More and more, I expect the value of these publishes will stray away from "we find and deliver you the best writing" to "we deliver you writing from people actually worth listening to". So less focus on the quality of the writing and more on who is writing it. Which I'm personally for. (to a point)

All in all it just seems really dooming for the current short story publishing business model. Anthologies especially.

Devin Stone @kasiski.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
The question is, I guess: can they afford to NOT trust. I.e. is there enough money in small press short story publishing to be able to spend enough time on editing to actually catch this stuff? My suspicion is no. That, or they'll have to dramatically limit the number of stories they accept.

Devin Stone @kasiski.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
From the blog post, it sounds to me like they weren't "giving it a pass" so much as they just didn't spend enough time/effort editing it. They sent over some suggestions, the author accepted them, and that was that. They trusted. Issue, is with AI out there, you can no longer afford to trust.

expands it from being purely adversarial to have a layer of cooperation as well. Almost like the GM-player relationship in a TTRPG.

compartmentalize and just focus on solving the individual puzzles as given without trying to prematurely "solve" the game as a whole. This is a good thing though, in the long run. Sure, it makes the designer's job harder, but it also deepens the player-designer relationship...

...started to develop a paranoia that makes me *look* for this trick, to try and suss out what mechanic the designer is obscuring before the level design actually requires it. When I go to an IRL magic show, I can willfully turn off this skepticism, but in a puzzle game it's tough to...

The more rules-discovery games I play, the more fraught the "designer intentionally obscures secret mechanic from the player" thing has become for me. On the one hand, I adore the joy it gives me when such a magic trick lands (as in Abdec, as I previously wrote about). On the other hand, I've...

Stealing this metaphor: "Using an AI chatbot for assistance is simply incompatible with the most important stuff I hope (or need) to get out of writing anything. Using an AI chatbot to help me write would be like using the kitchen garbage disposal to help me eat dinner."

My goal would be to make it something subtle that new players don't even notice.

Devin Stone @kasiski.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
Hadn't considered customs. In that case, I'd try to communicate "visited" rather than "warpable". Will confuse new players less and be just as useful to players who actually care. Maybe a desaturated vs saturated thing? Or static vs animated? Something that communicates "aliveness".

Devin Stone @kasiski.bsky.social · 16/02/2026
I got the "true" ending and never realized what that symbol meant (despite having many theories throughout lol). My hot take is that knowing which levels can be warped to isn't something the player needs to know at a glance. They can just press G and find out. I say cut the symbol entirely.

This begs the question: What makes a puzzle "underclued"? In sokobans and other more formal games, you can mathematically prove a puzzle is "fair", i.e. logically deducible, but in games that require lateral thinking, e.g. Blue Prince, "fairness" is a lot more subjective. How do you draw that line?

I appreciate how you handled things in Abdec. Hints and full solutions for the earlier puzzles, but not for late-game stuff. The way certain late-game spoiler pages were even "burned away" (if I'm recalling correctly) really added to the mystique. Meta in the best way.
