Submitted my story for the #HarlandPrijs speculative fiction short story competition. Now I just have to wait till February to find out what the jury thinks of my story. Anyways, on to the next story!

No... they only get pickles a thousand years later when Earth rejoins the Federation in the later seasons of Discovery. That's why the show is called Discovery... it's short for Star Trek: Canada's Discovery of Pickles.

The same will be true with everything else they're throwing genAI at, or robots at for that matter. No one will care about "art" created by genAI, or that a humanoid robot can outrun a human every single time. We'll care about humans being human.

But are chess-tournaments played by computers? No. It's still humans playing other humans. Because after the initial novelty wears off no-one gives a shit if a computer can win. We care about humans challenging themselves.

There is another thing that gets me as well. Just to take the given example of chess: having a computer win at chess is a solved problem. Has been for decades now. You don't even need "AI"... you can brute force that shit.

This might not necessarily be a positive thing. By the above definition Classical Athens might well have been queernormative and that society had sexism ingrained in it in a way that makes the Taliban jealous.

Eddie van Dijk @karanov.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
For me a queernormative world is a world where being queer is the norm. As in, it's assumed that most people are, one way or another, whether it's through gender identity or sexual orientation or combination there-off or anything else, queer.

I always have a book I'm reading and a book I'm listening to as an audiobook. Currently I'm listening to 1177BC: the Year Civilization Collapsed. And all I can say is... oh yes... Eric Cline... tell me more about late bronze-age trade networks. 🤤 It occurs to me that I might be kind of weird.

I can't help but think about how, with the rise of literacy in archaic and classical Greece you had people complaining that writing was detrimental to memorisation. I'm beginning to think they were probably right.

No, I'd have distressed family members go out to get me if it looks like the exorcism is about to take a turn for the worst. I'm considerate like that.

** "Link" means risky more than dangerous in this context. Which should weaken the catch-phrase but instead just gives it an irreverence to the danger that feels fitting for Darkwing Duck.

Eddie van Dijk @karanov.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
* "Lekker" means tasty and nice (and in some contexts sexually attractive). In this context it signifies an anticipation of the danger that's ahead.

That sentence, in Dutch, has the right amount of anticipation* and irreverence** combined with alliteration that it's just

It's not often that I prefer the Dutch dub over the original... but Darkwing Duck is an exception. Purely because they translated "Let's get dangerous" as "Laten we lekker link gaan doen".

While I'm waiting on feedback from my bèta-readers I've started on another story. Wrote 989 words today and made a good start. Let's see if I can finish a rough draft in the coming week. Who knows, maybe I'll enter two stories in the Harlands this year. #AmWriting

The difference, in my experience, is that dogs give you unconditional love from the get go and it's up to you not to betray that trust while with cats you need to earn their love but once you've got it it's very hard to lose.

Also, entering a story that got edited by a professional into this competition would feel wrong somehow. But explaining why would require a lecture on the weird history of writing competitions in Dutch speculative fiction.
000
Eddie van Dijk @karanov.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Ha! No. It's still strictly amateur hour over here. Truth is there are very few editors in the Dutch speaking world who are both good and interested in speculative fiction. Shout out to Anna Mattaar, who is both of those things.

From my alpha readers I just want to know if the story structure itself works. If the skeleton of the story works everything else can be remoulded around it. If it doesn't, there's no use to even start revising it and I might as well go back to the drawing board.

I got through the first big round of revisions for the short story I intend to enter into the Harland Prijs writing competition. Right now I am my own least favourite writer. But I know it's because I've so much time revising that one story.

That last sentence is also why all fiction is inherently political. Any story you write will, due to the assumptions about the world you do an do not incorporate, say something about how you think society should or should not function. And that is politics.

Yesterday I finally finished (the first draft of) a story again. It's been a while and I'm so happy with finishing something again. I just gave it a polish and send it off to my alpha-readers. Now the anxiety inducing wait till I get feedback can begin. #AmWriting

I've been reading a lot more since I realised that if people can walk around with their phones in front of their faces I can do the same with a book! In the almost 10 years since then I'vd only tripped three times. Totally worth it. 📚

I lost my Pilot at Eurocon in Berlin. Now, because I felt weirdly naked without a fountain pen, I went to my local pen store to get a new one. They didn't have a Pilot within the "every day use, might lose at convention" price range but they did have a Lamy. An I bloody well love this Lamy.
