Are you ready for the Developer Keynote at #GoogleCloudNext?! Debi Cabrera and I are! It's a great show with really cool tech demos! Come learn about what's NEXT with us at 2:30pm!!
Two women, Kaslin Fields & Debi Cabrera, stand together smiling in front of the Keynote stage, with a Google Cloud logo on the screen behind them. Kaslin Fields has long straight brown with side bangs, and is wearing glasses, a purple shirt, and a dark blue jacket. Debi has long long curled dark hair and is wearing a light grey sweatshirt with unreadable words in an embroidery-style font.

I feel like I'm finally starting to get good at this. I planned for months to pack as efficiently as possible for my last trip to Japan (October, 2023) and was very proud of the result. I ended up with 9 shirts, a dress, a skirt, a pair of jeans, 2 kinds of shoes (I could have brought 1).
A collage of images of clothing items. Starting from the top left (left to right, top to bottom) A blue long sleeved shirt, a black t-shirt, a pair of skinny jeans, a yellow t-shirt, a dark green t-shirt, black wedge ankle boots, a black rain jacket with black-and-white striped interior, a red t-shirt, a red long-sleeved short casual dress, a mid-calf-length khaki skirt with pockets and an eastic waist, black shiny leather tennis shoes with white bottoms, a black jacket, a grey t-shirt with a pixelated gen 1 pikachu, a magenta 3/4 length sleeve shirt, a dark purple t-shirt, black leggings, and a brownish grey t-shirt. Some pictures feature a model wearing the clothes, some are just the clothes. All have white-ish backgrounds.

In "The Little Red Hen," a hen is baking bread and asks all of the other farm animals for help with each part of the process. No one helps, but then when the bread is done, everyone wants a piece. The point is that you need to earn what you get, but it's also a great point about prioritization.
The cover of the Little Red Hen "Little Golden Book." Below the title is an illustration of a red hen in a bonnet and appron carrying a fresh loaf of bread with steam coming off of it, with little chicks running around looking up at the bread.

Takeaways: prioritize Kubernetes Security over check boxes. If you implement strong Kubernetes security that takes into consideration the points in this presentation, you'll have a strong posture and be in a good place for compliance.

Kaslin Fields @kaslin.rocks · 15/11/2024
A dark secret: your Kubernetes Security will mirror your org chart. How well people get along, which areas are closer. These things will be reflected in your security posture.

Monitoring and logging architecture. 2 main types of logs: application, and system component & platform. When and how much do you log? What tools will you use to manage and correlate your logging?

Admission Policy Criteria. Trusted images, having an image approval process and criteria, how could admission policies break deploys, if some kind of security issue happens during runtime, who handles that?
100
Kaslin Fields @kaslin.rocks · 15/11/2024
Runtime security concerns. Container drift, seccomp and similar tools at the kernel level, security tool support, consistent enforcement of policies.

Kubernetes is the guardian. It's an important gate that can enforce your security rules across your workloads.

Kaslin Fields @kaslin.rocks · 15/11/2024
Consider the container supply chain and your software development lifecycle.
100
Kaslin Fields @kaslin.rocks · 15/11/2024
It's important to design your containers for your applications with security in mind too. The reminders in this slide are great. Unnecessary processes, running instances are not the same as container images, a container is just software.

There are so many tools to control segregation of resources in Kubernetes! Namespaces, container styles (visor, kata), the cluster boundary, and more!

In considering multi-tenancy, remember that the goal is to reduce risk to the whole system if one tenant is compromised.

Kaslin Fields @kaslin.rocks · 15/11/2024
RBAC in Kubernetes is important for identity and credentials, authn and auth. The trouble is that the security team doesn't wanna do it because they don't know Kubernetes. The platform team doesn't wanna do it because they don't know security that well.
140
Kaslin Fields @kaslin.rocks · 15/11/2024
Identity is the first thing that you really need to get right. If you mess it up at the start, you're gonna be in a bad place down the road. It's really hard to fix later.

The Cloud Native Security Model 4Cs are a great tool to help you understand your threat surface: code, container, cluster, and cloud. These levels each need security considerations.

"Name a barrier to Kubernetes adoption that has largely been overcome" starts with Team JSON, YAML misses the steal, and JSON takes the big win!
