Excellent article, worth reading in full, but I particularly loved: "The urge to moderate is unfalsifiable and insatiable. If it doesn’t work, you’re told to moderate more."

Voters: "Tax the rich!" Elected Democrats, for some reason: "We totally hear you. Here's my proposal to not-tax the not-rich."

The State of the Union is in less than 2 weeks. The president will claim he’s lowered costs—but many of his policies have done the opposite. As we approach #SOTU, we’ll be comparing this administration’s rhetoric against the reforms our economy actually needs for citizens to have a #GoodLife. 🧵

If the right dominates the infosphere, if they can demonize any marginalized population they turn their eye on, then strategizing around *a current snapshot of public opinion* is almost definitionally misguided. They can change that opinion. Dems can't seem to, or won't try. All else is noise.

Yes! Rather than chasing Trump's policies, they should chase his strategy of shaping public perception.

The public values authenticity in public figures above almost everything else. The fact that Newsom was a standard center-left politician and is now shifting to the right will alienate him from both his old constituency and his new one. Have Democrats really not learned their lesson on this?

The big one for me here is the prohibition on selling authors' work for AI training without compensation. Since when has it been okay to take and make money off of other people's work without their permission? #NewsNotSlop

I want nothing on earth as much as I want a record-breaking, unequivocal, absolutely seismic win to prove to the Democrats that unambiguously championing trans people with your out-loud voice is as strategically effective as it is morally right

Why even go to college? Why write anything? Why read anything? Why learn anything? Why make art? At some point we're going to have to reckon with the basic idea of what makes life worthwhile and meaningful.

“Even big men don’t want to ride the subway” Can confirm, I was on the subway yesterday and it was just a bunch of women and small men. The big men couldn’t figure out how to work the tunstiles 😔

Note to editors and producers: If an executive order demands action that is illegal or outside of the president’s authority, then you should not describe it as ordering something. You should say it seeks to achieve some outcome and then note it is illegal or beyond the power of the president.

The hype about the ability for ChatGPT to produce Studio Ghibli style images belies the entire basis of the generative AI hype: it relies on wholesale plagiarism and copyright infringement to create content that is only deemed interesting by dint of sheer imitation. It is anti-art and anti-human.

Stoppp she sounds so cool and relatable in this interview that I worry I'm at risk of turning into the fangirl equivalent of the obnoxious Elon sycophants from a decade ago for her

I am once again asking everyone to read Octavia Butler. And if you think Parable of the Sower is prophetic, just wait until you get to the "make America great again" presidential candidate in Parable of the Talents.

I would like to speak up today for the trans community. You see, I know a bit of what it’s like to be politically scapegoated. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, suddenly anyone in America who had any amount of Japanese ancestry became suspect. Politicians preyed upon ignorance and fear. /1

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism. We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive
