The thing on the window sill is a shallow-water calcarous sponge called a stromatoporoid, which grew on top of an algal mat on the ancient sea floor. Various invertebrate shells are found in the lighter-colored algal mat (including a gastropod shell and various bivalve shells and shell fragments).
