It’s maybe a minor thing, but I hate how all these stories leave out the man’s name: Doris Miller. He’s just “black war hero”. Say his name!
A Bluesky post about a cnn headline discussing the WW2 Navy hero Doris Miller but choosing not to name him, referring to him only as “a Black sailor hailed for his heroic actions” and “Black war hero”

Is it me or is it the alpaca?
A sign on a table that says “Please be gentle with me I am unstable”. There is a fuzzy leg of a take alpaca that can be seen rising from behind the sign, but there’s no context to know that. There’s a brick wall in the background.

A painting of John “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman by an unknown artist. Or it might be Apple’s new CEO John Ternus, not really sure. In any event, it’s a guy with a pot on his head, a chipmunk on his shoulder, a dancing bee on a nearby branch. The guy is reaching for an apple. He looks really happy, and why shouldn’t he be?

Maybe he’s been reading comic books instead of the PDB
The front of a comic, “ORDAINED #1”, showing a Catholic priest with gritted teeth, blood dripping down his face, and scraped fists raised and ready to fight. The image of the priest’s face is off above the nose, focusing the image on the gritted teeth, priest collar, and raised fists, all against a blood-red background. The cover of ORDAINED #2 showing the back of a priest in black with bloodied fists and holding a bloody gun in his right hand. He is framed in a multi-color stained window rosette with clear panels that suggest wings above the shoulders of the priest. He is facing a grey mob of angry and disheveled men in suits holding pipes, bats and swords. It appears prelude to a Holy Ass Kicking.

Isn’t though? Doctrinal issue well out of my expertise, so I’ll take it on faith, so to speak.
A dispenser of holy water with a bottle that says “Holy Water” and a small silver basin on a small marble table. Taped to the table is a sign that says “Holy Water… NOT SANITIZER” along with a photo of a bad dipping in a golden dish. In the background, partially obscured, is a song exhorting people not to touch the statue of John the Baptist. So I guess that’s a problem too.

Beer Advent Calendar Day 25: Out Most Popular Holiday Beer from Evil Twin Brewing! A Belgian-style ale that pours dark but not too heavy. It’s cinnamon and nutmeg here; unexpected and interesting! Rich but not overwhelming with the cinnamon balanced with warm vanilla notes. Try it! Happy holidays!
At long last, Beer Advent Calendar Day 25: Out Most Popular Holiday Beer from Evil Twin Brewing! A fine way to end the holidays, this is a Belgian-style ale that pours dark but not too heavy. Unlike a lot of holiday beers, it’s not anise and spice, but cinnamon and nutmeg here. Unexpected and interesting! Rich but not overwhelming with the cinnamon balanced with warm vanilla notes. I liked it more than I thought I would like a beer with cinnamon. So try it if you see it! Happy holidays!

Beer Advent Calendar Day 24: The Cat Who Stole Christmas from CT’s Fat Orange Cat Brewing! A sour ale made with kiwi, guava, pineapple. It’s got a medium smooth body and finishes with a bit of acidity with the lime and sour. An interesting spectacle and if you like tropical sours it’s not bad!
Beer Advent Calendar Day 24: The Cat Who Stole Christmas from CT’s Fat Orange Cat Brewing! A sour ale that’s a startling shade of green. Made with kiwi, guava, pineapple, and lime the sourness is pretty mild, and there is an explosion of fruit flavors. It’s got a medium smooth body and finishes with a bit of acidity with the lime and sour. Not a very beery beer, it’s closer to a fruity drink or even a framboise imo, but it goes down pretty easy at a sweet 5%. Beer Advent Calendar Day 23: Ambrosia: Walking Into the Fog! From Abomination Brewing a DDH, double IPA. It’s juicy, creamy and extremely sweet with lots of fruit, and the coconut in the finish. It’s 9.1% ABV, but that’s well-masked by all the sugary sweetness. Interesting, but not my thing.
Beer Advent Calendar Day 23: Ambrosia: Walking Into the Fog! From Abomination Brewing (in CT, not the PA one), this is a DDH, double IPA. Part of an extended “Into the Fog” series, this isn’t just hazy, but murky, with a deep orange color and bits of… bits in the fog. It’s juicy, creamy and extremely sweet. As it says, it’s got lots of fruit and the coconut come through in the finish. It’s 9.1% ABV, but that’s well-masked by all the sugary sweetness. It’s all very intentional and maybe an excercise in seeing how far a thing can go. Interesting, but not my thing. Might be yours, tho. I mean, one can’t be afraid to wander into the fog.

Beer Advent Calendar Day 21: Big Bad Baptist: The Godfather from UT’s Epic Brewing! This barrel-aged imperial stout is a whopping 15.2%, but for all that it was not overpowering. It’s got the roasted bitter flavors, but I thought quite sweet with chocolate flavors. A very approachable imperial!
Beer Advent Calendar Day 21: Big Bad Baptist: The Godfather from UT’s Epic Brewing! This imperial stout is part of a barrel-aged series and variants the brewery releases each year. This 2025 take is a whopping 15.2%, but for all that it was not overpowering. It’s got the roasted bitter flavors, but I thought it was not heavy and quite sweet with chocolate flavors (maybe they added sugar to offset the alcohol). In any event I thought it was a very approachable imperial, flavorful but not too much. Worth a try if you find it!

Beer Advent Calendar Day 20: Even More Xmas from Evil Twin Brewing! This imperial stout pours dark and beautiful with medium body. With coffee, dark chocolate, and toasty malt flavors, each sip reveals more flavors. It’s a hefty but balanced 12% ABV in this complex and tasty beer. Well done!

Beer Advent Canendar Day 19: Oberon Eclipse Rasberry Wheat from Bell’s Brewery! A fruit take on their flagship wheat beer. Strong rasberry flavor, but not overly sweet in my opinion. An easy drinking 5.8%, it’s a bit thin, but balanced for what it is. One to try if you like fruit-based beers!

Beer Advent Calendar Day 12: Bell’s Big Hearted IPA! Part of Bell’s Two Hearted family, this imperial is a solid 9.5%. Citrusy and piney mostly (as you’d expect) with a bit of sweetness that offsets the alcohol presence. Not bold in the flavor profile, but very drinkable for a high-alcohol beer.
Beer Advent Calendar Day 12: Bell’s Big Hearted IPA! A now permanent part of Bell’s Two Hearted family of beers, this imperial is indeed fairly big at 9.5%. Beer Advent Calendar Day 8: Ferndale Project Summer Blues! A double NE-style IPA from Detroit’s Eastern Market Brewery Co. Hazy and made with Galaxy and Mosaic hops. 8% and fairly fruity and the brewery tells us it passion fruit and blueberry. Not really my thing, but that’s more me than the beer.
Beer Advent Calendar Day 8: Ferndale Project Summer Blues! A double NE-style IPA from Detroit’s Eastern Market Brewery Co. Hazy typical of the style and made with Galaxy and Mosaic hops. While a double at 8% I don’t think the alcohol was too overt though I thought it was noticeable. It’s fairly fruity and the brewery tells us it passion fruit and blueberry. Not really my thing, but that’s more a function of my taste of not digging the fruit and not a fan of Galaxy hops rather than any fault of the beer. Never hurts to try something new though!

Beer Advent Calendar Day 7: Old Nation’s Flat Brain Red IPA! A malty IPA counter balanced with citra hops. A lovely deep red, rich and tasty at 7.2% with a nice finish. The key here (imo) is how superbly they execute that balance between the malt and the hops. Really well done!
Beer Advent Calendar Day 7: Old Nation’s Flat Brain Red IPA! A Michigan brewery maybe most famous for it’s excellent New England hazy IPA, this is another great reason to check out this brewery. It’s a malty IPA counter balanced with citra hops. I’ve found some red ipa’s to be on the sharp side, but this is a lovely deep red, rich and tasty at 7.2% with a nice finish. The key here (imo) is how superbly they execute that balance between the malt and the hops. Really well done! “Named after an iconic rant on the hypnotic stupidity of chickens, Flat Brain is anything it dim. A rich malt body delivers caramel and toffee, while bright citra hops burst with mango, grapefruit, and lychee. Smooth and complex with a crisp finish, it’s a bold tropical-leaning brew that rewards focus- and maybe even invites a little hypnosis”
