Testing storm muffs. I am skeptical, but it’s fun having a seal in the house.
My dog, Audrey, a black Labrador cross with grey around her muzzle and a red collar, stares off into the distance, a bit bewildered, with a grey fabric band wrapped around her head. There is thick padding over the ears that is supposed to muffle storm sounds.

This is the most ancient of memes, back from when we used a template reminiscent of those old motivational posters. There is a picture of a tabby cat with a Game Boy photoshopped into its paws. Its mouth and eyes are wide with excitement. Another cat, a black and white one, peers at the screen. Text at the top reads: "LET ME SHOW YOU MY POKEMANS". The image is surrounded by a black border, and at the bottom "MY POKEMANS" is written again in big white caps. Smaller text under that reads: "Let me show you them."

Thems were the days.

"Our serpents, let us show you them!"
'Orestes Pursued by the Furies' by John Singer Sargent, 1921.

An oil painting of a scene from Greek mythology depicting The Furies, a tangled group of angry ladies in sheer robes with flaming hair, holding equally flaming torches. In their other hand they each have a fistful of snakes ready to strike. They aggressively thrust the snakes towards Orestes, as he runs from them, his head down, naked, attempting to protect his head with his arms.

Description from: https://most-famous-paintings.com/en/art/info/john-singer-sargent-orestes-pursued-by-the-furies-8BWT2H-en/

"The scene unfolds with a dramatic intensity. A group of figures – including Orestes himself, rendered with a raw vulnerability – are caught in the throes of pursuit. The red background isn’t merely a backdrop; it pulsates with an almost violent energy, amplifying the sense of urgency and reflecting the fiery wrath of the Furies. Sargent's realism is particularly evident in his attention to detail: the strained expressions on the faces, the subtle gestures of fear and desperation, the textures of clothing and skin. He doesn’t shy away from portraying the physical toll of this relentless chase. “Orestes Pursued by the Furies” draws upon a rich vein of Greek mythology. Orestes, son of Agamemnon, is haunted by the ghosts of his murdered father and grandfather, relentlessly pursued by the Furies – goddesses of vengeance who embody retribution for crimes against family. This narrative speaks to universal themes of guilt, justice, and the consequences of violence."

Muscle memory is wild, I was watching the new Pulp film on Mubi and suddenly a switch flipped in my sad, dead brain that made me jump up and perform this very complicated dance sequence with 100% accuracy after 30 years. My arms are a bit sore now, though. Poor Gran.

THE SIN, Julio Romero de Torres, 1914.
Description from The Julio Romero de Torres Museum:

"The scene unravels with a green sunset with the Almodóvar Castle in the background; in the foreground, the Chruch of Saint Hipólito in Córdoba and the beauty of the nude woman, lying down in a similar way to the Velázquez Venus, back-turned indifferent to the scene that is taking place before her. Four old gossiping women dressed for mourning argue about the convenience and occasion of the sin. The honor of this woman is the object of an animated conversation among them."

One of the old women has a sterner face than the other three, who seem to be delighting in the gossip, all facing her as though all talking at the same time. She, on the other hand, stares straight at the viewer as though judging them, too. She holds up a round mirror in front of the young reclining woman, in which a reflection of her indifferent, almost amused face can be seen. She doesn't give a fuck.

Ocean Photographer of the Year Winner Julian Anton’s photo of a male seahorse and two new-borns.
Black and white photo by Julian Anton of “An adult seahorse pictured with newly born juveniles in the shallow seaweed-filled waters of Moorea, French Polynesia. Although they are unlikely to be related, their arrangement creates the impression of a farewell, as if the tiny seahorses are gathering around a father after he has released them into the world. Seahorses are now rare in French Polynesia so this image was the result of long hours of searching among the seaweed.”

The paintings of Amedeo Modigliani prophesied the 21st century culture wars with alarming accuracy. For example, here's Graham Linehan.
This is a painting by Amedeo Modigliani from 1916, not of comedy writer and raging transphobe Graham Linehan, but of a man called 'Monsieur Deleu'. The figure possesses the artist's signature elongated form. M. Deleu is seated with his head tilted to one side, one eyebrow raised, his small lips pursed. He's judging you. He knows more than you. He is wearing a bright orange jacket and a fruity little white necktie, which would be delightful, were it not for the Hitler hair.

Simultaneous loathing and appreciation for how well Pierre Clémenti pulled off my standard 2am breakdown haircut, especially considering whoever did it was most certainly on a buttload of drugs.
Pierre Clémenti in PORCILE (PIGSTY) (1969) dir. Pier Paolo Pasolini. The haircut in question is a curly, dark bob that falls just below his ears, with a blunt, short fringe, only about an inch long, otherwise known as “baby bangs” — a look alt-leaning girls have been trying to pull off since around 1900. Unfortunately, not many of us are a hot Italian man with dark eyes, full lips and sharp cheekbones. He even suits a conquistador helmet and the act of consuming human flesh. That being said, if you want this haircut, do it anyway, no matter what you look like. Life’s too short, Tim Curry is dead and some people have wars in their countries, Kim.

How good are swallows? They just get it. And they'll get you too, if you don't watch yourself.
A blue swallow sitting on a thin branch. It has a rotund little body with white feathers from its undercarriage right up to the lower half of the beak, then blue feathers up over the head and down over its back and wings. Like all swallows, it looks furious due to heavily-lidded, downturned eyes. This one has its equally grumpy beak slightly open; glaring straight at the camera like it is in the middle of giving the photographer a piece of its mind. A barn swallow looking even more ropable than the blue one. It too is standing on a branch, head turned sharply towards the camera like you've just said something out of order and it's like: "Are you talkin' to me? Don't you look at me! It's 'Daddy', you shithead, where's my bourbon?" It has the usual barn swallow markings: blue over the wings and top half of the head, a red stripe between the eyes then below the beak a red to yellow gradient. Three baby barn sparrows sitting in a line, huddled together. They have the usual blue, red and yellow markings, but the colours are muted, as chicks are born with brown feathers that become more vibrant over time. I'm sensing some sibling rivalry. The one on the left is looking off to its right, sulking. The one in the middle is glaring down the camera lense, clearly sick of this shit, and the third has its head raised high and turned in the opposite direction to the one on the left. Proud. Indignant. These guys are real jerks. I feel as though I birthed them myself. Dear me, what on Earth is this commotion? Two blue sparrows sitting on a tree stump. The one on the left is perched right on the edge, backing away, fearful of the other, who stands smack in the middle, screaming in its face. Gosh.

Why don’t incels hairmax anymore?
John Hurt and David Warner in LITTLE MALCOLM AND HIS STRUGGLE AGAINST THE EUNUCHS (1974), a film in which they play fascist MRA dorks. John looks like he’s cosplaying as George Harrison at the rooftop show: shoulder-length hair, handlebar moustache, big black coat—which is funny considering George produced this movie. Warner has the same hairstyle only a little lighter in colour. He’s wearing a tan coat over a grey turtleneck jumper and he is wearing brown tortoiseshell spectacles.

Max von Sydow in THE NIGHT VISITOR looking very pale with red-rimmed eyes. In fact, everything about him is pale including his hair and his T-shirt and the wall he’s peering out from behind. And yes, I know he’s supposed to look sick in this film and he’s often supposed to look sick in a lot of other things too, but he also just looked sick all the time okay? Still from AUDITION (1999). The camera is positioned behind Asami (Eihi Shiina) who is sitting on the floor in her run-down apartment. Quote with a ridiculous movie you think people should watch.
Poster for ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE (1970). The top half features a still from the film of two people aged around 50-60 (a man and a woman played by Harry Andrews and Beryl Reid) standing on either side of a younger man (Peter McEnerny) in a chauffeurs uniform. They are both kissing him on the cheek. The younger man has a resigned look on his face and is holding a bouquet of pink flowers. The bottom half of the poster is bright yellow and mostly filled with text but for an image on the right hand side of a busty blonde lady in a black bikini who, if I remember correctly, only appears in one scene. They probably slapped her on the poster to appeal to straight men, because everything else about this movie is gay as fuck. Plus it’s got Beryl Reid in it and anyone that doesn’t like Beryl Reid is ultimately soulless and untrustworthy.

Mia Goth as Gabi in INFINITY POOL, pointing a gun at someone, mouth mid-scream, eyes wide. She has long blonde hair and is wearing a black evening dress with pearls over the shoulders.Ko Shibasaki as Mitsuko in BATTLE ROYALE. It’s her ID headshot, taken before the battle begins. She’s looking slightly down and up at the camera with a smirk on her face. She has long straight black hair tied half up, with a few lose strands hanging over her face.Assad Zaman as Armand in THE VAMPIRE LESTAT. He’s talking to somone on his left, one hand under his chin; a sinister, perhaps threatening, look on his face. He is wearing a dark grey shirt rolled up to the elbows and his black, curly, shoulder-length hair is half tied up. Graham Greene as Arthur in CLEARCUT. He’s standing by a large lake; mist rising from the surface of the water. He has a rifle slung over his shoulder; looking into the distance, his face stern, with purpose. He has long, strait black hair with greying roots and is wearing a grey tshirt and a necklace with some sort of charm on a leather cord.

Screenshot from episode 4 of THE VAMPIRE LESTAT showing Daniel (Eric Bogosian) a man in his 70s with curly grey hair wearing tinted glasses and a maroon shirt, sitting in front of a jackalope—a taxidermied rabbit with antlers attached to it’s head. Close up of the jackalope. It’s either judging the viewer, or knows something we don’t. Perhaps both?

#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched #filmsky Quite possibly the oddest lineup yet. It’s been an erratic week. No writing, but still researching. Me back’s been playin’ up.
My last for watched on Letterboxd: PROJECT HAIL MARY (2026) dirs. Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, 3 stars; THE UNKNOWN GIRL (2016) dirs. Jeanne-Pierre & Luc Dardenne, 4 stars; CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT (1965) dir. Orson Welles, 3.5 stars and KEVIN TURVEY: THE MAN BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR (1982) dir. Colin Gilbert, 3 stars, all for the bit with Roger Sloman kicking the shit out of Rik Mayall.

Pic for reference. All that aside, I don’t really want to see everyone from NOSFERATU again, at least not so soon. For me, it might break the immersion a bit. And maybe just…I dunno, give other actors a chance?
Lily-Rose Depp on the set of WERWULF. She is wearing a costume that looks characteristic of a peasant from the 1300s; a long dress under a big brown dirty coat, a thin belt around her waist, a white cowl around her face with something similar to a nun habit over that. It’s a darker brown than her coat; kinda on the maroon side. It’s clear that they have made her body much larger than it is naturally. They’ve also given her a cleft palate, a congenital disability.

I didn’t say it in the main post because it’s a bit petty and I’m kind of bored of the discourse, but I’d like to see less “nepo babies”. She was great in NOSFERATU, but I don’t want her turning up in every future Eggers project the way her asshole father did in Tim Burton movies. BORING.
