Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 31/03/2025Happens to me in the UK, I say no thanks to handing out personal information to a stranger on an inbound call and they're like "but it's for security I can't talk to you without it" and I'm like.... You called me!! Worries me how many folks just blindly give this info out as it's normalised. 110
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 23/03/2025I've just gone back to petrol from EV. I can say charging speeds was not one of the reasons at all. I just treated it like my phone and put it on charge at home and it was always ready. Think I fast charged in public about 5 times in 3 years. Home and work chargers are the way, for sure. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 21/03/2025Anyone else feeling burned out by AI? I definitely feel it accelerates me but the cognitive overload of simply doing more things is starting to take a toll. Am I the weak link here? Haha 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 16/01/2025Bought a backbone for my phone in the airport and it's ace. Very happy impulse purchase. Looking forward to trying out gamestream on it when I get home. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 16/01/2025First time in Helsinki airport, it's really nice, not sure about this hashtag though, "future of hel" 😂 020
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 16/01/2025I say no to everything AI on my phone (and everywhere else) and yet "AI Core" is still my biggest app arghhhhh 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 10/01/2025GCP support is so funny at times. me: Raises ticket, vertex response times are 10x the norm for the past few hours, this causes customer impact on real-time systems. them (a week later): Suggest you implement retries. :| 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 07/01/2025As someone with a 4070ti, please listen to my advice. Ignore the 5070 marketing, 12gb vram truly sucks. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 07/01/2025The way Google Cloud pushes dedicated commitments for individual services is to get remotely stable service, if you squint, is basically what we had on prem where we had to CapEx dedicated hardware for specific projects. Cloud is less appealing by the day. 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 02/01/2025Haha I was thinking about this today. Playing ff16, and remembered getting ff7 with a physical guide that showed me all the secrets. I actually enjoyed the game more because I felt like I missed nothing. Without it I feel like I'm making mistakes that would require replays, which I won't do. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 02/01/2025The new @prometheus.io v3 UI is _such_ an improvement. Kudos. 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 01/01/2025My ff16 journey so far: This is dull Oh thats a cool skill, I'll play more Bored again Oh wow cool I can fight as ifrit, I'll play more Bored Oooo new eikons Bored of unnecessarily long eikon fights Start skipping cutscenes Bored/quit I've had 25 hours of of it though so can't complain. £2/hour. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 26/12/2024Me: going to run slow today, nursing a bit of a hip injury Garmin: looool you're slow, old and unfit, I've reduced your vo2 max and fitness age just to shame you. Pathetic. 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 25/12/2024As someone who has gone through Fitbit, apple watch, Samsung gear watches and now finally Garmin, you will not regret. Best way I can describe Garmin is a fitness watch first, everything else second, whereas all the others prioritise the other way around. 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 25/12/2024People playing POE2, is it worth playing if you're burned out from d4, or more of the same? 110
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 25/12/2024I much prefer gaming on a controller but anything fps, or mmo's (bar ff14) just feels better on kb&m. You could argue with mmo's the complexity is a game design issue (ff14 does it well) but when it comes to FPS/aiming I just can't use a controller! 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 25/12/2024Using steam link? How did it perform? Did you stream any non Linux native (proton) games? 100
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 25/12/2024$1000 in 2006 is about $1600 today, so it's basically a like for like swap if you get yourself a nice errrrr 65"... 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 25/12/2024Baulders gate 3 runs perfectly! Ff16 runs but about 20% slower, same for cyberpunk. To be honest I would probably game on it too but the fact I can't get game streaming to work smoothly was the deal breaker really. I'll have another stab, could well be a skill issue 🤣 110
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 24/12/2024As a desktop though. Very very happy with pop os. Now I've got it all set up, it's just a lovely desktop environment. I'll be keeping windows around for gaming only which is a shame, but everything else can comfortably move. 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 24/12/2024Linux gaming adventures continued. Quite a few games run without any issues using proton, and it's reasonably seamless. I look up the game on protondb.com first to check for settings. Others have about a 20% frame drop compared to windows. Game streaming (sunshine) is unplayable however. 230
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 21/12/2024Oooo I think I might have found a Linux distro that works well with Nvidia out the box and generally feels.... Good. Pop_os! 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 20/12/2024This is why I don't use public transport in Manchester. Believe me, I don't like sitting in traffic, and driving in general, and contributing to congestion and pollution, but when my option is a public transport system where 1 in 10 gets cancelled - it somewhat forces the hand. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 18/12/2024Completely unrelated to your ask but I started using rollup for something recently and it's bloody awesome. Thanks. 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 18/12/2024Probably spent about 3 months migrating all our apps to ESM. What an ecosystem mess that was. Today went to look at eslint 8 -> 9, dear god. Looks even worse. I've worked in so many different languages in my career but Javascript, as much as I love it, feels the most - broken. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 17/12/2024www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBK6... everything about this performance is perfect. It's, just so good.youtube.comCorey Taylor - Snuff (Acoustic)YouTube video by Corey Taylor 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 15/12/2024Maybe it's motivation for me to move away from Nvidia next time round! 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 15/12/2024Me: reads loads about how Linux gaming has improved in recent years, gets excited at the prospect of binning windows. Also me: loads up my Linux mint distro, updates the graphics card drivers and now it just black screens after login. Nothings. Changed. 110
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 10/12/2024Was this in response to my thread? If so - I'm sorry you've taken it that way, that wasn't the intent at all. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024Me: I'm going to dust off and restring my guitar and start playing again. Also me: traps his index finger under the Floyd rose bridge crushing the nail enough I now won't be able to play guitar for a few weeks 🤣 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024Slept on capability of LLMs... In a code base coding style is important, and LLM's are all the rage, so have you considered having it refactor all your code infused with your favourite artist? Slipknot? Taylor Swift? 020
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024I'm still unconvinced that making users decide which deployment modality to use based on their current and future undefined requirements is healthy. Not to mention the code fork/complexity. If anything i'd say go all in on ambient, fill the gaps, and retire sidecars. 110
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024And for native sidecars, I use them in production as I have worked around all the issues, and documented them for others, but it still pains me to see people struggle to use them because of the bugs (that to be clear, don't impact me at all). 110
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024For example, I wouldn't write blog posts on how to deal with Istio upgrade issues for myself, that is squarely focused at helping the community to continue to adopt the project and keep up to date. 020
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024Mmmm kinda, but I'd say more I represent a collective of longer term Istio users rather than my specific needs. I've never advocated a feature or capability that only I need, the ones I really get behind are those I know will better the project and (hopefully) that's come across in GitHub 310
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024No not at all, I'm saying the prioritisation decisions such individuals have to make about what they work on becomes more challenging and naturally more skewered towards the success of the vendor product. Eg, making a decision about a feature being OSS or not. It's a hard balance. 100
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024Also, I'd be careful defining the community as lines of code. For example I've advocated Istio since it was alpha, I've helped countless users implement it. I've raised 330 issues and spent countless hours testing, and blogging about new releases. But I'm not "community" because that isn't LOC? 120
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024Perhaps the conflict here is the definition of community. I'm framing it more as the user base. I don't believe that those two communities pull harmoniously in the same direction. 100
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024Why? APIs can evolve, no? Otherwise you'll green field every time you come up against API challenges? In the last 5 years sidecars have changed a lot! Are we saying they're now stuck in time? 100
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024But you're working on telemetry features in ambient that won't make it to the OSS version? Sure you'll change core things which enable that vendor specific capability. That's the type of conflict I mean. 110
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024That's fair, as I said at the start, this is just feels for me as an outsider and I will be happy if my feels are wrong. For what it's worth I tried to find some folks to help with the envoy issue around httpclient5 in my org or 400+ Devs, and couldn't. That project is less accessible that Istio. 010
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024Broadly, yeah. I've watched ambient get taken GA whilst people still can't adopt native sidecars without hacky workarounds. I don't believe that decision is entirely driven by what's best for the community project, it's obviously partly driven by vendors priorities. 110
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 09/12/2024Quality not quantity. What are those people building, and which directions are they being pulled in, and how are their decisions being influenced. 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 08/12/2024I admire your positivity. Unfortunately, based on things I've seen and conversations I've had recently - I don't share it. Hopefully I'm reading the situation wrong, but let's come back to this in 2 years and see 🤣 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 08/12/2024Don't get me wrong btw a lot of this is just "feels" from someone heavily involved with Istio for many years. It just "feels" in a bad place. Also to be clear, I sincerely hope I'm wrong! 000
Karl Stoney @karlstoney.com · 08/12/2024I don't. I mean fractured, and unsupported. Where commercial entities have stopped improving the core. Where features vary greatly across vendors because they're not incentivised to make those things OSS. Where change that does happen is driven by commercial need not the OSS projects community. 100
