True. Joni Mitchell pointed that out in her song "Woodstock" back in the summer of '69. She wrote we are "billion year old carbon" but we were actually forged in carbon-rich stars 5 to 7+ billion years ago through a process called "triple-alpha" where three helium nuclei fuse together.

The 1898 date refers specifically to Orville Gibson's method for building carved, archtop stringed instruments. It didn't cover the specific F2 shape, "points" or scrolling body. Just protected the revolutionary structural principles that separated a Gibson from all traditional mandolins of the day.

By 1911, Gibson was trying to keep up with massive commercial demand. The upper bass-side point (the "third point") was a nightmare for production: required extra, intricate wood bending, created a structural weak spot prone to cracking and it didn't actually add anything to the acoustic projection.

Taharqa @juliusraymills.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
1911 was a transition. Gibson phased out the older 3-point shape for the new 2-point design. Early F-2s w/a 2-point Florentine (F) body began in 1910. Gibson made the 2-point in 1910 to 1911 then replaced the extra ornamental bass point on all future F2s. In 1911 a few 2 & 3-point F2s were made..

This one is actually a three-point, while yours is a two-point style.

Very cool. Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Speaking of loops, your close-up of the headstock reveals that the scroll there appears to be original and not repaired. So that's not a condition issue with your vintage instrument.

He's a longtime supporter of the mass murder of innocent women, children and non-combatants in Gaza and claims to be an atheist and a "humanist" while he's a cheerleader for Israeli war criminals and their genocide in Gaza. Ask him if he'll believe in Hell when he's burning to a crisp there, please.

The one and only Godfather of Soul and most sampled artist in the history of music! Live, he often took over the drum kit and was known for his unique, self-taught style—often playing left-open-handed on a standard right-handed drum kit. He played studio drums for his '62 recording of "Night Train."

Congratulations, Ms. Attiah! Arrears and legal fees are part of the judgement, I assume? "...I bought a ticket, I caught a plane to Spain, went to a party down a red brick road, there were a lot of pretty people there, reading Rolling Stone, reading Vouge..." (Joni Mitchell "California")

Joni did the Troubadour in '68 with Dave Van Ronk. Still blows my mind that CK recorded Tapestry while Joni recorded Blue practically next door at A&M records Hollywood in January '71. Is it true that James and Joni did uncredited background vocals for your "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," CK? Wow

I'll never vote for an apologist for an Israeli war criminal and a man who cheers on the targeted killing of women and children and infants. He's a perpetrator of genocide. I encourage him to just fade away, pops.

Just so you know: A "leftist" is a person who supports the political left. This means they favor social equality, fairness, and government help for people in need. The name comes from the French Revolution (1789 - 1799), when people who wanted change sat on the left side of the meeting room.

4/4 After that tour, Cliff's 1981 LP "Give the People What They Want" was blocked by SA censors until he bypassed them by renaming it "Bongo Man Has Come." Soon after, Sticky brought that revolutionary roots energy straight into the Nassau studio to track with you, Tina and Steven Stanley. Genius.

3/4 A year prior, May 1980, Sticky was with Jimmy on an intense South Africa tour. They climbed Table Mountain near Robben Island, beating bongos for hours in a defiant spiritual tribute to Nelson Mandela. That stand panicked the apartheid regime & triggered an outright ban of the band and Jimmy.

2/4 May 11, 1981, the day Marley died—I drove from Palo Alto to SF to interview Jimmy Cliff at the Old Waldorf for the Stanford Daily. I was front & center taking photos when Jimmy did "Bongo Man" a capella on a single conga. Sticky was the literal heartbeat of Jimmy’s Oneness Band then and drummed.

1/4 Great to hear about Tom Tom Club at Compass Point in the Bahamas and to know Sticky Thompson only tracked on that one record with you, Chris. You locked in an epic historical timeline for me personally. My music-loving gang at Stanford back then were huge fans of yours & had big crushes on Tina.

Hard to believe Tina's now 75. Her father was U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Ralph Weymouth. Whatever happened to her sisters, Lani and Laura? Brother Yann designed the Salvador Dalí Museum in FL. Your idea to do the James Brown bit in "Genius of Love," Chris? Did you do any other work with Sticky Thompson?

...placed the tiny mother-of-pearl dot in the center, and meticulously rubbed gold leaf into the smaller leaf-shaped carvings. Because humans did the engraving and inlaying, look closely at all eight pegs: tiny, variations in the wire curls and flower placement. No two pegs are completely identical!

Taharqa @juliusraymills.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
While the base peg was molded by a machine the artistry that followed was entirely done by human hands. A craftsman used hand-held engraving tools to cut tiny, precise channels into the face of each celluloid peg. Once the channels were cut, artists manually bent sterling silver wire into grooves...

Inherited my F2 from great-grandparents who were in a mandolin orchestra in WI. Not carved pegs: celluloid with gold inlays done by hand by L. Handel. Your scroll above pegs here is damaged and repaired. Not the original (celluloid) pick-guard. Sold ours to Gryphon Strings Palo Alto, CA for 4K 2003.

A "dear John letter" to bezos here. It refers to agenda setting in media: the power of news organizations to shape public priorities by choosing which stories to cover and how much attention to give them. Bezos bought the rag solely to shape political dialogue and perpetuate his oligarchical agenda.
