This is a photo of a book page: "[Demita Frazier:] ...that's how we got the name. Of course, this is all pre-Google. Everything's so much easier now. So much easier. But Barbara had come across in her reading information about Harriet Tubman leading the slave revolt that took place at the Combahee River.
So we evolved out of the National Black Feminist Organiza-tion, and, once we began meeting and talking, realized we were more radical, and we were wanting a different kind of structure.
And we wanted to have an economic analysis as well. We weren't willing to just have a discussion about, you know, sort of fitting into mainstream capitalist thinking.
One of things that really stood out was that we had an analysis that NBFO did not. We had an economic analysis. Because we were all either nascent or just fully blown out-and-about socialists.
And whether we were democratic socialists—whatever flavor you choose to apply to it—we were very clear that taking collective action was important, having an economic analysis was import-ant. Understanding-and by the way, some of us were second- or third-generation union babies. So we had mom and dads, or moms, who were in unions. And that was certainly true for me, and that left a lasting impression on me. Because my mother was a person who didn't even believe in voting, but she believed in the union.
Because that was on the ground. She could see what happened when she showed up, as opposed to dropping your vote in the void.
Where did the statement come from, and why?
[Demita Frazier:] How did we decide to even write the statement?
[Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor:] Yeah.
[Demita Frazier:] Well, if you remember, in the '60s and '70s, statement writing was..."

today's afternoon reading:
This is a photo of a book page: "[Keeanga-Yamatha Taylor:] So this is one of the questions I had as a follow-up, so it actually flows from what you were just discussing. And that is about identity politics. I think that you have really clarified sort of what Combahee meant by identity politics in response to the way that the right sort of abuses the term. That if you're not of a certain race, ethnicity, or gender, then that becomes an invitation to chastise or castigate you and sort of dismiss anyone who doesn't have any of those characteristics.

[Barbara Smith:] But however the right wing got ahold of identity politics and began using it as their whipping boy and their whipping girl, what we meant by identity politics when we originated the terminology was wholly different. What we were saying is that we have a right as people who are not just female, who are not solely Black, who are not just lesbians, who are not just working class, or workersthat we are people who embody all of these identities, and we have a right to build and define political theory and practice based upon that reality. That was all we were trying to say. That's what we meant by identity politics. We didn't mean that if you're not the same as us, you're nothing. We were not saying that we didn't care about anybody who wasn't exactly like us. One of the things I used to say, and of course I've had so many speaking engagements I have taglines at this point (laugh] of things that I've said more than once, is that it would be really boring only to do political work with people who are exactly like me."This is a photo of a book page: "[Barbara Smith:] That's what the right pretends that we mean by identity pol-itics, a very narrow version. And unfortunately because identity politics often have been first introduced to younger people by academics who have a partial understanding of what the depths of it would be, they are also confused about it too. Trigger warnings and safe spaces and microaggressions-those are all real, but the thing is, that's not what we were focused upon."

the second column "Server A" contains cells with the following various solutions for each technical requirement: "Nginx and Phusion Passenger," "Ruby on Rails," "Go," "Redis," "Redis and MongoDB," "Cron, Bash scripts, and Ruby," and "Upstart."

the third column "Server B" just says "Erlang" in every cell.

learned something new about the Deadwood movie from the latest @rangedtouch.bsky.social Just King Things bonusode: apparently Nic Pizzolatto helped David Milch pen the script! They'd worked together previously on True Detective season 3. www.indiewire.com/features/gen...
One of the more peculiar reports during the long development process of "True Detective" Season 3 was that David Milch had been brought in to help pen scripts. A TV legend who wrote on "Hill Street Blues" before creating "NYPD Blue" and "Deadwood," Milch hadn't written serialized television since HBO's ill-fated 2012 series "Luck."
So why did he come back now, and why this show?
It turns out that he was returning a favor.
During a press conference in Beverly Hills Monday evening, Nic Pizzolatto said producer Scott Stephens introduced the two creators so the "True Detective" scribe could help with the "Deadwood" movie."We had gotten together because Scott is a producer on 'Deadwood, and he had brought me in for a couple of weeks to sort of work for David on his 'Deadwood' film script," Pizzolatto told reporters gathered at the Four Seasons hotel. "This was around when I was still figuring out the idea for 'True Detective' 3, and we had such a great time."Milch is credited as a co-writer on the fourth episode of Season 3, "The Hour and the Day." He did not pen any other scripts, though his advice helped Pizzolatto craft a good chunk of the season."He turned me on to writing out loud, which I'd never done before, and I ended up writing most of the second half of the season out loud, which was a much more spiritually healthy thing to do than be alone in a room with a blank page," Pizzolatto said. "I knew he was going to have to go back and do 'Deadwood' and get that on its feet again, but I was just glad we had that time together. It's something I'm going to remember and take with me for the rest of my life."

'Oh yes,' replied Denholm grandly. 'You see, I've fucked most of them.'

wow I share many of these sentiments! the headphone jack, competitive matchmaking, and kyle gordon submissions are too long to screenshot (go read the article), but here are some other faves:
I despise the mother of Theosophy Helena Blavatsky. She created a racist brand of woo that both inspired the Nazis' weird spiritual/historical worldviews and, like, all new age religions. Anything you see about aryans, enlightened masters, or the Akashic Records is sourced from her, and it's all horrible bullshit.
--AmberEverything about generative Al, but especially the idea that we need to "teach students how to use it." (I am a college teacher.) We fucking don't.
1. They know how to use it.
2. It's not hard to use, goddamn it, you type in your homework problem and it spits out an answer that might be right or might be wrong. It's easier to use than a TI-84 and less reliable.
[I also hate] the fact that I used to be genuinely excited about technological possibilities and now I'm 100% pessimistic. I used a computer to do symbolic calculations as part of my PhD thesis, I used to give talks about the math behind Google PageRank, I have dreamed of self-driving cars since | got my drivers license! I think it's human nature to want technology to solve our problems, but right now all technology has been coopted by the oligarchs with the new goal of making them rich, damn the human costs.
--EmilyTechnology
Fuck the scam era. Fuck crypto. Fuck gambling apps. Fuck every grifter in the White House.
Fuck the DNC's infinite fundraising loops. Fuck Al with a rusty spoon and a cactus. I know l'Il suffer if the bubble popping sets off a global depression, but if all this bullshit gets swept away forever in the process of recovering from it, then I'II come out the other side feeling like it was worth it.
--ConnorI hate Liquid Death. That stupid fucking seltzer brand. Some douchebag took water, the source of all life, named it LIQUID DEATH, and gave it violent flavor names like
"mango chainsaw," all to cater to a certain type of man who believes drinking water is
gay.

Yup their dream is to "liberate capital from labour" without respecting the (eco)systems and people who made/make it possible: newsocialist.org.uk/transmission...
Text from the Gareth Watkins piece "AI: The New Aesthetics of Fascism" (https://newsocialist.org.uk/transmissions/ai-the-new-aesthetics-of-fascism/):

"AI is a cruel technology. It replaces workers, devours millions of gallons of water, vomits CO2 into the atmosphere, propagandises exclusively for the worst ideologies, and fills the world with more ugliness and stupidity. Cruelty is the central tenet of right wing ideology. It is at the heart of everything they do. They are now quite willing to lose money or their lives in order to make the world a crueller place, and Al is a part of this — a mad rush to make a machine god that will liberate capital from labour for good. (This is no exaggeration: there is a lineage from OpenAl's senior management back to the Lesswrong blog, originator of the concept of Roko's Basilisk.) Moreso even than cryptocurrency, AI is entirely nihilistic, with zero redeeming qualities. It is a blight upon the world, and it will take decades to clear up the mountains of slop it has generated in the past two or three years."

saving this to read in full later, but I'm sharing it now on Juneteenth to remind folks that slavery never truly ended in the US due to the wording of the Thirteenth Amendment:
And the U.S. has its own domestic influences, which are now shaping the evolution of ICE concentration camps here at home. The country's founding amid a genocide of Native Americans-along with its long history of chattel slavery-normalized detention and forced labor as a building block of the national economy and the nation itself. It also created a permanent hierarchy of political and economic power based on skin color.Even with reforms made during Reconstruction, the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution left
in place a terrible exception. This amendment lays out an end to slavery and forced labor, "except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted."
Though chattel slavery was ended, this language allowed the continuation of slave-like conditions post-emancipation for many people. (See the image near the top of this post for a prime example.) Systems of convict labor became a driver of racially targeted enforcement to create work gangs that could be leased out to private companies, generating profits for both the state and those companies. And today, prison and detainee labor is responsible for much of the cooking, cleaning, laundry, administrative and other work that occurs at detention facilities in the U.S. I'm not one of the people who thinks that the detention issues facing Americans all come from private detention companies, because even without private corporations, there are so many ways for the state or its representatives to benefit from forced labor.
And conditions in various kinds of government-run prison facilities are also heinous, though labor issues can play out differently in each.
