Yes, this is a big part of the disinterest in genAI. Oh, you made a theft machine that generates poor quality nonsense? That impractical legal and technical nightmare? And no one can answer the obvious questions about it? Of course you did! The goal wasn't to create something valuable. It was Money.

Creative work has almost nothing to do with talent. Anyone can learn actual fundamentals and engagement on some level, if they want to. No one can become a valuable Ideas Person if they don't understand the work, because good and useful ideas have to account for the process of making/distributing.

Contemporary grifters want unearned status/wealth. That's it. They aren't creative geniuses who don't do the work or people with Ideas but no Talent. They have no actual interest in creative projects. That's why they don't understand the work, try to learn how to do it, or respect the people who do.

Design and animation are not an exercise in Vibes. This work is a combination of science, communication, technology, strategy—Visual appeal and impact is not a mystery, especially in the context of cultures, industries, and specific platform placements. Let the experts do their part.

God, coming up on 35 and 6+yr of working from home I can't say enough about Soft Pants. We're done, boss. Comfort is key, in whatever form. I simply Cannot anymore, and we deserve peace.

I own 'em, but I still haven't figured out how to wear them. I'm trying to figure out which of my sweaters are the right length. I dunno what I'm doing. My body is bigger than it has ever been. I'm just avoiding Hard Pants. This is confusing...but the slip shorts are cute.

Most of us understand the power of film. We know the feeling of the bass in the music when we're in a theater. We've cried in the middle of a powerful scene (even watching on a phone). Video games are that but INTERACTIVE. Video games engage us in the action. It's WILD.

Kate Trish @katetrish.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
The immersive quality of video games is incredible! It's not about placing someone in a space, like in VR. It's the combination of visuals, audio, controls, narrative stakes—People FEEL games in a way you can't understand until you play RE: 4, hear chainsaws, and throw your controller (just me?).

Over 10yr ago, I presented to fine arts students. The topic was "What Is Art" and I used video games a topic for examining our understanding. One example I used was Heavy Rain, exploring our emotional experience and the interactivity of it, in terms of actual controls and choice-based narratives.

This is me making a post about the topic of a seminar presentation I gave over 10 years ago. Video games are interactive storytelling. We have an incredible capacity to engage people via that medium—now more than ever. It's goofy to pretend video games aren't a fascinating, complex, valuable medium.

Kate Trish @katetrish.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Video games are (in many cases, at least) interactive storytelling. That is art. That is valuable.

In this type of situation, others are compensated. Their pay doesn't depend on the outcome of a single project, because of salaries/base pay. I have the expectation of completing a project I agreed to, only to find out I won't be paid for the full project and have lost control of the end product.
010
Kate Trish @katetrish.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Mind you, I'm referring to a job being completed and shipped without paying me to finish my part or allowing me to ensure the final product represents my quality of work. I'm referring to a huge win for everyone else, due in part to my support, and me getting stiffed.

Kate Trish @katetrish.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
There's Angry and then there's finding out that you're likely being cut out of a major project prematurely because your client's Top Hollywood Studio Client doesn't wanna pay to finish the job...+ no one was gonna tell you, even though you went above & beyond to help the team win that opportunity.

I didn't want to make it weird, Stacy. I would have politely declined if you said your abusive, loser boyfriend was attending upfront. Now I have to suffer that fool or be the one to say "I'm out" the moment I find out he was secretly invited. Rude. CRIME.
020
Kate Trish @katetrish.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Open Invite parties are 1 thing, but dinner reservations? The Small Thing at home that you said was just for our close friends? Don't tell me on the way that you invited 12 acquaintances of yours. Please. Don't tell me the day before that you invited someone insufferable to a 5-person Thing.
110
Kate Trish @katetrish.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
I stand by it: Surprise!Inviting people to plans with friends/family is Jail Time, for me. I agreed based on the original plan. I don't want to Suffer or be the person who has to cancel last minute, when I find out you secretly invited someone I can't stand or who completely changes the dynamic.

Low down payments? For first-time homebuyers in a competitive market, with high prices/rates? Funny. A bunch of us need to fork over well over $100k just to close on a starter home, then expect major repairs with our giant mortgage payments (+ good luck getting a place without waiving inspections).

Back at you, bud! Might not be able to visit before the end of the year because the house hunt is starting, but BY GOURD IT WILL HAPPEN BEFORE LONG. I'll yell when I'm gonna be in LA. <3 Once I have the dang house, visits should be frequent.

A big 🖕 to all the "friends" I've had who hated to see me win. Cannot relate. I got a voice note from my bestie about some of her good news today, and I declared "I FEEL LIKE IT'S *$@&ING CHRISTMAS". Multiply your joy exponentially by feeling happy for your friends.

Luring my fav sapphic and GNC bebes to New England by spamming them with leaf peepin' bait and gay little seaside towns. I'm just a longtime guest in their ritual circle, but I do think they'd prefer to Craft and Garden here vs. LA, and I need blessings & spells for my first home (coming soon).

Sure, you might have some luck, but you aren't successful because you're lucky. You're successful because you made sure you were ready for your opportunity. You made the most of it, when it arrived. You worked for and with and through it.

Back in the day, when academia was trying to squash my creativity, I worked on some really cool illustration concepts. There were so many narrative sketches like new mythologies about creativity, inner worlds, sisterhood, etc. I love my more symbolic/abstract work, but I do miss that. 💜

The actual Math on raising your rate as a self-employed creative? I can work 24hr less this month + match my highest grossing month in '25. When I decided to be bold + slightly increase the base rate I chose for '26 at the last second? The difference is $650 so far this month. Raise your rate.

Sometimes I get frustrated with Logistics and Timeline and Everything. Then I remember I'm successfully self-employed, buying myself a house is within reach, I've done things other people can only dream of, and I've won every battle so far. It's all relative. Gotta zoom out once in a while.

I find myself consciously trying to NOT be the busybody sometimes, but like...We can be Engaged Enough and also help a little, and I think that's great. I've also historically been cornered in kitchens, to be absolutely ROASTED (for doing dishes and being Me), and everyone enjoys that. ;)

Well hell—it really does extend to some Other Common Actions, doesn't it? I remember walking a younger coworker to her car on Melrose once, and she was like "You are also a woman walking to her car???" Joke's on her. I'M the scary one on the street, but also HA. 😂 Guess we GOTTA stick together.

I wanna be friends with all of the charismatic bad bitches who end up cleaning dishes at house parties/dinners—not because they're Socially Drained but because they hate the idea of the host having to deal with that shit later (We can yap AND wash dishes, okay?).

How do you say "I'm a self-employed contractor, you haven't booked my time, you have no deadline, and I'm busy with urgent work for your team and others, so if you keep pinging me within an hour of sending a request with NO explanation of WHY I will cry and otherwise be upset with you" in Corporate?

The pattern is alarming. I actually have to expect these projects to be That Bad at this point, because the likelihood is so high. Even with trusted people. Even with a reasonable contract. I don't know that there's anything more I can reasonably do to make this type of work Okay, moving forward.

Kate Trish @katetrish.bsky.social · 08/08/2026
I'm pretty sure I'm never taking an indie project with a micro budget again, and that's really upsetting me. I want to be able to support those projects, but I can't do it if the clients are going to be so severely disrespectful and go so far out of scope that they ought to multiply the budget 10x.

This approach is a terrible symptom of treating The Idea like it's separate from The Execution, while devaluing the work as a whole. Context, strategy, subject matter knowledge, craft—these are not unimportant. They're not just dressing.

Kate Trish @katetrish.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
A service I won't offer: You Try to Design It, I Fix It. Want to do it yourself? Go for it! If you want a graphics expert to make the graphics, let them handle it—not AI, not your editor, not the random fella who had an idea, etc. Treating experts like button-pushers doesn't really work for anyone.

Too many pros in #creativeadvertising hide incompetence behind the Idea or Creative Vision. They aren't makers, but they'll insist on prioritizing Creative Integrity over strategy, operations, etc...while ignoring what the makers need from them. It's a Downplay What You Don't Understand tactic.

Welp. I was going to apply for a Principal Art Director role (because I occasionally still explore staff roles and why not), but the pay is very low, and they require each applicant's residential address just to apply. Weird behavior. No, thanks!

I will never even TRY to have one distinct style. I’m not living my creative life in a box just to be understood by someone else’s Target Audience or Ideal Market. I’m for the ever-evolving weirdos. The chaos is the point.

To be fair: That often happens because someone ordered a finishing team to alter the gfx carefully designed by and approved with the creative agency team that made the ad. Don't do that either! 😆 We try so hard! It's expensive! Seeing our work wrecked when it finally appears in the world is awful.

Each platform provides guidance about their safe zones, with info about different placements/use cases. We're not just designing for Jessica's specific iPhone model, based on how the ad looks on HER screen. This is how the very expensive film trailer ends up with the text cropped out on TikTok.

Caught a fella posting on LinkedIn about how experience is overrated. That's true sometimes, but I worked with him. No one knew what his job was. He had a senior title + approx. no knowledge of the work (BIG problems). We don't need to brag about not knowing the basics after years in the game.

Aaaas always, I'm gonna recommend respecting the experts and bringing your goals/needs/concerns to the table instead of dictating solutions or otherwise overstepping (when it can be avoided). That's always a great way to arrive at the best solution and keep the team happy/productive.

I do typically assume this is an ego/insecurity issue. That can be More with anyone who has money invested. I try to be empathetic and fair. Other people will not be so understanding, and they shouldn't have to be. One person's insecurity doesn't justify insulting and inconveniencing other people.

A tip: If a highly qualified, experienced professional agrees to take your low budget project for an extremely reduced rate and gives extra support...doooon't insult them. The boldness with which folks who don't understand design/animation will criticize an expert never ceases to amaze me.
