When they entered the room, the emergency lights spilled through the openings, lining the walls with jagged contours of claws, hunched figures, and twisted limbs. Hale couldn’t tell if they were beasts, or tricks of a brain drowning in cortisol and adrenaline, his amygdala hijacking perception into a survivalist’s nightmare.
The facility groaned—metal shifting, doors rattling, the unseen pressing against the structure like the whole place was breathing.
An event was unfolding on the edge of Hale’s peripherals.

There I was at my desk, practicing my doodle hearts, when John walked through my door. Only, back then, he was still just “the Sandman” to me. Sure, maybe once or twice I had tested out, “Ay-o! Sandy!” but (other than me) we don’t really do nicknames in the astral building. That doesn’t mean I was any less fond of him; I just called him by his title, as custom goes. I say “other than me,” because I do name my cherubs. By the time I had more than three of them, “Hey you,” just started to feel rude. But I digress.
“Mr. Sandman,” I greeted him with a grin. “Workin’ hard or hardly workin’?”
“Hello, Cupid,” he said, giving me a friendly smile. “How are you?”
I put my pen down and clasped my hands, leaning forward. “Oh, you know me. I’m live-laugh-loving it!” As to be expected, the Sandman was not 100% sure what I meant, but he looked pleased all the same.
