To celebrate #greensat, I've finally resumed planting the many seedlings from this past spring (+ one unfortunate sedge, which I bought in October of last year...oops) Thanks for the figurative nudge, fellow Bsky native plant gardeners ✌️ #nativeplants #canadiangardening

The front garden is still full of #flowers that have either been blooming for a few weeks, since mid-summer, or, in a few cases, since late spring #bloomscrolling #flowersonfriday
A section of a flower bed; yellow yarrow, the first plant to flower in the spring, still has plenty of colour. The yarrow is surrounded by honey-scented sweet alyssum, hidcote blue lavender and autumn joy sedum, most of which attract and sustain pollinators in between the flowering of native plants

That's amazing! And it helps puts things into perspective I don't think I could plant 300 but I can plant the 100 or so that I have 😂

Wow! Thanks for the inspiration to get the rest of mine planted this weekend 😅 How many did you end up planting in this space?

Aw, Zoey is an adorable little rogue (meant as a compliment)! My dog is a 13-year-old husky x whose rabbit chasing days are long behind her. She used to whine at the patio door if she sensed a rabbit; now, she can walk past four bunnies before she notices a fifth
A husky x lays in a sphinx-like pose, struggling to stay awake among the smells and noises of mid-spring (she is surrounded by an explosion of kid toys)

Signs you have an older dog: The once-insistent bunny-detector is now completely oblivious to the bun-bun sitting in the #nativeplants garden (So far, the only plant he or she has eaten this season that I really cared about is my showy tick-trefoil) #gardensky
A small bunny with brown, black, and white hair hides among several browning native plants, including Joe pye weed, little bluestem, and a showy (Canada) tick-trefoil that's been chewed down by said rabbit

Ok, now I want to try this because I like the taste of butternut squash over pumpkin (which is edible only with a significant amount of whipping cream) Do you have a recipe? Or can you just sub in squash for any pumpkin pie recipe?

Most of the early fall flowers have now arrived #nativeplants #sixonsaturday #bloomscrolling
A series of flowers currently blooming in or adjacent to my yard

Clockwise top left: an aster with lavender-blue rays grows against a weathered fence; a section of flat-topped white aster is planted in front of a ninebark (shrub); a dense spire of spiky pale pink flower, which interestingly is a purple giant hyssop, is planted near the above-mentioned white aster; another type of bluish asters (the nursery tags may have been mixed up; one is heart leaf aster and the other is smooth blue aster, but I haven't had a chance to look into it); and across from my house, a dense patch of goldenrod (type unknown) grows alongside what looks like white panicled asters

I assumed the honeywort wouldn't explode by planting it in a container, then placing said container in part shade I was quite mistaken #flowers #bloomscrolling
A zoomed out shot of my 14 inch planter, which has a clover-like white gomphrena and a peachy-pink thumbelina zinnia. The vast majority of the planter is honeywort (cerinthe), which have bell shaped flowers that range from magenta to bluish purple

It's not a native plant, but the bees love it, so it's been added to my list of container annuals

If I have to make multiple trips to the hospital in one week, at least I get to enjoy the view of the #nativeplants garden by the entrance #pinkmon #bloomscrolling
A close-up of a small section of a very large, circular garden. Still fresh-looking coneflowers are the stars of the show, surrounded by mostly green foliage, except here, where tiny bluish-purple (vervain?) or small white flowers (looks like foxglove beardtongue but it's the first day of fall?!) poke out

Elsewhere in the garden where still blooming butterfly weeds and asters

Illumination #nativeplants #flowersonfriday
A section of my front garden that has been given a native plant makeover. The sun is starting to peek over my neighbours' roofs, highlighting the shapes of the plants with its brightness

Black eyed Susans grow beside butterfly weed with anise hyssop (whose spikes are full tiny purple flowers) and gray goldenrod (one of the three plants has buds but no signs of yellow yet)

Faded purple cornflowers grow in the center of this bed but appear half cropped out of the image on the left

This takes me back to my teen years. I was at a camp in northern Ontario and I asked the three counselors there to say water to hear the differences (one was from the UK, another from Australia and the third was from Philly). It was quite the auditory experience 😂

My son found this one across from my house in an area with tons of goldenrod. While I have a volunteer in my backyard, the majority of the goldenrod I grew this year and likely won't flower until next season All that to say: by growing more goldenrod, I hope to see more beetles in the future!

Oh, the age-old gardening question: Is it better to briefly see it a flower before wildlife consumes it, or to never have seen it at all? (Or something like that) #bluetue #nativeplants #bloomscrolling

Stretch break #bwfri #coloraday #pollinators
A bee rubbed two legs over and behind its head before leaving the center of this bindweed flower, appearing to be deeply stretching before returning to the task of pollinating the nearby flowers

(I took away the colour from the image because the focus shifts to the bee, instead of an invasive plant which I despise)

Okay, this makes way more sense. I couldn't figure out how you could've hit a fan while tacking nails into a wall I assumed: A) you meant a standing fan; or B) you must have some wind-up while hammering 😂

Thought I found a dead praying mantis this morning It was in fact very much alive (Much to my preschooler's horror)
A large greenish brown praying mantis is preparing to fight me from my fingertip after I naively thought I was helping an insect out

(Background: I found what I thought was a dead praying mantis on some concrete. So I picked it up to move it to a planter, giving it a more dignified resting place. It burst into furious life)

When goodbyes and hellos begin to overlap #stunday #bloomscrolling
A view of my front garden in the morning light: the purple coneflowers toward the back are fading, along with phlox and lavender. The sedums have recently begun to bloom and it looks like some grey goldenrod may also bloom shortly. One very awkward and spindly purpletop verbena at the front refuses to stop trying

I completely agree and it doesn't stop at the museum. Too many people lately seem to think it's more stupid to have hope than it is to accept defeat and quit Giving up should be the last choice, not the first

It's September in a semi-rural community, which means sunflowers and goldenrod are practically everywhere #yellowthur #bloomscrolling

Many nearby farms feature large stands of full-sized sunflowers, making me wish I had more space in my yardA close-up of a clump of volunteer goldenrod, growing in my background, (a large patch of goldenrod is growing across the road from my house, so I assume wildlife has helped spread it around)
