Haha! Stupid Any Rand wrote these dull books about her banal and profoundly wicked personal philosophy! I shall interview her on my television show / for my magazine / for my newspaper column and expose her shallowmindedness before my intelligent audience!

Mental health services? I'm sorry, but in what world does responding to unacceptable conditions with unacceptance call for mental health services? This sailor needs an escape route, not mere counseling.

Yard sign in front of a house:
"In this house, we believe:
Sredni Vashtar went forth
His thoughts were red thoughts
And his teeth were white
His enemies called for peace
But he brought them death
Sredni Vashtar the beautiful"

Sure, happy to. Attached are the relevant passages from resolutions 25 and 32, cropped and stitched. Here's a link to the current party platform: democrats.org/wp-content/u... (my bad, in my previous reply I went by the pdf page numbers rather than the printed page numbers. Check 56-7.)
Excerpts from the resolutions directly relevant to LGBT+ rights

Today was a big win. The DNC unanimously adopted an amendment calling for the abolition of ICE into their party platform.
"BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the DNC urges Democratic members of Congress to craft
legislation abolishing ICE and enacting immigration reform that provides pathways to
citizenship, protects workers, and ensures dignity for all impacted people;"

25 and 32 each list the protection of LGBT+ rights as a premise, and 32 also lists it as part of the resolution. But these are mid-cycle proposed amendments to the platform. The primary commitment is already in the current platform, pages 57-8.

Although part of my job is explaining how to use standard English conventions effectively, I always make room for historical objections and nuances. I particularly like reinforcing the idea that if you're going to champion prescriptivist rules, you'd best be prepared for a helping of humble pie.

American mainstream media deliberately sucks at keeping Americans informed of international news, though, no argument there, and consistently reinforces the illusion of explanatory depth to make Americans think they should have one of a binary of opinions on any issue. Absolute trash.

Iran was growing closer every passing year to a genuine civil war and regime change, but fortunately for its autocratic leaders and terroristic partners abroad, a bunch of foreigners came in guns blazing and made them look legitimate by comparison.

For my flavor of lefty, it'll always be appalling that a school was destroyed. A small but important part of the reason is that it obscures the fact that the school itself was a tool of brutal oppression. Murdering kids with AI targeting and dated maps is how you entrench regimes, not win hearts.

I can't speak for the American left you mean, but the one I was raised in has always told me that the Iranian regime is a brutal, corrupt right-wing theocracy—and that it gained power and consolidated support as a reaction to the CIA-planted, brutal, corrupt right-wing dictatorship that preceded it.

I think the spinning jenny and the internet and even, briefly, VR (long-anticipated technologies with sudden payoffs) caused the same reaction among the ultra-wealthy, but the big difference this time is that the credulous rich of ages past were not so publicly forthcoming with their horseshit.

I think I see what you mean, but that resolution still seems a sequence to me; it's like a snowball gathering plot threads as it rolls downhill from the moment Bertie escapes the yacht to his contented sigh over breakfast. For a single move sweep, I'd propose Right Ho, Jeeves and the bicycle trip.

SCOTUS justices have been political actors from the start (e.g. Chief Justice Rutledge's speech against the Jay Treaty). Reagan certainly emboldened them, but the excesses we're seeing now are a return to form after FDR managed to temporarily get them in line with his court packing plan.

"Evidence for and against banning mobile phones in schools: A scoping review" (Campbell et al., 2024) journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/... Tldr: there have been no robust studies on the effects of cell phone bans, and bans are usually abandoned within a couple of years.
Furthermore, a consequence of any decision to ban mobiles in schools is that the responsibility for learning digital literacy is left to families, many of whom feel ill-equipped to help their child become digitally literate (Strider et al., 2012). Nonetheless, the banning of mobile phones in schools appears to be gathering momentum despite historically these decisions being reversed a few years later. What is driving the renewed interest in educational mobile phone policies?
The impetus for phone policy changes at school are often championed by politicians responding to community concerns (Selwyn & Aagaard, 2021). Community concerns are amplified by the media, creating moral panics about issues for which little-to-no evidence exists – and to which banning then becomes a seemingly necessary and politically popular response (Orlando, 2019; Selwyn & Aagaard, 2021).
