They were all bastard freezing - no central heating, no double glazing. Sash windows that rattled. In one place, God knows whose name was on the rent book - he'd long gone - landlord never knew our names. He was chilled about overdue rent too - he'd let it go up to 3 months, which was handy!

Don't get me started on private flats/HMOs. I had one where the basement had been flooded - and the mud hadn't been cleared out. It was so damp that an opened packet of biscuits would be soft by evening. However our electric bills were low - a knitting needle stopped the meter wheel going round!

The idea of students in halls sharing two to a room and using communal toilets and showers is medieval to today's youngsters. They want their single-occupancy, double-bed, en-suite rooms, an unimaginable (and no doubt wholly unaffordable) luxury for my generation.

Private equity will put the squeeze on politicians - their low cost models rely on a huge pool of immigrants working hard for little money - Deliveroo, Uber food and taxis, care homes, social care, cleaning companies etc. Farmers are already suffering. With a falling birth rate, it'll only get worse

It needs pointing out that he didn't fund it all himself - the Austrian American Council West, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Los Angeles contributed $9 million. But the point is that a celeb is using his wealth and influence to do "a good thing". We need much, much more of that.

It's all part of the plan - normalising racism, hatred and the inhuman treatment of fellow human beings. It emboldens the racists, inflames the ignorant and provokes appalling acts of violence. It's trite to compare Reform with Nazi Germany in the 1930s, but we've seen it before.

We already subscribe monthly but this outrage has prompted an additional donation. RNLI volunteers already receive additional protection from assault under the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act 2018 - this protection needs to be extended to address this kind of vile, cowardly harassment.
