20 October 2007. Tunis. A simple gesture marked the end of a month-long hunger strike. Ayachi Hammami brought deglet nour dates to Maya Jribi and Ahmed Néjib Chebbi. After thirty days without food, the two opposition figures ended their strike. The image is more than a political anecdote. It captures a recurring feature of Tunisia's modern history: when all other avenues of political expression were closed, hunger strikes became one of the few remaining ways for opponents of authoritarian rule to make themselves heard.
