February was very busy, from championing our fishing industry and fighting for local libraries to standing up for health and social care services. I have been making sure your voices are heard.
In Parliament, I delivered a speech on the Opportunities and Challenges for Scotland’s Fishing Sector, making the case for greater support for the industry. We can secure a thriving future for our fishing sector while protecting the livelihoods that depend on it. I also spoke about the role of education in addressing child poverty, giving every child the best start in life, regardless of their background. I made it clear that local libraries need to be protected, doing everything we can to save them. I was delighted to hear that Cullen library in Moray has been saved, and I continue work on others across Aberdeenshire.
As Convener of the Cross-Party Group on Fisheries and Coastal Communities, I set the agenda for an important meeting that welcomed international guests. This was a fantastic opportunity to share expertise and discuss best practices. Ensuring that our coastal communities have a voice in these discussions is vital, and I am proud to lead on this work.
Out in the constituency, I visited Fraserburgh Academy for a Q&A session with varied topics from socioeconomics to crime and energy. In Gardenstown, I attended a public meeting about the seawall, listening to local concerns and discussing the next steps for securing action on this critical issue.
I was delighted to sponsor an event with Ocean Winds, reinforcing my commitment to Scotland’s renewable energy future, ensuring that we take the advantages locally but that also fisheries and the spatial squeeze in our marine environments are taken into account. I co-convened a British Heart Foundation event, backing efforts to improve heart health across Scotland, as after losing my own mother when she was younger I want to see work to prevent that happening to another family. Brexit Britain. Folk comment that Banffshire and Buchan Coast wanted Brexit. But, when I speak to constituents they are very clear that what they were sold was far from what’s been delivered. Tories were touting snake oil and Labour are now supporting it. Scottish independence is the real remedy.
