First Alert Forecast: Hurricane Warning posted for Kauai and Niihau, Flood Watch posted for all islands

At 5am Lowell had winds of 150 mph, was 630 miles SSW of Lihue, and moving west at 7 mph. The turn north will likely happen sometime today. Lowell is forecast to slowly weaken to category 3 as it passes just west of Niihau and Kauai. The track from the National Hurricane Center will put the center of the storm about 150 miles west of Kauai late Monday.

It’s going to get windy... and that’s likely to start sometime Wednesday evening. The strong winds won’t be directly from Hurricane Lowell. The storm will be too far south to directly impact us. But Lowell’s presence to our south will create what’s called a pressure gradient, and that will crank up our trade winds.

Lowell is becoming a bigger weather factor for Hawaii this week, but the impacts will likely change as the storm passes south of the islands. We will be facing gusty trade winds and as the storm passes to our south.
