Excellent posters at the symposium also. The PharmaCareers Project is presenting 'Careers in Place', sharing some of our initial findings on women science graduates, rural location and retention in Ireland's pharma industry.

Getting women into science was the question a generation ago. What happens at year ten is the question now. @pharmacareers.bsky.social at SETU is interviewing women science graduates who stayed in pharma, moved sideways or left. Fieldwork open. #WomenInSTEM #PharmaCareers

That matters because careers are rarely tidy sequences of individual choices. They unfold through organisations, opportunities, place, relationships and caring responsibilities. BNIM gives participants room to show us what mattered and where the story changed direction.

Follow-up questions come later, built from the participant’s own words and asked in the sequence in which she told her story. The aim is to reach particular moments and experiences—not answers shaped by our topic guide.

BNIM (the Biographic-Narrative Interpretive Method) begins with a SQUIN: a Single Question aimed at Inducing Narrative. The participant tells her story in her own way and without interruption.

1/ Most careers research asks people to explain their decisions. BNIM begins somewhere else: tell me the story, then listen. On @pharmacareers.bsky.social , we’re using it to study the career life-courses of women science graduates in Ireland’s pharmaceutical industry. 🎙️🧵

Research like this can actually shift how organisations think about retention and career development. If we can show what's working and what's not, we can make real change.

The workshop was drawn to a close by excellent insights on writing feminist research and getting published, followed by a roundtable Q&A from Dr. Alexia Panayiotou, Professor Alison Pullen, Dr. Lynne Baxter, and Dr. Ana Lopes. 7/7

Creative writing techniques were modelled, and their practical applications as researchers were explored. Our 'found objects' were used to frame our thoughts about who we are as researchers and what our research means to us. 6/7

A unique approach to this collective reading was the opportunity to choose a (non-consecutive) passage and explain why it was of interest. 4/7
