Tl;dr LoM is cool and you should totally read it. I found it on archive.org but you can also buy the 'official translation' from amazon (warning the official splits up the books into more of a manga style serialized set of books increasing the cost of buying quite a lot.)

Book 2 does a massive feat of world building and really establishes a lot of the mechanics as well as what the author DOESN'T want to do in subsequent books quite well. Without it, book 3 and 4 in particular would just be less cool in many ways.

I'm giving book 2 a lot of flack here but not only is is better than book 1, it does a lot and despite the length delivers a fairly solid narrative and really fleshes out the world build in a way subsequent books don't achieve as handily. This means 3 and 4 are shorter, more focused, but expand less

Over all I'd absolutely STILL recommend LoM as a Potter replacement, as good Victorian fantasy, and just over all a good intriguing mysterious world full of weird fantastical stuff. I'm 4 books in and the quality has only increased not decreased. Book 1 and 2 are a bit rough but still serviceable

I think in a way the setting helps paper over the authors relative ineptness at lgbtq+ issues, but he's still trying to be empathetic about it. 'It's rude to mock someone for their gender' is literally a line he writes. It's not a big focus. And it's very clear the author levels up book to book.

The writing is pretty easy to read and YA feeling, but at the same time like any good YA writing confronts difficult adult topics and the author (especially in book 2) takes the historical inspiration of his setting very seriously. A lot of stuff back in Victorian England translate to today.

It's written by a cis-straight dude, yeah, and it shows, but I think he does eventually find a way to bring up the lgbtq+ implications of 'potion turns you into a woman' way better than polyjuice could ever hope for. I hear the good plot line for this isn't until book 5ish or so tho...

I swear I'll read normal ass books at some point so I can actually recommend people read them. Idk I'm hard stuck in my light novel era rn. Still a better victorian magic is hidden from normies setting than Potterverse tho. Light years ahead on basically every metric.

Finished Book 4 of Lord of Mysteries. Guys, you have to read this freakin thing. Best twist ending and finale I've read in a damn long time. Look I know book 2 is just too damn long, but I promise you the author wrote 2 books in book two. He behaves and only writes one book per book after that.

It's really not the same though. There was definitely a point where you could have respectful debate in mature communities with strong moderators. But I think most good moderators got burnt out, bots got too prolific, and subsequently civility and standards of decorum lowered. Sucks.

Them being in leadership positions kinda steered the mostly white org in a healthy direction but not every school has that luxury and not every environment should rely on black leadership to foster a good environment. I think another factor in this is a lot of this happens in the context of school and college in particular. The environment is inherently structured towards classism and white privilege. I think I'd have had a radically different experience if the academic head of our schools queer org wasn't black.

I see people posting top 9 lists of anime. To me this is a foolish endeavor without genre definition. What makes an all around good anime does not make a best in genre. Too many anime to truly put in a top 10 objectively. So it becomes 'what developed me/my taste in anime'.

I mean yes and no. Having 'a sane world from our childhood' to compare to makes the weight and aberrations of the current hellscape hit way harder. The ladder was pulled up during Regan era. 90's gen and up are poorer, less safe, and generally have less prospects just the same. Pluses and minuses.
