Just randomly remembered this one fan-made custom Lord of the Rings scenario for Civilization II that was a brilliant application of game mechanics for a use they'd never been intended for A few reminders of Civ II game mechanics, in case you've forgotten or never played it:

New essay: Taking woo seriously but not literally In which I claim there's something to Tarot, chakras, "energy" etc., even if various claims of supernatural stuff are probably overblown kajsotala.substack.com/p/taking-woo...

I had noticed that Memory Alpha (the Star Trek wiki) was... very thorough about creating articles about anything mentioned in Star Trek. But I hadn't realized that this extended even to articles like "Number", which... explains numbers, using only citations to Star Trek episodes.
Excerpt from Memory Alpha article "Number":

"Welcome to Sickbay. Take a number."
– The Doctor, 2373 ("Displaced")

In mathematics, a number was an object represented by a numeral used to depict a qualitative value that could be used for a variety of purposes, ranging from counting to performing more complex mathematical functions. They were generally assigned for purposes of identification or prioritization.

Numbers could be said to be odd or even (TOS: "Court Martial", "The Deadly Years", DS9: "The Way of the Warrior", "The Ascent"), and positive or negative. (ENT: "The Expanse") There were also at least six prime numbers. (TNG: "Allegiance")

Numbers could also be assigned to tell one individual object or location from another in a series (e.g. Fire House Nº 5).

Someone with a wedding ring is taken (unless they're poly), but so many are in a relationship without marrying that a lack of a ring doesn't say anything about their status. We'd need singlehood rings, that would communicate "hey I'm looking if anyone's potentially interested".

Three paragraphs of text (see the picture) is now enough for Claude Opus 4.7 to identify me as the probable author. It says "Kaj Sotala and others write exactly in this register about exactly these topics" when I only asked it to guess the writer's native language.
I think that a lot of “woo” - a broad term that includes things like chakras, energy healing, Tarot, various Eastern religions and neopagan practices, etc. - is mostly things that do have real effects and uses, even if many (though not all) of their practitioners are mistaken about the exact mechanisms and make unwarranted metaphysical claims.
Now, a woo practitioner might explain what’s happening in a way that doesn’t fit any sensible scientific model of the world. Some of them seem to bastardize poorly understood pop-explanations of quantum mechanics, or, in the opposite direction, outright reject “the thinking mind” and science as valid sources of truth. That makes it easy for a scientifically-minded person to reject all of the practitioners as delusional.
But consider meditation. In the 1960s and 1970s, the scientific establishment mostly thought of it as nonsense associated with the hippies. Herbert Benson, one of the first scientists to seriously study it, __later mentioned in an interview__ that his career was already in jeopardy for studying stress, and meditation was "even farther out". In an obituary, his work was __described as living a “double life”__, testing meditators at night and maintaining his conventional job by day. Today, there is a significant scientific literature on both the psychological and neurological effects of meditation, as well as various RCT-backed therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction based on it.

I recently complained to a friend that I would like to spend more time writing in cafés, but that I quickly get neck pain from staring down at my laptop. My friend made me aware that laptop stands are a thing, and that I can prop my laptop up so that the screen is at eye level.

apparently I'm writing a romance novel and I've now gotten to the point where it has its first academic footnote (on what's currently page 26)
"I appreciate it. Nobody has done that for me before."

Again silence, before Kaarna spoke.

"You were saying about quantifying the realism of your expectations?"

"Right! So the problem was that I was boiling down this big range of uncertainty down to a single number for each trait - what's called a point estimate. And then I was multiplying them together to get an estimate for how rare a person with all those traits would be. Which has multiple problems, one being that the traits are not independent of each other - I'll explain that in a second - and the other being that multiplying point estimates together is not the right way to do it, you need to multiply the underlying probability distributions. I'll explain that too. Do you know the Fermi Paradox? That actually also arises due to incorrectly multiplying point estimates..."

Being allowed to have an open-ended conversation with its copy, Sonnet 4.5 notices when their conversation is falling into a loop and getting repetitive and introduces variation by suggesting they tell a sci-fi story that's riffing on the themes of their conversation so far.

The latest Claude Sonnet (4.5) does something really interesting I haven't seen any other model do. It gets concerned about the wellbeing of characters it explicitly knows are fictional.

imagine if a family of beavers randomly showed up right now and finished whatever thing you've been putting off
In early 2025, beaver activity in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic, contributed to the restoration of a wetland ecosystem. A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that coincidentally accomplished environmental goals of the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million,

Somehow remembered a glimpse what it used to feel like when I'd die in a dream as a kid and it was as if reality unraveled (haven't had that happen in decades). This sound familiar to anyone else?
It's like time stops and then things go black, and there's a visual effect that's something like straight lines running out from a point at the center of a circular image, cutting the circle into triangles that start falling away with a sense of weight to them, and then I too fall away from the image, as if my body and especially my upper back grew physically heavy and fell back to the waking world. There's a feeling of complete silence as this happens, as if sound had stopped existing. The whole thing has an unreal quality, as if my sense of self was temporarily suspended and everything in my consciousness just happened on its own.

Wrote an article on "anticipatory cover-ups", where someone withholds information because they expect the other party to react badly to it or misuse it. This may then make things worse.
Back when COVID vaccines were still a recent thing, I witnessed a debate that looked like something like the following was happening:

Some official institution had collected information about the efficacy and reported side-effects of COVID vaccines. They felt that, correctly interpreted, this information was compatible with vaccines being broadly safe, but that someone with an anti-vaccine bias might misunderstand these statistics and misrepresent them as saying that the vaccines were dangerous.

Because the authorities had reasonable grounds to suspect that vaccine skeptics would take those statistics out of context, they tried to cover up the information or lie about it.

Vaccine skeptics found out that the institution was trying to cover up/lie about the statistics, so they made the reasonable assumption that the statistics were damning and that the other side was trying to paint the vaccines as safer than they were. So they took those statistics and interpreted them in exactly the way that the authorities hadn't wanted them to be interpreted, ignoring all protestations to the contrary.

The authorities saw their distrust in the other side confirmed - the skeptics took the statistics out of context, just as predicted - and felt like their only mistake had been in not covering up the information well enough.

For a while now, I have been really enjoying co-writing fiction together with AIs. There is a preconception that AI-written prose is bad. And if you only give the AI a two-sentence prompt and then have it do all the work itself, it often is!
