How does our organization of behavioural data impact our interpretations? In this paper, @iuliabadescu.bsky.social explores how classification itself can be a form of interpretation, shaped by our own thoughts and beliefs about what we are seeing. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Primate Play and the Classificatory Making of Human Nature
Primate play is often interpreted as a developmental activity through which immature individuals acquire capacities used later in life. This essay uses play to examine a wider process in behavioral r...

How does our lived experience impact our science? In this essay, Michelle Rodriguez and colleagues reflect on Donna Haraway's Primate Visions, and consider how we can build on feminist primatology to incorporate queer and decolonial perspectives. www.prosocial.world/posts/harawa...

Same-sex sexual behaviour among mammals is widely observed, yet seldomly reported: Evidence from an online expert survey
Same-sex sexual behaviour (SSSB) occurs in most animal clades, but published reports are largely concentrated in a few taxa. Thus, there remains a paucity of published reports for most mammalian speci...

How do we determine if a behaviour is sexual or social, and why are we so obsessed with doing so? A new paper by Drs. Kirsty Graham and Michelle Rodrigues interrogates the false dichotomy between sexual and sociosexual behaviours. onlinelibrary-wiley-com.myaccess.library.utoronto.ca/doi/full/10....

What is the relationship between science and society? How does culture impact the production and dissemination of knowledge? In this new paper, Eppley et al interrogate how systems of oppression bias our research, and how Queer perspectives can address these. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

Thrilled to share that our new paper is out today! 🎉 We report the first description of same-sex sexual behaviour in Rwenzori Angolan colobus monkeys - and find it may play a role in male social bonding within their multilevel societies. Perfect Valentine’s Day reading ❤️🐒 rdcu.be/e31J9

Excellent new paper out from the Savolainen lab. They found that SSB expression in primates was more likely in species living in difficult environments, with longer life histories, and those with more complex social systems. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

New lab paper! We ran a vervet #foraging #experiment where we created both #scramble and #contest. This evened foraging success, but experiencing more #competition still led to #risk averse #decisions by the monkeys, showing the importance of this variable. www.frontiersin.org/journals/beh...
