Yet their release claimed they were guided by the council. This sucks.

Would it not have been helpful for mathematicians and scientists if OpenAI's math drop came with better documentation about the process. What prompts were used, what checks done? I am a little surprised that the advisory council did not advise this

Physicists are not always so serious. Niels Bohr loved Westerns (and famously came up with the gunslinger effect). Dirac was a big fan of Mickey Mouse. Some of Nambu's favorite books were the adventures of V. I. Warshawski—Sara Paretsky’s Chicago detective. Stephen Hawking loved The Simpsons.

The full story is that Dirac and his wife Manci had a disagreement over whether to watch a TV special featuring the pop singer Cher. Dirac resolved the argument by buying a second TV.

It sounds like a timeline glitch, but Paul Dirac bought a color TV just to watch Cher.

Hawking radiation can be derived via -Bogoliubov transforms (Hawking's original 1974 paper, Unruh 1976) -path integrals (Hawking and Hartle, 1976) -stress tensor in 2D (Davies, Fulling and Unruh, 1976) -conformal anomaly (Christensen and Fulling, 1977) -Euclidean BH (Gibbons and Hawking, 1977)

Teaching Modern Physics this semester and increasingly feeling like in physics there is this dogma that has been canonized over the years that we teach the students. But if you know where to look, you can find the apocryphal texts. 🧪⚛️

We would conclude that we understood the analog system wrong. So what are they teaching us? Thoughts welcome. (One argument I have heard, but don't find too convincing, is that they demonstrate that transplanckian issues don't affect Hawking radiation)

I have a question about analog gravity/qft experiments: what do we learn from them about nature? The math of QFT in curved spacetime was never in any doubt, and that's the part these experiments test. Put different, a negative result won't lead us to conclude that we got QFT wrong. ⚛️

Had a good time at RQI-N. Nice to get an overview of where the field of relativistic quantum information is at. Got a few ideas for future projects too!

I’ve worked in two areas—-loop quantum gravity and string/holography. One of these is stagnant and the other healthy. Hint: I no longer work on loop quantum gravity.

Put differently: if a field is healthy, its bottlenecks will keep shifting with time. Stagnant fields are stuck at the same bottleneck. The fashions in such fields are just new approaches to tackle the same problem. They fail, slowly fade out, and a new fashion takes its place.

A sure sign of a stagnant field is that fashions come and go, leaving no trace. Healthy fields are not immune to fashion, but some of them do end up transforming the fields, and future developments build on top of them. 1/2 🧪

The fields of relativistic quantum information and theoretical high energy physics have some overlap, but somehow the communities do not talk to each other as much as one might expect. So it is nice to attend RQI-N 2026 at IISER Mohali and learn about what they are up to.

I thought: who wouldn't, to meet a genius! Rafael was very generous with his time and over the next couple of days we had a long conversations about causal sets, other approaches to quantum gravity, and foundations of quantum theory. Rafael was a deep thinker and it was amazing, a cherished memory

Years ago, Rafael was visiting RRI Bangalore. I was a PhD student at the time. I travelled from Chennai to Bangalore (5 hrs by train) to talk quantum gravity with him. When I met them, his wife Fatma greeted me with "Oh you are the guy who travelled all this way to meet Rafael!" 1/2 ⚛️

Deeply saddened to learn that Rafael Sorkin is no more. One of the deepest and most original thinkers of quantum gravity and the pioneer of causal set theory, he was also among the nicest, gentlest physicists I have met.

New paper! Two recent approaches to black hole information loss paradox are islands and holography of information (HoI). We studied HoI in a 2d gravity model and investigated the difference between HoI and islands. Our result says that they correspond to different quantizations.

Pauli once told von Neumann the result of a difficult physical problem and how he had arrived at it. Von Neumann replied that the same result could be derived from just one axiom. Pauli responded, 'Herr von Neumann! If physics could be done with axioms, you'd be a great physicist!' ⚛️🧪

So Datt had done the main technical part of O&S earlier than them, but did not connect it with collapse of a star. But O&S also matched the solutions across the shell and described the physical process of collapse.

Very little is known about Datt. He died at an early age from a failed operation. However, his paper was not about collapse. What he did was to solve Einstein's eqn outside a contracting shell. O&S studied the collapse of a star which they modeled by a contracting shell
