Back in the fall of 2000, Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh recruited four other musicians to join his Phil Lesh & Friends ensemble establishing what became known as “The Quintet” lineup. It was 24 years ago today that Lesh and guitarists Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring, keyboardist Rob Barraco and drummer John Molo set out on the first “The Q” tour.

Reunited for Lesh’s birthday concerts in March of 2016, October of 2021 and March of 2024, the lineup was active from the 2000 Fall Tour through Phil’s joining his former band mates in The Dead in 2003. The Quintet’s first show of the tour took place on September 30, 2000 at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, Vermont.
That night saw Haynes, Barraco and Lesh trade vocals on such Dead staples as “Here Comes Sunshine,” “Friend Of The Devil,” “Cosmic Charlie” and “Cold Rain & Snow” in the first set. Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” – a first time played by Phil & Friends – also sprung up in set one with Haynes taking on the singing duties.

The second set opened with Bob Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” trailed by a lengthy portion of improv that saw Herring and Haynes swirling together while Lesh and Molo established a stable but ever shifting rhythm for them to follow. The post-Dead Robert Hunter composition penned with Lesh, “Mirror of Thalassa,” appeared in the second set, as did the first Phil & Friends renditions of “Lazy River Road” and “The Gol

It was three for three at the Royal Conservatory of Music's Koerner Hall Tuesday night. Three musicians astonishing in their technical prowess. Three decidedly different points of musical origin. And the third time the new hall has been home, in its short life, to a terrific (and sold-out) concert.
Not to say that the astonishing ones â€“ Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain and Edgar Meyer â€“ hit it out of the park every time, to continue (then conclude) the baseball metaphors. As a trio their musical aspiration is to have an intricate and largely improvisational conversation, without an entirely shared lexicon. With that challenge comes fairly high risk potential, and sometimes the results were more stunning than others. (That alone should tell you something, though â€“ the baseline was â€œstunning.â€) As typically advertised, the meeting of these three virtuosos is about bluegrass (Fleck), world music (Hussain), and western classical music (Meyer). But this does a disservice to the music these three gentlemen (or â€œgentlemen â€¦ and musicians too,â€ as at one point Hussain quipped) play. Leaving aside the fact that Hussain, the world's most famous tabla player, is originally from an Indian classical-music tradition, not a â€œworldâ€ one, and the unparallel banjoist Fleck is to bluegrass as Charlie Parker was to swing, the music they play together takes no pains to emphasize specific musical styles. Of course all three performers have a long history of genre busting.

Performance notes: Mysterious Ways and New Year's Day are played for the first time on the second leg of the 360° Tour.
