Lastly, Metroid Dread. It has elements from each of the 2D games, and seems to be the beginning of a new story arc that explores the effect that Samus' adventures have had on her body. This one is the best indication of what Ravenous is likely to be similar to, since it's from the same studio.

If you really want to play Zero Metroid, I recommend you do it at this point in the series. It reuses some mechanics from Fusion, but I think it makes more sense to play it now since it gets a bit more into Samus' backstory than Metroid 1, and that's relevant for Dread.

Metroid Fusion is referred to as Metroid 4 in its opening, but is kind of neglected since it came out on the same day as the original Metroid Prime. It's my favorite game in the whole series.

luckily, Nintendo has had the good sense not to remake Super Metroid. It's a gorgeous game. However, I think having the context from the previous two makes it better; its map contains multiple references and jokes that call back to Metroid 1.

I also recommend you play Metroid II: Return of Samus for the Game Boy over either of its remakes, either the fan remake AM2R or the official remake Samus Returns. Once more, both remakes are very indebted to Zero Mission and Super aesthetically, jettisoning the original's sensibilities.

I recommend you play the original Metroid over Zero Mission, for a few reasons. Zero Mission is too indebted aesthetically to Super Metroid so it can kind of steal that game's thunder. There are also a few jokes in Super that are kind of ruined by the way ZM change it around e.g. Kraid.
