The thing to know about landfills is that they emit methane. Properly closed (Fishkill in Staten Island) trap the methane and regenerate electricity. Methane that is released is x80 more harmful to the atmosphere than CO2. We won't eliminate landfills but we can make them more eco-friendly.

Methane is x80 more harmful to the atmosphere than CO2 in the 'short fun' meaning 20 years. Not sure we have a 'long run' if we don't take care of methane now. Methane from extractive services (gas oil minig) is the most common source of methane. States should step up but don't count on TX & LA.
