Coincidentally, my son asked about this knife earlier today. I had these made for the Site Isolation Team, for accelerating the launch due to Spectre/Meltdown. I do kinda miss sandboxing, though. It's security engineering that just really clicked with me, which is probably why I did it for so long.

Eve's packaging also bugs me. Take smart plugs: The Eve box is 6x the volume of IKEA's. It's the wasteful legacy of the luxury packaging craze that Apple popularized. Relatedly, at 5x the price of IKEA, Eve does have some nice extra features. But IKEA can add all of that in future software updates.
Boxes for an Eve Energy matter over-thread smart plug next to an IKEA Grillplats matter-over-thread smart plug. The Eve box is clearly much larger than the IKEA box, even though the devices pictured on the front are clearly comparable in size.

It's wild that it even makes sense to do this. We're using a modern, high-density battery chemistry plus a tiny battery-brain to emulate a weird quirk of a century old chemistry and cell combination that's been a de facto standard for 60+ years. It works. I'm buying them. But it's crazy.

Hey, whatever gets the job done. 😉 I was just trying to answer the question about managing the wires. The few times I soldered a breadboard I used the style in this pic (note the bus lines on the bottom side). It worked well enough to connect multiple modules without a tangle of jumpers.

According to the letters I keep getting for the Anthropic copyright settlement negotiations, TAoSSA was included in their training set. We clearly gave them the tools of our demise while also antagonizing them with our wit. I publicly apologize to our future robot masters for this gross insult.

We were at Old Navy a few weeks ago getting fall clothes for the kids and I came across a Misfits t-shirt for $8. I was never a big fan—at that age my tastes ranged more between DRI, Jane's Addiction, and Suicidal Tendencies. But I felt ironically compelled to buy the $8 Old Navy Misfits t-shirt.

A "science journalist" and "fact checker" claimed that "most Americans have never met a Jew." I pointed out how wildly false this assertion was and got blocked (along with seemingly anyone else who noted the error). Just a reminder that there's a whole lot of misinformation out there.
Erin Biba (@erinbiba.bsky.social) posted:
I am always trying to explain to folks that most Americans have never met a Jew and people do not believe me and I just need you to understand that the perception that we are a powerful group in this country is intentionally created by antisemites and you’re unknowingly buying in.

Forget red. Now it's all purple for us.
A map showing Chicago and some of the surrounding area overlayed with air quality readings and a banner that reads "Smoke Outlook Issued For This Area." Three quarters of the readings are purple, indicating very unhealthy air quality. The remainder of the readings are almost entirely red, indicating unhealthy air quality, concentrated in the southwest quadrant of the map.

So much for orange. It's a red to purple day.
A map showing Chicago and some of the surrounding area overlayed with air quality readings. The top quarter of the map covers the northern suburbs of Chicago, with mostly purple readings indicating very unhealthy air quality. The upper middle quarter covers the north half of Chicago, with a mix of red and purple readings, indicating unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality. The bottom middle quarter covers the south half of Chicago with a mix of red, orange, and yellow readings, indicating moderate to unhealthy air quality. The bottom quarter covers the south suburbs with a mix of orange and yellow readings, indicating the air quality is moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Seriously, Chicago's air quality sensor network is impressive... and by tomorrow I expect this all to be orange at best.
A map showing Chicago and some of the surrounding area overlayed with air quality readings that are overwhelmingly yellow, indicating moderate air quality. A dense grid of hundreds of readings covers the city of Chicago, while the rest of the surrounding area (about three times the land of Chicago) has about a dozen readings total, with a seemingly random distribution.

The kids' track camp got postponed for the week due to the heatwave, but it looks like the air quality would have ended it anyway. On the plus side, Chicago does have the densest air quality sensor network in the world (~1.2 sensors per square mile), so we at least know exactly how bad it is.

About two thirds of the meds I'd been prescribed are now getting thrown away, because I don't need them anymore. The majority of this was just for the last week of post-op, and before that I was regularly declining notifications from the pharmacy that I was due for refills. It all seems so wasteful.

At Trump's one year mark foreign markets are massively outperforming the US. After adjusting for inflation and the weak dollar, a US whole market index returned a measly 5% over the last year, while a non-US whole market index returned an adjusted 22%. Not a sign of confidence in the US.

Picked this up at Neighborly, a cozy little home goods store down the street. It's a good example of how strongly the city has unified against the ICE/CBP occupation. I can't walk down the street without seeing "HANDS OFF" signs (or more colorful language) in the windows of houses and businesses.

BEWARE: ICE AGENTS

3. Do Not Run or Resist. 4. Ask "Am I free to leave?"
5. Do not show false documents. 6. Understand anything you sign.

Took the kids to the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture in Humboldt Park and had to share a pic of this bad ass piece.
The sculpture "Fragmentados" from 2015 by Enrique Ortiz Matos. It hangs on a white wall and depicts a forearm waving a tattered Puerto Rican flag. The arm is made of aged, twisted copper and almost skeletal in appearance. The flagpole and a few rope-like tendrils are made of the same copper, while the flag itself is composed of many wavy shards of glass matching the colors of the standard flag.

Still seems concerning that we're nine months into Trump's term and the US market has been basically negative in real terms (ie. adjusted for inflation and the US dollar).
Graph showing that the US market has been down almost the entire time since Trump took office (after adjusting for inflation and the dollar value). The adjusted value of the market rapidly declined from January, bottoming out at -25% in April. It's been slowly recovering, and was briefly positive for the last two weeks, before going slightly negative again on April 7th.

The graph uses the VTSAX index to track the US market; the adjustments are made using NYICDX for the dollar and CPI-U for inflation.

Between that, a careful choice of fonts, and slowing down the text perimeters, I got legible text all the way down to 3mm tall (ie. the ICIRR hotline and phone number). That and the flag on the bottom came in at only six color changes. Anyway, I'll clean up and post the files today or tomorrow.

And the current code went with checking for a range from -1 to -12, landed by @quidity.bsky.social back in April. There's also a nice comment about how they got to -12. source.chromium.org/chromium/chr...
Source code comment with the following text:

Note that there appears to be no official documentation covering the existence of specific pseudo handle values. In practice it's clear that e.g. -1 is the current process, -2 is the current thread, etc. The largest negative value known to be an issue with DuplicateHandle in fuzzers is -12.

Note that there is virtually no risk of a real handle value falling within this range and being misclassified as a pseudo handle.

Honestly, you erase almost all the gains in the US market just by accounting for how much the dollar has weakened since inauguration day. (The dollar adjusted value is the black line in the graph.)

I don't get the narrative that the US market is performing well. It recovered from the April low, but is overall middling―practically zero after accounting for a weak dollar and elevated inflation. And that's all before feeling the effects of tariffs, layoffs, benefit cuts, the shutdown, etc.
Graph showing the following movement in the overall US (VTSAX) and non-US (VTIAX) markets since inauguration day, along with the performance of the US Dollar (NYICDX) versus other currencies.
