now see while a grilled cheese and a melt aren't strictly the same thing i do feel the need to distinguish "adding cheese to your tuna sandwich" from "adding tuna to your grilled cheese" a good melt is 99% grilled cheese and 1% whatever else it is

100% they're misremembering something they've heard about ravens being way bigger than people think. but like, blackbirds are WAY smaller and not even a similar shape

DYLAN: "Zoe. I'm at the field hospital. It's... not looking good." ZOE: "Shit. Is there anyone alive?" DYLAN: "There's someone here, at the front desk." ZOE: "And the staff?" DYLAN: "One doctor. He's okay. Just distressed." ZOE: "And the civilians?" DYLAN: "Only one. A woman on a bed. She's crying."

i know i already mentioned this but "ai guys surprised the pope is religious" has gotta be an unprecedented degree of gormlessness

had a dream i went to see a doctor who didn't know the word insomnia and thought i was saying lasagna. marked me down as having a crippling lasagna addiction that made it difficult to participate in society

obviously you don't gotta hand it to the pope but it is very funny seeing catholic ai boosters who are seemingly surprised that the pope believes humans have god-given souls

was playing warframe as a character with a wolf theme and an ability where she can run on all fours really fast, and i was just standing there in dog mode at the end of a stage and another player knelt down next to me and typed "woof"

There's a lot of people who's answer seems to be "they should get to quietly move on with their life but they musn't ever be the least bit famous" but that strikes me as inadequate

outside of a couple blocks downtown there's nowhere near enough 1-1 detail to pick out a specific building or even street but i was able to be like "okay, there's the 404. there's the 401. look for a big park a bit northeast and bingo, there's me exploded"

having played enough of ace combat 8 to get to theve (toronto) i can now confirm the broad strokes remain recognizable far enough north for me to crash a mig29 into the neighbourhood i grew up in

When witches are cackling and telling you “Fire burn and cauldron bubble,” take a step back. Breathe. Those are normal things for fire and cauldrons to do. They’re trying to mess with you.

i don't think anyone on the anti-car side is saying "fuck those people." quite the opposite in fact. i have a fucked up hip AND i don't drive. for me more density = shorter walk. more public transit = shorter walk. more lanes and parking lots = longer shittier walk

Kat A. Beckett @katerinabucket.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
like you look at maps showing how people in different places typically commute and there's all these little islands of like "12% use public transit, which is 11% more than most places" and then new york is the only one where it's actually above 30%

Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, SF, and Seattle are all, like, plainly well above average for north america, but NYC is literally the only city in the US that's actually anywhere near the level of what most of the world considers normal

remedy love to end games like "and then the protagonist got in the omelas torture hole in order to keep space satan at bay" and then make a sequel like "after 12 years space satan broke containment"

you ever think about that time an economist ran the numbers on how likely an nfl team is to benefit from going for it on 4th down in various circumstances and concluded that every football coach in history is a massive coward

and the man who gave me that advice? albert einstein (no but really the advice came from a cis guy which feels unexpected enough to turn into a punchline but i can't think of a way to do that)

ultimately i found it was MUCH easier to imagine myself surrounded by friends and loved ones, to imagine myself married, to imagine myself with a life i was happy with, if i imagined myself a woman. and so it was decided. i still then had to go out and make that life

the best piece of advice i got when i was thinking about transitioning was to think 5 or 10 years ahead, to the life i'd like to be living, the woman or man i'd like to be, and to consider various such hypothetical futures

Why are so many of them talking like they're a franchisee with an actual business relationship with the pokemon company? like the actual store is a wholesaler people go to to buy inventory

I think a lot of cis people think trans people in the US are facing a rollback of rights that were won in the 80s or 90s or 2010s or something but no. they're losing for the first time rights they've simply never not had

Much lower stakes but sometimes you'll see like, an AI generated menu description or apartment listing where like. it is describing *a* quesadilla or *an* apartment but clearly not *this* one

Every AI output is necessarily both hypothetical and pretty general. Unreliable at all times but especially bad for information that is both highly bespoke and the least bit niche

I feel like you could show this to one billion non americans and maybe 2 of them would see it without prompting. like it's easy enough to see once it's pointed out but even then only in like, a corner-of-your-eye optical illusion sort of way

one thing the "rationalists" fail to consider is that taking over the world requires a lot of resources and a certain amount of buy in. at a certain point it would have to involve going to investor meetings and saying "please fund my evil scheme to take over the world or i'll torture you forever"
000
Kat A. Beckett @katerinabucket.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
the actual thought experiment boils down to "what if one day an evil organization take over the world and punish everyone who didn't help them. i better help them in advance" and like, for it to "count" the organization can't even be subtle about it either

Kat A. Beckett @katerinabucket.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
there's an imagined (yet necessarily explicit) "join us or die" threat to it. the game theory itself doesn't actually require an AI? it could just as easily be a policy, political party, group of spiteful ninjas, whatever. it's even dumber than pascal's wager

Kat A. Beckett @katerinabucket.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
The thing about roko's basilisk is that it isn't just a "what if the AI just does that" thing, it's like, a game theory thing in which there's an imperative to intentionally create roko's basilisk before someone else does

Exchange rates are a product of international soft power as much as they are a product of domestic currency value. Historically the over-valueing of the dollar has allowed americans to enjoy dirt cheap imports, but wreaks havoc on domestic industry

like aside from the obvious absurdity of saying "please praise the fact that i'm fucking you over" to someone, why do they care? why do they need us to like them? i don't expect transphobes to like me! wouldn't want em to!

So much of modern conservatism and centrism is begging for the approval of the people you're shitting on and then getting resentful and vindictive when that approval isn't forthcoming it's really weird

Now, I am of the opinion that the "defence" still amounts to soft holocaust denial. But I am *definitely* of the opinion that referring to the single most famous nazi book burning as a made-up delusion is something only a nazi would do
010
Kat A. Beckett @katerinabucket.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
The usual defence when JKR is accused of holocaust denial is to insist that the Oppenplatz book burning had nothing to do with transsexuals and was entirely because Magnus Hirschfeld was Jewish. The problem with this defence is that JKR claimed the Oppenplatz book burning didn't happen

"a few specific things have to break bad, it's not likely, but it COULD plausibly happen, that's like 10% right?" when actually the chain of events they're imagining is one-in-several-million
000
Kat A. Beckett @katerinabucket.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I think at least some of the AI dorks "raising the alarm" have mapped out actual specific Bad Time scenarios in their heads but when they say shit like "the odds of this happening are around 10%" what's going on is the same thing as americans thinking every single demographic is 25% of the country

Any problems would be about trademark rather than copyright which mostly boils down to the question of "could anyone reasonably see this and think it's endorsed by marvel"
