The Trump administration has discontinued the IRS Direct File program, a free, government-run tax filing service, ahead of the 2026 tax season, citing low usage and high costs. Despite high user satisfaction and expansion to 25 states, the program was shut down following pressure from tax preparation industry lobbyists, reverting taxpayers to commercial services.
