

I went to the Paranormal Activity stage adaptation tonight—it was fun, more like a haunted house than a play but a very tight and eerie two hours—and Patti Lupone was in the audience and zero chills were gonna match that thrill, let me tell you.

It feels apt that the Mets season comes to a close with a 74-88 record approximately 16 hours into my nor’easter migraine that Just! Won’t! Quit! They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I’ll see you psychopaths in February. #lfgm

This was really scary, and to happen during such a special season for Young is horrendous. I hope he’s okay.

I don’t know why I was served an ad for this men’s quilted onesie, and I especially don’t know why Eddie Bauer gave it a butt.

Things I was frightened of as a child: 1. The test of the emergency alert system 2. The space aliens on Sesame Street, to the degree that anything resembling their gaping mouths was scary (laundry that was draped funny, empty shoes if I really looked at them long enough) 3. Anything medical

I won’t remember this Mets season for much, except for that it was the year my brain unstoppably sang most things Marcus Semien did to the tune of Rusted Root’s “Send Me On My Way.” Semien’s on third (He’s on third) Semien’s up next (He’s up next)

The very last 9/11 family member to read names at the ceremony (and on the broadcast) used his comment to ask Americans not to use the tragedy of his father’s death as an excuse to hate “our Muslim brothers and sisters,” and what a beautiful thing to do with your grief.

I remember feeling at the time stuck in a limbo between “am I watching something horrific?” and “is this happening to me?” And what I didn’t get then was that it was and would be happening to all of us, in vastly different degrees and shapes, with pain unevenly distributed here and around the world.

My dad was at the time a firefighter in the NYC suburbs and the cell phone networks were so overloaded, it took a few hours before I could call home to find out if he was there or not (he was not). I spent those hours trying to read the departments off firefighters’ jackets on the news.

Twenty-five years ago, I was a sophomore in college in Ohio who woke up for class to find a weird message on the college website about an attack in New York. I was still getting used to being away from my family, who are folks that don’t move far from each other.

This is almost too blue-wave-emoji to post, but I just realized that if you change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, the Great Lakes mnemonic has to go from HOMES to SHAME.

I can’t say enough good things about Chloe Troast’s very tiny (35 audience members in one room!) but also very large show Pepper Slit: Live! In Her Living Room, but you should see it before it closes if you are in NYC. It’s perfectly silly but also masterful. www.pepperslit.com

Eat up The Odyssey with a spoon if you like. Love every minute of it! Or roll your eyes to the heavens and go home on the train chewing on every clunky line like a gummy bear! It is not more virtuous to do the former, and steals nothing from no one to do the latter. Popular culture is in the making!

And I’m not even talking about hatewatching or MST3K-style riffing—though I relish those oppositions, too. I mean that there is delight to be found in tangling with a text that rubs you the wrong way, and doing so does not reveal some dour streak in your heart or soul or senses. It’s fucking fun!

I feel like Wilson could is straight-up joyriding through her thoughts in that piece. She’s an opposing player hanging from Team Nolan’s rim. She is demonstrating how deeply ludic critical watching and thinking is, or at least can be. Hasn’t a bad film ever pumped your brain like a Super Soaker?

Kathy Cacace @kathycacace.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
I’ve been thinking about the response to Emily Wilson’s review of Nolan’s Odyssey for days, and I think what’s bugging me is the idea that criticizing a film represents an inability to enjoy it—that it’s a kind of watching that is opposed to pleasure. And I don’t buy that for a second!

100% agree, and also, was struck by how Odysseus’s speech to Penelope about the Trojan Horse ending civilization was reminiscent of Oppenheimer. Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds. I think this is just a Nolan Guy, onto which he grafted a Greek epic.

I also think that the fan behavior that I’m talking about is different than the typical miserable Met crank, booing our own pitcher. These guys are predominantly white young men chanting USA and doing the Yankees roll call bit and the Atlanta “chop.” It’s not about the Mets, it’s about masculinity.

I HATE these guys, and there’s a bunch of them at every game I’ve been to this season. Tonight they worked the racist Atlanta chant and hand gesture into their repertoire! In fucking Queens! Just for fun! They are gaaaaaaarbage.

I have such fond feelings for Mendoza rooted in the magic back half of the 2024 season, and for that I will always be thankful. I don’t think making him our designated sin-eater for the season is going to turn it around, but I guess something’s gotta give?
