There is a family of robins taking turns bathing in a crook of the stream where the water runs slow. Somewhere far above, a Cessna or its cousin drones invisibly across the perfect blue sky. The scent of fallen leaves fills my nose as a chill breeze rustles more down from the trees to join them […]

Sitting in the woods watching leaves fall and listening to the sound of a nearby stream, I am reminded of how much of a miracle it is that we are all alive, here, now, together. And that fact is no less of a miracle if you attribute it to random chance and the incredible age of the universe […]

It’s kind of a relief to see everyone else starting to see the cracks in Gruber’s facade. I would love to see him turn away from his current path, which seems likely to lead to self-isolation and has the potential for a really unpleasant heel-turn arc. 🙃

While I’m at it, there also oughtta be a law that replying to unsolicited texts with "fuck off" has the same effect as replying "end" or "stop". Just viscerally more satisfying.

There oughtta be a law about sending unsolicited promotional emails to the clients of the therapists associated with your practice. There especially oughtta be a law about emails with the title, "Layoff anxiety can show up even when your job is secure" […] [Original post on wandering.shop]
A screenshot from an unsolicited promotional email I received after signing up for my therapist’s practice’s online portal to view PDFs the therapist shared with me. It includes a photo of a clearly distraught man sitting at a kitchen table with his face in his hands, and a title and brief description of an article purporting to be "How to Cope With Layoff Anxiety", a concern I did not have before I received the email.

There’s all this concern about misaligned AI but very little concern about misaligned people. For example, imagine producing the kind of child who wants to be a tech CEO.

Sometimes I feel guilty for rarely running proper dungeons for my D&D players, and then we do yet another session that is basically all one encounter and I remember that actually it’s probably for the best.

My D&D group is getting together today for the first time in… maybe two months?… and I’m currently planning how to drop the players right back into some action to get things going, because we had just ended a big encounter with a nice rest. Currently I’m thinking they get blasted from a jungle […]

I’m torn on the Magician’s Nephew trailer. On the one hand, it looks like it could be a very fun movie. On the other, it looks like it will absolutely annihilate some of my earliest visual imaginings, and I’m not enthusiastic about letting those go.

And because I’m very tired today, all I have for #inktober2026 today is a nerdy minimalist visual pun. Panic. #Inktober
A laptop or table sits on a surface of some kind. It’s showing a blue screen with ": (", indicating a Windows kernel panic. Nearby, a stick figure stands with its stick hands raised to where its mouth should be in panic at losing its work.

Day 5 of #inktober2026: Smack. #Inktober
A wooden hexagon, on which has been drawn poorly a stick figure clearly smashed by the hand of a giant hundreds of times larger. The kindest thing that can be said about the piece is that the handprint and the stick figure surrounded by short lines within it look vaguely Haring-esque.

Day 4 of #inktober2026: Cactus. #Inktober
A wooden hexagon, on which is rendered a scene of sparse desert vegetation in the foreground, with several cacti silhouetted in black against a distant range of purplish mountains and a vari-colored sunset in yellow, orange, pink, and purple. At the very top, a dark purple sky with something approximating six stars of the big dipper is visible.

Belated Day 3 of #inktober2026, rendered—albeit unintentionally—in the style of Cecilia Giménez. Miniature. #Inktober
It’s a very poor attempt at a rendering of a classic blue LEGO Space minifig. His expression, such as it is, transmits a real ambivalence about his very existence.

Good morning to all, but most especially to this pair of northern flickers doing a courtship dance in my neighbor’s tree, and the mockingbird who came over to see what all the fuss was about. #Pittsbirds #backyardbirding #birds #birdsofmastodon
Two roughly American-robin-sized northern flickers sit in a tree, partially obscured by twigs. They both have brown-and-black striped backs, black-spotted undersides, black bibs, buff faces, and red caps.A ruffled northern mockingbird sits on a branch to the left of one of the northern flickers from the previous shot. It seems very intent about something, while the flicker seems mostly unconcerned.

Day 2 of #inktober2026: Near miss on the sizes of the screen and the scroll wheel, and I’m not sure what happened with the weird texture areas at right and bottom-right. 😅 Also, did you know acrylic markers bleed on wood and the combination is not suitable […] [Original post on wandering.shop]
A photograph of an unfinished light-colored wooden hexagon with a silver iPod Classic poorly rendered using acrylic marker. The border around the screen is too large, the click-wheel is too small and also very lopsided, and the markers have bled in a number of places. However, the iPod user interface is more or less recognizable, and the right side of the screen is a reasonable lo-fi rendering of the mostly-blue cover of an album the poster’s name may make you think of.
