Well… officially the excitement and hyper fixation on doing deep dives on bands has worn off. So I gotta find the next thing to tantalize my bluesky audience with.

Everyone - “wow, you’re poly? You must be having wild nights with all those partners!” Me (genuinely excited)- “oh yeah! I stayed up last night till 2am discussing what the political landscape of the Star Wars universe would look like 50 years after the fall of the first order!”

Everyone - “so why did you decide to become polyamorous?” Me - “so I could have a full pod of cute nerds to play Magic The Gathering: Commander with…”

SAROS is a beautiful game. It might also be the perfect example of how controls being fluid, precise, and responsive is essential to a great game. Didn’t expect to enjoy it so much. I also yell “It’s Rahuling Time!” Every time I start a run because Rahul Kohli is a hero. @rahulkohli13.bsky.social

My Dinosaur Life -2010 My Dinosaur Life arrives with a sharper edge and more aggressive tone than the band’s previous work. Its lyrics dive into trauma, memory, and the exhausting mental struggle of clawing your way out of depression, while still delivering the band’s signature hooks and energy.

Even If It Kills Me - 2007 Even If It Kills Me shows the band maturing both lyrically and musically, diving into heartbreak, mental strain, and self-reflection in deeply relatable ways. Pairing that emotional depth with some of their catchiest songwriting makes this one of their strongest albums.

Commit This To Memory - 2005 A defining album of my teenage years, and one that’s only become more relevant with time. It’s a brilliant examination of everyday struggles, love, growing up, and self-discovery, while standing as one of the most iconic releases in Motion City Soundtrack’s catalogue.

I Am The Movie - 2003 Motion City Soundtrack’s debut comes out strong, defining the signature sound they’d carry forward—synth-driven melodies, upbeat guitars, and Justin Pierre’s evocative lyricism. Several tracks stand out as early staples of the band’s legacy. Full analysis in the thread 🧵

Motion City Soundtrack is the next band I’ll be reviewing. An American pop-punk group formed in Minneapolis in 1997. Their first album dropping in the early 2000s. Across 7 studio albums, they blend vibrant, upbeat melodies with deeply personal, unfiltered lyricism.

I love Hollow Knight: Silksong so much. After a 4 month break (because Groal became frustrating) I have defeated Bilewater, and completed all wishes and side quests available to me before heading on to Lace II. I nearly forgot the absolute beauty of this games visuals, music, and gameplay.

Hello everyone. I’ve been really shy and weirdly terrified to say this out loud but I’m going to, because I think I just need to have it out there. I am an ethically non-monogamous, polyamorous, demi-sexual. I think I might be pan-sexual, but the type of attraction differs between various genders.

Blink-182 FINAL ASSESSMENT Final Band Average: 3.84 blink-182 stands out as a consistently strong band that stays true to its core while continuing to adapt and grow. Across their discography, their evolution is clear—not just in lyrical maturity, but in musical skill and experimentation.

One More Time -2023 One More Time sees the return of Tom DeLonge following Mark Hoppus’ cancer battle. The album feels like a mosaic of the band’s history, blending early punk energy, humor, and mature reflection. It’s a heartfelt reunion that captures the full scope of their evolution.

NINE - 2019 Nine is where Skiba’s role in the band feels fully defined, marking a new era. His edge brings an exciting and refreshing energy, but Tom’s absence still shifts the band’s trajectory, making it feel like a noticeable departure from their earlier evolution.

Kelly McLaughlin @kaiinreallife.bsky.social · 16/04/2026
California - 2017 After Tom’s departure, Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba steps in on guitar and vocals. The sound leans more into Mark’s pop-punk style, and while Tom’s absence is felt, the album still maintains consistency and delivers several strong tracks.

Neighbourhoods - 2011 After the band’s breakup over creative differences and shifting priorities, they reunited following Travis Barker’s plane crash. What followed is an album shaped by those differences. This isn’t a reunion struggling to reconnect, but a band returning with perspective.

Self Titled - 2003 Blink-182’s self titled album slingshots past any signs of stagnation that lingered from their previous album into bold experimentation. It feels like a band ready to evolve, pushing their sound and artistry forward, proving they had far more to offer than just teen pop-punk.

Take Off Your Pants and Jacket -2001 TOYPAJ follows in the aftermath of their breakout success, showing a band holding onto the spark that launched them. It carries much of what made Enema great, but in trying to preserve that formula, it feels like they limit their potential for growth.

Enema Of The State -1999 Enema of the State stands as one of the defining blueprints for pop punk’s mainstream explosion of the early 2000s. The addition of Travis Barker on drums adds a third pillar, and this record launches the band into massive popularity, kicking off a defining era of pop punk.

Dude Ranch -1997 Dude Ranch is the moment blink-182 comes into focus as a band. With standout songs that still rank among their best, the album is a major leap forward for them, balancing catchy hooks and humor with a stronger emotional core rooted firmly in the realities of growing up.

Cheshire Cat -1995 Cheshire Cat better captures what blink-182 brings to the table as a band. Catchy hooks and stronger songwriting push the album forward. While it’s still rooted in juvenile humor, there’s noticeably more edge and depth than on their debut. Full analysis in thread 🧵

Buddha -1994 Blink-182’s debut is a raw, uneven glimpse of their early potential. It lacks the polish of their later success, but delivers exactly what you’d expect—teen angst, breakups, crude humor, and a band still figuring things out in their earliest stages. Full analysis in thread 🧵

Next up is Blink-182 One of the most recognizable bands of the late 90s and early 2000s. Beneath the jokes and carefree energy is a band with far more depth, skill, and nuance than they’re often given credit for. I’ll be reviewing all their studio albums, ranking each song, & giving my analysis.

FINAL ASSESSMENT BOYS NIGHT OUT SCORE: 3.81/5 Across five releases, Boys Night Out averaged a strong 3.81/5, with a clear peak in their middle era. Trainwreck stands as their strongest and most consistent album, while Make Yourself Sick marks a massive leap forward, defining the band at their best

Black Dogs - 2016 With several members coming and going, and the band struggling creatively, it took years before new music emerged. Nearly a decade later, BNO released Black Dogs—an attempt to regain momentum that still carries many of their signature elements. Analysis in thread 🧵

Boys Night Out (Self Titled) - 2007 BNO steps away from murder sprees and morbidity toward a more mature, nuanced approach. The darkness remains, but now explores themes like addiction, and self-destructive behaviour. What once felt like a departure now stands as a strong, welcome evolution.

Kelly McLaughlin @kaiinreallife.bsky.social · 29/03/2026
Train Wreck - 2005 BNO evolves again, taking their morbid storytelling and crafting what might be one of the strongest concept albums I’ve ever heard. It demands a full listen, weaving a psychological thriller about one man’s mistake and his descent into madness.

Kelly McLaughlin @kaiinreallife.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
Make Yourself Sick - 2003 BNO’s first full album shows an immediate rise in consistency, song structure, and lyrical integrity. While it still leans on morbid, shocking imagery, it feels more like a signature the band is owning than a tired cliché—thanks in large part to Conner’s evolving writing.

Kelly McLaughlin @kaiinreallife.bsky.social · 27/03/2026
Broken Bones and Bloody Kisses - 2002 BNO’s earliest work leans heavily on shock-value lyrics and aggressive screaming. But even in these early songs, their musical talent and poetic depth are already bubbling beneath the surface, hinting at what’s to come. Full analysis in thread 🧵

the next band up for assessment. BOYS NIGHT OUT This band holds a special place in my heart. Emerging from the early 2000s post-hardcore/emo scene in Burlington, Ontario (just outside Toronto), it always felt special seeing a band from my area find real success—on their own terms.

All The Truth That I Can Tell - 2022 Dashboard leans into a more mature, gentler tone here, delivering reflective introspection. As always, it’s filled with heartfelt vocals, strong guitar work, and a vulnerable look into Carrabba’s life. Full analysis in thread 🧵

Crooked Shadows - 2018 After a hiatus driven by burnout from touring and production, Carrabba returned to rediscover his passion for songwriting. Nearly a decade later, Dashboard delivers an album full of energy, depth, and his signature raspy, emotional vocals. Full analysis in thread 🧵

Alter The Ending - 2009 Alter the Ending arrives with emotional depth and strong ballad writing. Released in both full band and acoustic versions, it lets listeners experience both sides of Dashboard’s sound—and both versions have some great peaks. Full analysis in thread 🧵

Kelly McLaughlin @kaiinreallife.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
The Shade of Poison Trees - 2007 Dashboard returns to its acoustic roots, exploring more diverse themes beyond heartbreak—fame, growing up, and harder truths. But in broadening its scope, does it capture the same emotional resonance as its earlier work? Full analysis in thread 🧵

Dusk and Summer - 2006 The commercially standout album that shot Dashboard Confessional into global fame. It weaves in more pop and mainstream songwriting. It still maintains its heart and vulnerability, but is the emotional depth lessened in exchange for cleaner sound and sing-along choruses? 🧵

A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar - 2003 With this album, Dashboard evolves from a solo acoustic project into a full band rock outfit. The sound grows bigger and bolder, yet Carrabba’s emotionally tangled lyrics, heartfelt vocals, and melodic charm remain firmly at the heart of the music. 🧵

The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most - 2001 Building on the raw emotion of the debut, this album sharpens Dashboard’s sound with stronger melodies & unforgettable moments paired with heartfelt lyrics. Several songs here would come to define the band and cement their place in early-2000s emo. 🧵

The Swiss Army Romance - 2000 Dashboard’s debut leans into lo-fi acoustic tones & pure emotional resonance. As the band name suggests, the songs feel like journal confessionals of love & heartbreak. Carrabba’s vulnerability & refined guitar work make it clear why he quickly rose to popularity. 🧵 🪡

Next Up: Dashboard Confessional. Chris Carrabba spent the late 90s moving between bands, even touring with New Found Glory before joining Further Seems Forever. In 2000 he launched his own project, Dashboard Confessional, which would soon become one of the defining voices of early-2000s emo.

The Paper Kingdom - Unreleased (2026) The band’s final recordings before their breakup. Though leaked in an unfinished state, the album highlights a darker, more subdued direction. With echoes of Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins, it feels exploratory and transitional rather than explosive.
