Coffee content has become my personal brand, a fate I'm willing to embrace.

A wonderfully silly coda to our 🇫🇷 road trip. Last time I watched these, aged 11 or so, the masks gave me nightmares, and that (and the cars) was about all I could remember. This time, I'm in a much better position to appreciate the leads' great performance (& everything else). Fantastique!

Colmar. Our Tour de France is coming to a close
A narrow street at dusk with a glowing ornate lantern mounted on a tall, shutter-windowed building, silhouetted figures walking in the distance under a pale sky.

A picturesque canal lined with half-timbered houses, outdoor café terraces with diners, and vibrant pink flowers in the foreground at twilight.

.A tranquil canal flanked by colourful half-timbered houses and a grand stone building, with a small bridge, a docked boat, and wildflowers in the foreground at dusk.

A Gothic stone church tower with a green spire rises above traditional half-timbered rooftops under a bright blue, cloud-streaked sky.

Yes, it's only a regional election in a small federal state, BUT that's 44 per cent of the vote going to one of the #AfD's most extreme chapters. Which, as a whole, is a party so extreme that it is beyond the pale even by Marine Le Pen's generous standards. In other news, I'm ordering a second round

Now that there is a real need, mainstream politicians are 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 reluctant to actually use the militant elements of the Basic Law. The tools exist. The willingness is what's missing. That's the fundamental paradox: one needs to overcome one's liberal squeamishness to defend liberal democracy

Kai Arzheimer @kai-arzheimer.com · 31/08/2026
Despite (or because of?) this strong constitution, Germany was not a very liberal democracy in the 1950s. But over time, a broad liberal-democratic consensus emerged that held sway over decades. Only recently, illiberal actors gained ground. And guess what ❓ ❔ ⁉️

The Grundgesetz rests on a strictly representative model. No plebiscitary elements, unlike Weimar. Instead, strong & stable (some might say: closed) institutions, combined with all sorts of protections for individual citizens and collective democracy. The most prominent "militant" tool: party bans

Everything is gendered in German (Politics), exhibit #3427 (from a truly exceptional PhD thesis that's still sitting on my desk)
Screenshot of a page from a PhD thesis. It reads:
'and the Social Democrats. Although gender-inclusive language is a politicised issue in German politics, with differing views on its suitability and purpose, the use of feminine forms in manifestos arguably indicates a party’s general political stance more than a specific policy priority. For example, when a right-leaning party uses the term Polizisten (policemen) and a left-leaning party uses Polizistinnen und Polizisten (policewomen and policemen), both are likely to be addressing issues related to domestic security or law and order. However, this difference in phrasing does not necessarily reflect a distinct topical emphasis, but rather different attitudes towards inclusion and language use. To avoid conflating the linguistic expression of political identity with the substantive policy'
