Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I’ll always treasure the moment when my son asked me, “why is he singing like that?” 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 06/09/2026It’s probably because the team mother just finished dyeing them last night. 000
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 06/09/2026I was blessed to see it on opening day, first show with a theater full of Star Trek maniacs. It was one of the best movie-going experiences of my life. 020
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 05/09/2026I think you should root for Hull on the strength of their kits alone. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 21/08/2026To this day my son and I will say to each other, apropos of nothing, “my name on a car.” 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 20/08/2026Riding Giants, the documentary about big wave surfers. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen it, and I’ve never surfed in my life. 000
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 23/07/2026Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry and Stephen King’s It are my two “go-tos” for really long books. 110
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 21/07/2026I’ll admit it’s hard to get fired up for games with the ACC teams. We’re supposed to have had a great recruiting season, but I’d rather be playing the teams from the west coast. 110
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 21/07/2026No, unfortunately. I graduated in ‘82 and wasn’t able to make the game that fall. But I was listening to Joe Starkey’s immortal call. I was at every Big Game in Berkeley from 1986 through 2022 with a friend who is a Stanford fan, but he’s in his 80s now and it’s quite a hike up to the stadium. 110
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 30/06/2026I was lucky enough to attend the Super Bowl that was held there and had to constantly remind myself to watch the action on the field. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 27/06/2026The restaurant where I was a waiter 1983-86 had live acoustic music in the bar on Fridays and Saturdays. One of the groups who played was a duo who did an a cappella version of the song, and when they performed it you could hear a pin drop - no matter how many drinks people had enjoyed. 120
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 23/06/2026I read a LOT of music criticism and I never heard of the guy. 000
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 09/06/2026I think a lot of people waited until the last couple of days and cast a strategic vote for Steyer. It should be a nail-biter. 000
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 26/05/2026I don’t know that you can beat Dionne singing Bacharach/David songs with sublime arrangements and production. Right up there with the best. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 24/05/2026The Dylan covers albums by Bettye Lavette, Maria Muldaur, and Chrissie Hynde are all great. Cat Power recreating the 1966 Royal Albert Hall set is amazing. But it I had to pick one song, it would be Rod Stewart’s version of “Tomorrow Is A Long Time.” 060
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 21/05/2026Introduce yourself with 10 bands you’ve seen live Bruce Springsteen Drive-By Truckers The B-52s The English Beat Talking Heads The Cars Rosanne Cash Cheap Trick R.E.M. Blue Oyster Cult 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 08/05/2026I have four of them and even that is probably two too many. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 06/04/2026By the last mission (Apollo 17 in December 1972; I was in sixth grade) they had faded a bit from public view, but the first few Apollo missions (including 13) were huge events and the top news story nearly every night. 000
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 01/04/2026Callison’s. $1.50 for a drink, $2.00 for a double, $2.50 for a triple. A staple of my days as a waiter, 1983-87. 020
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 24/03/2026On the bright side, it was the featured review (with a “best new album” designation) on Pitchfork this morning. 110
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 16/03/2026I probably shouldn’t share this but we’re going to be in the high 80s in Sacramento this week. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 16/03/2026I dunno the answer to that, but in 1976 the NCAA Final and the Oscars were on the same night. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 04/03/2026Check out “My Woman” by Lew Stone and the Monseigneur Band, from a 1932-34 compilation. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 04/03/2026I was shocked when I found out a couple of years ago that the hook is based on a song that came out in the early 1930s. 100
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 02/03/2026To their credit, NBC cut away as soon as he veered to interior decorating and ballroom design. 120
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 27/02/2026In the Seventies, my family would spend a week at South Lake Tahoe and my aunts would take my brothers and I to the dinner show at Harrah’s. I think it was in 1978 that we saw Sedaka. It was a great show. Listening to Sedaka’s Back now. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 26/02/2026The first thing that comes to mind is Everybody Hurts. 090
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 16/02/2026That Side One is as good as any album side released in the 80s is one of my “hill to die on” arguments. 010
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 12/02/2026 And Diner (1982). I think that fits the definition. 000
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 12/02/2026The Stunt Man (1980). For a long time that resulted in “what?” more often than not but it usually gets a good reaction now. 100
Jeff Vaca @jvcalbear.bsky.social · 09/02/2026So if “discount double check” is any indication, we have only 9 years to go. 000
