Had a lovely evening watching the solar eclipse and sunset over looking Stockholm's waterfront. We got cloud cover right at the peak but we still were able to enjoy the event without it being spoiled. 🌄😎 Sidenote: Shocked how many in the crowd had no eye protection 😳 🙈

You ever pick up a read bc of a bookstore recc? I did, but respectfully disagree. Though probably a novel concept in its time, this 1956 classic inspired by the Count of Monte Cristo is steeped in SF pulp adventure (and a few TWs). I did enjoy the idea of human teleportation (jaunting). #scifi

Stars my Destination by Alfred Bester

This book was given the high praise "the best science fiction I ever read." By some random bookstore employee.

I enjoyed it for what it was but the main character was anything but likeable. Never a good sign when the protagonist commits r*pe in chapter 2...this book definitely feels its age.

Finally got around to Iain Bank's Culture series, starting with "Player of Games" Pleasantly surprised how much i enjoyed it. What I liked: - complex alien empire -The Culture's "hedonistic" utopia -artifical minds (ships & drones) living in harmony with organics (humans) -crazy raise in stakes

Player of Games is considered a must read for scifi lovers and has been on my TBR forever. While some may find the pacing slow, I was intresred by protagonist, Gurgeh's growing apathy at being the best player of games in the Culture mixed with his fear that he was slowly growing irrelevant and losing his competitive spirit. All that changes when a dysfunctional drone blackmail him into joining Contact, which sends him on a mission to play games in a distant alien empire that threatens the Culture's way of life.

The tunnel was tight. His shoulders scraped both walls as he crawled on his hands and knees. The floor beneath him felt oddly pliable and spongy, flexing under his weight like a wet carpet. Moisture from the walls soaked into his sleeves.
He tried and failed not to think too hard about what he was crawling through. He imagined a throat that could choose to swallow him at any moment.
“You sure this is safe?” he called ahead. She didn’t answer him, but glanced over her shoulder and offered him a flash of her lemon-slice grin.
“Lovely.” He muttered, trying not to slip as he rounded a bend in the tunnel. His knees were now soaked with…something. “I will need an industrial-strength shower after this.”

But his drink no sooner hit the bar when it was snatched up by a scaley ashen hand. The Xint with one eye had snuck up next to them with surprising speed. The reptile leaned on the bar, uncomfortably close to Joe, and gave a low hiss, thier glassy yellow eye sizing him up. The Xint was smaller than him by at least a foot, but their claws and teeth were quite formidable.
“You look soft, human. I thought your kind would be bigger.”
They hissed a sharp laugh and ruefully twisted their tongue in the stolen glass, slurping up its contents.
He returned their cruel gaze with a bemused expression. “You enjoying that?” Joe asked, probably against his better judgement. The Xint’s large eye quivered. They reared forward, spines fully up, but Joe refused to budge.
Shit. He hadn’t even been here ten minutes and he was already being challenged. The Xint’s gang pushed in behind them to watch, waiting to see how Joe was going to react to their leader’s provocation. To them, he was probably tonight's entertainment.
How annoying.

It was an alien.
She tensed, lips pressed into a thin line. It shouldn’t have surprised her, other species traveled with Esponian crews all the time. But still, her heart quickened and sent a viridescent wave of apprehension through her bioluminescent markings. She bit her lip, leaning closer to get a better look. She just hoped this alien was one of the friendlier kind.
Slowly, she crawled toward the survivor’s face, hidden beneath the pod’s life-support mask. The visor was fogged, streaked with condensation. She hesitated, then gingerly gripped the mask and tugged. With a sticky pop, the seal broke and peeled away.
A pale face appeared before her—cold and still, yet fragile in its deathlike repose. Thier eyes remained closed, framed by dark lashes. Thier lips, tinged faintly blue, parted slightly. A black tangle of something—clung damply to their forehead. It looked like…hair?
Minns’ eyes widened, a golden flash of wonder rippling through her head fronds. I know what you are, you’re a—
“Human. Male.” MX interjected, as if reading her mind. “You should not have pulled him out so quickly. The pod requires several intervals to stabilize—”

The Nostromo's interiors are really what makes this ship iconic, it felt rough, lived in . The design is retro by today's standards, with the chunky tech, bulkheads, and blinking lights, but confined spaces and creepy corridors make it a perfect backdrop for terror! 🚀💀 🧵3/3

It was even darker down here than in the spine, and he worried that if he ventured much farther, he might get turned around—or worse, fall into something.

But then a soft sigh caught his ear. He turned to see a graceful figure moving amongst the pipes and hangings, her form accentuated by the patterns of gentle light streaming over her. A halo of light shimmered around her face, while delicate head fronds, numerous and slender, cascaded past her shoulders. They pulsed softly with shades of deep oceanic blue, the color gradually shifting as it traveled from her scalp to the tips in a smooth, rhythmic flow.

Her large, dark eyes sparkled with concentration as she studied something in front of her, a charming crinkle of focus creasing the bridge of her smooth, dark nose. A constellation of bioluminescent markings freckled her cheeks and forehead, echoing the pattern of human freckles. She was so captivating, he couldn’t help but stare, awestruck.
