It's not that I don't like to stick it to the man with an open source suite of tools but if one's method requires copying the completed work someone else paid people for, rather than getting a community to contribute the work, where does the next generation of that, or other software come from?

Interesting pedagogical perspective from 1975, less text in the text book, to encourage thinking: "Faced with a choice of reading about something versus thinking about it, people will choose reading. Reading drives out thinking."

A Note for Instructors. The problems in this book are designed to stimulate thought. For many of the problems, especially those in Chapters 2 and 3, there are no unique correct answers; rather, there are only thoughtful and nonthoughtful answers, or creative/noncreative answers. The amount of written material in the book has deliberately been kept terse to allow more time for thought. In effect, we postulate a Gresham's Law of Study: Faced with a choice of reading about something versus thinking about it, people will choose reading. Reading drives out thinking. Reading is a well-defined technology at which most of us are relatively competent; it provides easily recognized benchmarks of progress and completion, and it can be accomplished with certainty in some easily predicted time period.

Reducing the necessary reading time is only part of the solution, though. We also need to make thinking more attractive and rewarding. One way to do this is the formation of small problem-set groups. Each group meets outside of class to discuss the problems and ultimately turns

"The application of information technology to organisations demands a wider knowledge than many of its specialists now display." Ha! I hear that 1973 Robert Stamper
The explosive growth of information technology has not been accompanied by a commensurate improvement in the understanding of information. It is undoubtedly easier to manufacture and distribute electronic hardware than to refine our concepts of information and disseminate them to the hard-pressed men and women who are trying to put the new technology to work in government, industry and commerce. Too often the computer has either had a muffled impact or caused unexpected damage when introduced by technicians who do not understand how information functions in organisations. The application of information technology to organisations demands a wider knowledge than many of its specialists now display. It calls for an understanding of both machine and human information systems.

Society is a fabric woven from threads of communication. Organizations occupy a significant area of that fabric and increasingly they affect the texture and tensions of the life of every individual. The products of technologies have had a profound effect upon society, which has adapted its contours to accommodate them as though they were objects underneath and external to it. But information technology is different. It can be woven into the fabric itself and, by making possible new patterns of communication among people, it can allow us to create new kinds of society

I bought a countertop dishwasher last week, and while I hesitate to say this, given the "new item" effect hasn't had time to settle yet, but It's one of the best purchases I've made. It might actually work better for me than a full dishwasher (which this apt doesn't have)

If 10 Americans "meet by chance in the Sahara Desert and they will immediately call a meeting, form 'The Great Sahara Association,' elect officers, get themselves large badges, and hold annual reunions" and then their children will join "the sons and daughters of the same... lol (1933)
The real danger lurks in a clearly defined national weakness of an entirely different kind. This weakness may be termed the "Bloc mania." We are a nation of joiners. Let ten of our citizens meet by chance in the Sahara Desert and they will immediately call a meeting, form "The Great Sahara Association," elect officers, get themselves large badges, and hold annual reunions. And when the whole ten have passed on to their final reward "The Sons and Daughters of the Founders of the Great Sahara Association" will organize and carry on until the last progeny of the group is extinct.

Grew up with tv ads for Bryant and Stratton professional education, but didn't realize they were as old as this! 1870's for teaching the skills needed for clerical work
Age limits were very rarely mentioned. At the Bryant and Stratton Commercial School of Boston in 1875, pupils could begin the preparatory course if they were at least ten years old. Boston Commercial College, which offered no preparatory course, said that no formal entrance examination was necessary, and there was no limit as to age, but scholars less than thirteen years old were not desired. Upper age limits apparently did not exist, and in fact the same Boston Commercial College went on to say that "Scholars of mature years will almost always find persons of their own time of life attending. Every year we have among our students persons of both sexes, married and single, who have passed the early flush of youth, and are seeking special training for special ends. "

"We cannot see that we are so like other people that if they are prejudiced, probably also so are we. We repeat phrases and judgements uncritically. ... If we are to understand [the era's social] problems we have to tear such prejudices out by the roots and examine them objectively."
For most of us, the trouble is that we get caught up in a web of confused thinking. We mistake prejudices for clear thinking. While we may see the prejudices of others we remain quite unaware of our own. We cannot see that we are so like other people that if they are prejudiced, probably also so are we. We repeat phrases and judgments uncritically. We are assured that "Indians are not logical," and so you can do nothing with them. What do people know of the contributions of Indian scientists and mathematicians? Yellow men are naturally cunning, and, like the monkey, imitators: Jews have a natural attraction for money and business; the German is a first class, but unoriginal organiser; the Russian is original, but has no power of organisation; the British are natural colonisers We know it is a hotch potch of prejudice, at best an unconscious attempt to justify something else that is not mentioned-the lower status of the African, the subjection of the Indian, antipathy to the Soviet system, and so on. If we are to understand these problems we have to tear such prejudices out by the roots and examine them objectively.

Renaissance papermakers' watermarks!! My colleague and I spent a while debating what the symbols on this clock in the library lobby were, and this was not one we considered! But here in the 1949 special edition of the alumni magazine about the opening of the library, it's explained!
Short article featuring a photo of a clock with symbols at the 12, 3, 6 and 9:

The Clock

PATTERNED after five common water marks of the Renaissance, four sculptures on the cardinal points and a fifth on the hour hand of the clock in the main hall of the Firestone Library invite the attention of the scholar and casual visitor alike.
The names of most of the early paper-makers who first used the watermarks depicted remain unknown; but the same de-vices, with trifling variations, were used simultaneously by hundreds of different pa-per mills all over Europe. Each figure has a symbolic significance, interpreted in a study made by Harold Bayley.

The hand, at twelve o'clock, is the emblem of the axiom, "laborare est orare" to work is to pray." When marked with a heart, it takes on added significance as "loving labor." The unicorn, at three o'clock, symbolizes purity and strength. It was often represented during the Middle Ages in company with a virgin holding a dove. At six o'clock is the "Bright and Morning Star."

Stationed at nine o'clock is the hound representing the pursuit of knowledge. The greyhound, a breed of dog that figures most prominently in watermarks, is normally distinguished by the little bell around its neck signifying "acute preaching." By stretching the analogy, the belled hound becomes another symbol: an emblem of persistent and energetic education destined eventually to destroy the monster Ignorance.

The head of an ox that tips the hour hand appealed particularly to papermakers, since it was a badge of patience, a type "of all those who bore the yoke and labored in silence for the good of others."

The clock was designed by the architects with the aid of Austin Purves Jr., mural painter and sculptor, and was executed by Mr. Purves at his studio in Litchfield, Conn
