APS global summit attendees, check out the inaugural T-shirt of division of material physics. The back side contains graphics I designed. It's a collage of stylized images depicting systems or phenomena relevant to material science research. I hope you all have a great week. #APS #APSglobalsummit

This is by far my most colorful crochet project. Instead of yarn, I used leftover embroidery thread. Joining new thread every so often was a bit inconvenient, but the colors made it all worth it! I mean look at all the layers😁🌈. Pattern by @handmadebyraine on YouTube. #crochet #rainbow #embroidery

It's -10°C (with wind chill) in Boston today. So I wore my homemade balaclava. In India we used to call these 'monkey caps' 🙈🙉🙊. As a child, I used to hate wearing them to school. And now I made myself one and I proudly wear it. Age makes people utilitarian I guess.

I have been hooked to this word game for a while now. The challenge is to guess the title of a Wikipedia page from some completely redacted paragraphs. Today's puzzle was right up my alley. I found #pedantle #960 in 15 guesses! 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟧🟧🟧🟧🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥🟥 cemantle.certitudes.org/pedantle

A favorite commission this year, a dividing cell with an extra detail. Colleagues of a retiring researcher commissioned me to add the specific structure she worked on—the spindle pole body—to the sculpture. Here it is close up, in sterling silver embedded in the bronze nuclear membrane. 🔬#SciArt
A dividing budding yeast cell in steel, bronze, and silver, with apatite gemstones for the chromosomes. The sculpture rests in my hand, a physical cutaway view with many cellular structures visible. Closeup of the sculpture, centered on the spindle pole body, a tiny structure looking like a stack of pancakes from the side, embedded in the long curved nuclear membrane, tethering the spindle (a splayed bundle of silver branches each terminating in a jewel chromosome). The spindle structure is polished silver, lodged in the polished bronze of the membranes and surrounded by bronze endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and other structures.

Back to my desk at Brandeis. I missed this space. Over the years I have customized it to fit my work style. I added potted plants, enough notebooks, a personal whiteboard, tablecloth to prevent static, silverware, doodling pens, and a lot of free space. It's my zen. 🧪⚛️ #womeninphysics #furmip

New Publication 🚨 : Layne Frechette shows how active matter, which consumes energy to create persistent and directed motion, can be harnessed to create dynamic assemblies with tunable sizes, shapes, and motion. Check it out : arxiv.org/abs/2410.05555 #ActiveMatter #SelfAssembly #BrandeisMRSEC

Tree of Life by Leonard Eisenberg! You can clearly see the evolutionary timeline. Humans are in the farthest corner. Gives a sense of how small we are in the bigger picture. I was introduced to this diagram at a talk today by Mazi Jalaal. #activesolids #KITP #activematter

If you don’t deeply and strongly define what success looks like for yourself, I can assure you a 23 year old management consultant making more money than you can imagine will absolutely do it for you. And your admin will believe them over you. Know what you are fighting for and why. Always.

Reading the paper in Cell about how to close the scissor plots in gender representation at senior academic positions, I feel just a touch of pessimism. Having reached a level of seniority (middle management) I didn’t think I ever would, I read these great ideas wanting more, much more /1.

Many #scientists currently attending the #KITP programs were away from their families during this #Thanksgiving. So we coordinated and put together a massive potluck dinner at the #Munger Physics Residence. I am thankful to be part of this academic family 😃.
Four tables laden with food prepared by scientists currently staying at the KITP Munger Residence. It was a diverse spread featuring traditional Thanksgiving dishes and festive dishes from other cultures. We had a four course meal complete with mains, sides, dessert and drinks.
