Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Nice to see my collection in such excellent company. Happy reading, @runalongwomble.bsky.social! 060
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026I don't disagree. But my original point was that the rewards for "successful" creators in these traditional spaces have declined greatly. For a mid-tier author they are very unlikely to be able to make a full time living from their writing, but there are mid-tier indie authors who are doing this. 100
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Totally agree. The overwhelming majority of indie authors will not sell in high volumes (though I don't necessarily think that means they've "failed" - it depends what they're goals are. I'm only saying the OTHER route is also very difficult and becoming even less rewarding than it was.static.klipy.comSuperstore: Amy Sosa's 'All Bad' OpinionALT: Superstore: Amy Sosa's 'All Bad' Opinion 000
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026To put it another way - "getting lucky" is currently the ONLY viable career path for authors. Either by striking gold as an indie or navigating trad pub against terrible odds. It's just a question of which kind of luck. 100
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Sure? But it is also very very rare to become successful through traditional publishing. Neither of these things are normal. 100
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026I mean, to be clear that would be my PREFERRED trajectory. I am an agented author with books on submission to trad publishers. But a high proportion of the current best seller lists are made of writers who got their start as indies. 200
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Hmmm... Matt Dinniman? SenLinYu? Colleen Hoover? Freida McFadden? All built their audiences first as indie and THEN took trad deals. Seems to be becoming much more common. 100
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Was great chatting with you at the banquet and congrats again on 1) Your nomination and 2) Your exceptionally cool crown. 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Good point! Have been trying to think of a historical analogy and the best I can do is that artists are choosing to be wandering bards rather than performing at Court. 010
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026I suspect a higher proportion of creators across a lot of media will be indie from the start in future. The economics seem to work better that way in many cases, since bigger platforms hold on to an ever larger share of the value creators produce... 210

Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Yeah she'll be fine. Even though I personally will probably give it a miss. "Thing I don't care about could succeed anyway shocker!" 100
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026I imagine it's probably a pretty satisfying way to operate as a creator as well, since you have more of a relationship with the audience - but you would know! Is it? (I love Origin Stories, by the way.) 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026It will be! Currently very interested in indie creator models, having sold my first pre-release copies of my indie published story collection over the weekend. Felt quite... freeing. www.goodreads.com/book/show/25...goodreads.comVisions & Hauntings: Tales of Women Wanting MoreThirteen fantastical stories of strong-willed women in … 010
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Well, unfortunately, reader wants seem to be accounted for retroactively and inaccurately. "Huh, turns out people DO want sexy monster books." 130
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Yes, but on the other hand she doesn't need to bring her whole Guardian audience with her to make the venture profitable - a smaller but highly engaged audience can return more revenue than a small share of a larger one because you have more control. So the business model COULD work. 330
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Hm. That seems rather foolish as my understanding is many readers gravitate to longer audiobooks because they like to feel they are getting more value for their Audible credits. 160
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026👀 Wishing a rotten day to this this woman who is bringing shame to the "I'm trying to be a writer" community. 010
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Good morning all! I'm still buzzing from an exciting, exhausting, inspiring, informative and just hugely enjoyable weekend at #fantasycon in Glasgow. Here's my write up of 5 things that happened to me there... faerypolitic.substack.com/p/five-thing...faerypolitic.substack.comFive Things That Happened At Fantasy ConThis weekend, I was in Glasgow for Fantasy Con. 070
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 12/10/2026Read @georgesandison.bsky.social ‘s short story Agency on the train home from Fantasy Con. A creepy tale which reveals the true fact that London Landlord are bloodthirsty eldritch monsters. Obviously. My biggest jump scare was the mention of Beulah Rd. which is 200 yards from my house. 142
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 11/10/2026I was on the jury for this and we had the same question! Was confirmed as the Danny Robbins one. 010
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 11/10/2026That moment of shock and uncertainty (“wait, did he really just say…?”) is so real. Don’t beat yourself up for not reacting “correctly”, but let’s also not let this go unchallenged even if the challenge comes a bit late. 000
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Do we have video of this?! Because I really want to see it with my own eyes. I’m shook by it 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Did anyone ask a challenging question about it? How was the reaction in the room? I was shocked when I heard about it afterwards 220
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 11/10/2026What time do you leave? I’m around until the end so hopefully we can connect… 100
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Are you still around? I’m on the Importance of Reading panel at 2 if you want to come find me before or after that 100
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 10/10/2026You guys, I don’t want to brag, but multiple actual strangers have bought my book here at Fantasy Con. #authorgoals 170

Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Are you around this morning? Shall we try to find each other? 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 10/10/2026I’m in the Argyll room now and am pretty free for the next couple hours if you’re around for a chat? 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Will be reading my Halloweeny Lake District faery market story shortly in the Hebrides room at #FantasyCon - hope to see you there? 000
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026BTW, if you'd like a review copy of my collection let me know - I've got a small number of print copies pre-release for the Con. It has some horror stories in it but also some SF and fantasy so appreciate it may not be right in the site's sweet spot. 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Glad to hear it! The only two times I've needed surgery it ended up being an emergency both times so I skipped right past the queue. Would not recommend an emergency gall bladder removal or retinal reattachment (just last month) in general - but the severity was excellent for speeding things along. 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Argh sorry that they are messing you about with your surgery date, but glad you are able to make it for the all important barcon 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026On my way to Glasgow for #fanyasycon - will be doing an author reading today at 5 if anyone fancies a pre-dinner story hour! 050
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Me! I’ll be on the Fairy Tales and the Importance of Reading for Life panel. And reading from my own work today at 5 in the Hebrides. The room, not the region! 110
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Kit is the loveliest person and you should also buy her book in which three kittens investigate a murder. I am reading it right now and it’s got adorable cozy vibes. Plus, obviously, the murdering. 120
Karin Robinson @karinjr.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Yay! When would be good for you? I’m around from 2ish tomorrow until Sunday 5ish 100
