When I am over some only half-done job, I’ve always liked muttering “I am in blood stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as to go over”. Good incentive to just finish the bloody thing :)

Noting that in many ways this is just a very deep British adherence to the social status quo. Go back to the 1850s & the apparently revolution-ready British proletariat were shaping to disappoint Karl Marx with their unwillingness to challenge the despotism of capital and the slavery of labour.

Back when I was a household with two female grey cats, one built sleek and one cobby, I lost count of the number of tradies and other random visitors who assumed they were bro and sis because similar colouring but chunkus vs aero shapes, despite very different fur and faces. Gender projection ahoy!

So sometimes yes, people are maybe getting frustrated and not taking one step to fix it because it was genuinely not clear to me why a thread was locked so I can’t reply because I’d been looking at one post in it and didn’t think to pan up to the top. And now I know!

This actually explained a problem I’d hit, where I’d wanted to add to something someone had said in a discussion but couldn’t because the top post locked to that person’s followers only and that affected everyone in the thread (including the person who I do follow).

As an avid AI avoider, I probably select for the same biases, but this article includes links to a Lancet piece and a couple of pre-prints which seem to be trying to take look at the impacts from a more neutral starting point: www.abc.net.au/news/2026-05...

Thank you for the review, which is how I found out there was a new novella to read! (Even if this is a review for the already committed, some of is still needed the prompt)

Hi, sending a request to please consider having a second payment option that’s not paypal. I just tried to order the Gorey print and they won’t allow a billing address to be a PO box, which is a problem b/c that is what my billing address is, and most other payment providers accept this possibility

Analogy just needs a tweak. My daily driver pen is a 2-colour cartridge pen with the form factor of the pen on the left which lets me pick and edit 2 inks in one pen. It’s boosted, not a giant overloaded mess, and I’m guessing most people want that small options upgrade and not a unwieldy 20 stack

Another cheer here for finding out there’s a new Penric and Desdemona available!

None of my female cats did this, but now I’ve got a (neutered) boy who has done it since he was a juvenile - but only with two specific stuffed toys. He starts in another room and goes on till he can find me and drop his trophy at my feet in glory (including detours to the catio - sorry neighbours)

I hate to have to tell you, but most of my social circle does exactly that via whogivesacrap.org (turned out to be v handy in covid shortage times). I believe they are now also in the US, UK and Europe so this isn’t just an Aussie oddity.

ok, I am going to read up a little then try this next bake. Feels like it has the potential to be game-changing (just a leap of faith when all past advice has been about getting everything as hot as possible first)

I am very intrigued by the idea of cold-ovening, but this is the first time I’ve encountered the concept. Do you rely on any specific key points (adjust max temp/ lid vs lidless time etc)?

And NGO staff, social workers, every flavour of creative etc etc. That persistent inverse relationship between how vocational a skilled job is and how well it is compensated (and if that field also invites casualisation, have a side dish of minimum waged structurally devalued service work too)

They do a screening set of questions first to make sure you have no factors that need the trad one which is aimed at the cervix, then if qualified you get to swab yourself with less precision but much more comfort. Great for people with tricky placement!

For those of us with well-thumbed copies of the original versions, would you consider the changes noticeable enough to warrant also getting the new version?

I appreciate that replies are focused on dunking on the message, but this font is also giving truely terrible kerning effect for ‘her’ and ‘hera’ (so on both shirts). It’s badly done in every dimension.

Not meaning to dispute what you do, but for this specific post, claiming to read six papers (not key news or summaries) at 5:15 in 45mins as part of a daily routine that includes health-damaging levels of sleep deprivation, it’s a nonsense claim adding to the bullshit side of already weighed scales.

Katear is listening @katear.bsky.social · 25/10/2023
It’s not completely impossible, but the logistics make it very improbable. (I have worked this job in the past so know how many people you need to cover that many major papers in 4 hours, which would let it be done by 5am, + double staff #s to run 7 days. Yeah, nah.

News is 24/7, but the claim is that he reads half a dozen specific papers and those go to print and then get distributed in a way that would make it logistically very hard to get summarised in the way you’re referring by 5:15.

Katear is listening @katear.bsky.social · 24/10/2023
Not for reading at 5.15 he doesn’t, unless the summaries are for yesterday’s papers

I should caution that RM’s are * *very* not cheap to buy (though arguably the cost-per-year/wear makes it worth it) and also may be hard to source outside Australia.

Some boots are also designed sustainably - eg RM Williams boots can get heels, soles and elastic replaced so as long as the leather is maintained, they can last for decades (on my second pair in over 30yrs, only because I walked the first into nails that ripped up the leather past rescue)

This post prompted me to check which version they’re bringing to Oz & it’s the left one, so I’ve pre-ordered a US copy - despite postage - because I must have the impressively impassive puss portrait edition (& of course I start with wanting to read the book, but want it in the adorable wrapper pls)

Pill-acceptance is very cat-dependant. I had one cat (with chronic health issues) who was so easy to pill it was unreal - tip her head and she opened up to let me drop the tablet in. But she was demonic to the vet so they’d assume hard-to-handle & default to next option when pills were the easy bit

My vet still requires people to mask for all appointments; they’re the only place I go where this is still the default. At least I know my cats are being treated by people who understand first principles for health.
