The summary usually doesn’t even fit into the preview spot. Who wants this? [2/2]

Setting the whole LLM thing aside, summarizing text messages is a bad feature. They’re already short! The summaries are just putting the message in the third person, adding italics and a bunch of icons, and often getting the meaning wrong. [1/2]

I was days away from moving all my passwords from 1Password to Apple Passwords, but the #macOS27 UI is so user-hostile that I think I need to pull the brakes and look into what it would take to move to Linux.

#macOS27 is the first Apple OS that makes me feel like I'm using Windows 11. I'm needing to try to outsmart an OS that's pushing features and products on me that I don't want. It's such a gross feeling.

#macOS27 is quite bad! AI summaries are everywhere, settings to turn them off are hidden and obfuscated, and in many cases don't actually turn them off. Basic things like dropping files into folders in the finder are less robust than before.

So, Settings search just... doesn't work at all in #macOS27 ? This happens on both my macbook and mac mini.
Sidebar for the settings app, showing a list of suggested search terms. One of them, take note, is "Displays".A search for "Displays" gives the result: No results for "Displays".

And... done. Scanning discs always takes longer than I think it will, but here they are! I need to do some QA on all the disc images - some CDs were in rough shape - then import all the new finds to coverdiscs.com. archive. [1/2]

I do wish there was a way to scan & archive the magazines themselves with normal-person / home-scale tools. They're really fun. [2/2]

Got my hands on a stack of MacFormat CDs from the 2000s to scan and upload to #internetarchive today. These are all discs that are missing from IA, or a few cases where there's a disc but no pictures. [1/2]

I’d be so happy to do so. Any way I can contribute, feel free to ask. GCP was way ahead of its time, and it got so many parts of the experience right. They did a really good job with it. It was an exemplar of the graphical power of 8 bit Atari computers. People ought to get to try it out.

There weren’t many of us! The hourly rate was prohibitive. My LoS guild would hold our monthly meetings at 5am to use off peak rates. Years ago I had a brief email correspondence with one of the two founders, and he acknowledged the pricing doomed GCP as a business. I wish now I’d saved that mail.

One more little new feature, probably the final one before I take a break for #VCFMW - in addition to reading text files off old Mac CDs, you can see a few types of image files. coverdiscs.com/disc/macaddict-issue…

Here's my plug: If you have a pile of old Macintosh magazine CDs and are going to #VCFMW2026 , drop me a note and let's get them scanned and archived. There are still way too many of these old discs at risk of being lost to time.

But more than that, these discs packed with software and random multimedia were fun to poke around in and explore back in the day, and I want to make it really easy to explore and experience them today. [2/2]

I've been able to add a bunch of features over the past few weeks - the file browser itself, finder icons for a bunch of file types, the ability to search for files across all the CDs, and now live contents for some files. This project is now starting to get close to my vision for it.

I’ve come across a bunch of old CD-ROMs that have these black rubber rings around the outer edge. I’ve never seen these before - is anyone familiar with them? They pull right off, and definitely aren’t compatible with a slot-loading drive. Whatever could they have been for?

BEWARE Vintage Computer buyers from outside US. Your stuff will be e-wasted! I bought an Epson PF-10 floppy drive from the US (I am in Canada) and as it travelled thru eBay Intl Shipping, it was "Liquidated" and I got a refund. Apparently a new US policy is the reason. kotaku.com/trumps-new-e...
This is tracking information informing me that my Epson PF-10 floppy drive "Did not pass Inspection" at the Ebay International Shipping hub and has been liquidated. Please see the news article link and pass this on so that at least some of this vintage computing equipment will not be e-wasted.

I have *some* folder icons displaying now in the Coverdiscs.com file browser. It's been a real learning experience to wrestle with parsing and making sense of HFS images, so I'd still consider this whole feature "extremely janky". coverdiscs.com/disc/macaddict-issue…

A fun lil feature I'm working on: showing the contents of a disc on its webpage. It's just on a few dozen discs while I'm ironing out the kinks. Even in very preliminary shape, it's neat to see this without going through the whole effort of loading up an emulator. [1/2]

A Coverdiscs.com contributor made a clever suggestion this morning: show the collection in calendar view, so you can browse the discs by the month they were released. I cobbled together a quick version, and it's pretty fun! coverdiscs.com/calendar

Hey #internetarchive fans, does anybody know of a way to find the DiscMaster URL (i.e. discmaster.textfiles.com/browse/319… ) for a particular internet archive identifier (i.e. archive.org/details/macworld-march-… )? Most ideal would be a way to do this programmatically. [1/2]

I'm going to change the existing RSS feed and the Mastodon bot at oldbytes.space/@classicmacdemos to point to this new site. At this point, 100% of the content from those two sources is coverdisc-related.

I've spun up a new site at coverdiscs.com and started migrating the collection of coverdisc images over there. It's a little clunky right now. I'm rewriting it from scratch, and it should be much easier to add functionality and extend it once I'm done.

I'm not done working with retro Macintosh cover discs, though. I have a backlog of literally hundreds of physical and digital discs that I want to archive and/or catalog. And I have big ambitions for features that would make the digital collection I've put together more useful for people.

I'm ready to consider classicmacdemos.com a completed project. And it was great. I learned Django, learned a ton about building and managing modern websites, and got to play a LOT of retro games. A lot of people in the community were generous with their time and wisdom to help me out.

I had a lot of fun building classicmacdemos.com . Looking back over the past 12 months, I've cataloged 454 CD cover discs and added 13 new demos to the website. It's safe to say that what I'm interested in right now is archiving and cataloging cover discs.

I wish there were a way to add to or edit the information on someone else's Internet Archive upload. It feels a little wasteful to create a whole duplicate item just because I have, for example, an image of a CD.

New batch of Macintosh magazine cover discs just landed! I’ll start digitizing and archiving these over the weekend. On first look, there are a good amount in here that I’ve never come across in digital form, so I’m excited to get these into Internet Archive.
