Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 13/08/2026p.s. I see you recommended Zero in the post - they also use server-authoritative reconciliation which basically gives LWW, they're just less explicit about it in their docs. with zero, mutations are applied to the source db in the order received 111
Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 13/08/2026this is from over a decade of experience deploying synced apps at scale (including at fortune 500s) still, I've started updating our docs since we literally don't have any defaults, especially not LWW, so really appreciate the interaction 100
Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 13/08/2026back. i read the footnote. respectfully disagree. while LWW doesn't have the nice mathematical properties of something like CRDTs, the implementation is vastly simpler for the customer. add things like db-level constraints & an audit trail and you avoid most of the issues often associated with LWW 100
Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 12/08/2026thanks for the feedback. was hoping the note on customization would help to make it clear that LWW is just what you get with a naive backend mutator implementation, but perhaps we should replace that with "server-authoritative reconciliation" 110
Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 12/08/2026Just found out about your post from TMIR. "Systems that manage state — rather than merely propagating or filtering it — have built-in concepts of time and order, and this allows them to handle both offline state and online real-time collaboration naturally." 👏 Have you checked out PowerSync btw? 100

Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 14/07/2026As a sponsor, but definitely not big tech, I have questions. For example: do you think an open source sync server that passes messages between clients satisfies ideals 5 and 7? We have some PowerSync people in Berlin atm that would love to argue about this over a coffee or an eisbein :) 000
Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 16/06/2026hmmm yeah that is one to keep an eye on, it has been one hell of a run 110
Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 15/06/2026ah yeah. probably the thread i'm pulling on is that by aiming for the ideals you end up with a better cache. to continue with my spotify example - they have a cache. but because they don't aim for the ideals, it is brittle. i still like to believe we can have the best of both worlds, but we'll see 110
Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 15/06/2026ah kk re: `i myself don’t care about owning my data, etc.` and `improving ux` there is a bit of an intersection here, where caring about owning data provides a better ux. e.g. last time I flew to berlin, spotify wouldn't work on the plane even though I had downloaded content 110

Kobie @k081e.bsky.social · 20/10/2025A low-hanging fruit use case for offline-first is notes - I might be unable to access the cloud, but my offline-first note taking app (@noteplan.bsky.social) still works and I can be somewhat productive & collaboration is optional. On the opposite end of the spectrum is something like Door Dash. 020
