I think he actually has an argument (if what he says is factually accurate) that he worded very poorly. IF court permission was required for the deposition, and opposing counsel only requested permission for a limited dep, then I could see believing the court's order only allowed a limited dep.

The underlying dispute was that the petitioner tried to force another Jew to litigate in the beis din instead of courts. While that dispute was ongoing, he went back to the beis din seeking a declaration that the respondent was committing a sin by litigating in the secular courts.

The petitioner was a party to a case before the court, then went and commenced an action in the Beis Din, knowing the defendant wouldn't appear. The court is exercising jurisdiction not over the sin, but over the action of the party to the lawsuit in seeking to influence the proceeding.
