Away for my annual #walking weekend with my sister. This year we're headed to Aviemore. Today we travelled up via The Hermitage at Dunkeld then spent an afternoon at RSPB Loch Garten. Shrooms, big trees, big views and a butterfly that hitched a ride with me 😍 #naturetherapy

This #WorldAlzheimersDay let's hope for a cure to #dementia but let's also remember those living with advanced dementia - the often forgotten. They remain with us, they're never 'too far gone' to feel. I was reminded of this when I saw a lady smile & giggle today, no words needed

Speaking with a lady about her life, much of it lived some distance away from where she now lives in the #carehome. I asked if she missed the island, she replied that she's still there, not in the same way, but there nonetheless. #Dementia can mean being in two places at once.

Pace - it matters! It's not a race! People living in a #carehome need us to support them at their pace. Give time to listen to what the person needs. Give time to let the person carry out tasks themselves - their own way. Less distress, maybe a little mess - empowering people.

She didn't know her friend was dead. She could feel the void, the lack of something important. She couldn't voice her grief so asked for her mum - a comfort, a loss more familiar. She couldn't understand this #bereavement because of #dementia but her #carers did. #carehomelife

I love books. I love all sorts of reads. Sometimes though, I need more fiction. I consume fiction. I tie this in with #wellbeing, a need for space, for escape when I can't physically go somewhere because of time or weather. It's always good to have a plan B for self care!

My eldest turned 18 today... I remember bringing her into the #carehome as a new mother. The residents so delighted and offering cuddles a plenty. She's grew up very comfortable around #older people and that's a benefit sadly lost to some #generations.

Noticed some info today, instructions for mum's new carers...'pad change' - no assist to toilet, no talk of personal care...just 'pad change' - as if that's the entirety of continence care. When the info is minimised, the person's needs are minimised & independence is minimised.
