If you haven’t gotten pelted by sideways rain, have you truly attended Left of the Dial? (not derogatory)
A person wearing a periwinkle blue raincoat stands in an elevator… water drips off the raincoat. It’s fine though. Sometimes you have to get drenched in order to see so many amazing bands.

And then Library Card, who were amazing, as expected. Very happy I woke up at 4am to make sure we got Wednesday tickets.
Library Card play in Arminiuskerk at Left of the Dial. The photo shows the singer and bassist.Library Card at Left of the Dial. This manages to capture all of the band members (kinda) in one shot!Library Card play at Left of the Dial. The lighting is blue and a bit eerie? Maybe I am leaning to hard on "eerie" because, well, it is October.

Traditioneel pre LOTD biertje ( sans Jasper for now)
Two beers sit on a table in a bar near Rotown in Rotterdam. An arm rests on the table—you can see two wristbands on the aforementioned arm. One for the Wednesday night shows and the other for the regular festivities 🥳

Outside a theatre in Rotterdam, the crew are hanging more Left of the Dial banners on columns. Currently, there are L, T, and D banners—the O is next

They weren’t hanging when we left for Den Haag this morning but were waiting when we returned. #lotd26

The first of multiple shipments of books arrived in my office today, and it was a delight to unpack them. Not quite a school book fair, but working as an evaluator/researcher gets close some days.
A white bookshelf holds a growing library of children’s books, including Bearplane, The Proudest Blue, Soul Food Sunday, Lola Out Loud, and many more that I would list if I could read all the titles. (The print is a little small!)

My mother’s gray, formerly stray/feral cat, Earl. Absolute sweetheart.
A formerly stray grey cat lounges on a cat tree. After six months of hanging out near the house, he decided that he’d rather be an indoor cat. He made the right choice—he is a very sweet and cuddly cat.

Our Fennec is similarly ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ at the vet. He also got a clean bill of health yesterday. Perhaps a floof trait?

Fridays are good, but Bandcamp Fridays are even better.
A screenshot of the music I purchased today (Bandcamp Friday). Baby You're A Winner the new Grandmas House release. Human Assholes from Personal Trainer. An EP from morêsakys. The upcoming Sweeping Promises release. The latest Iguana Death Cult album and an EP of theirs I've been meaning to buy for a while. Finally the Midsommaren EP that I've been meaning to purchase for an even longer while.

"Your complaint has been noted in the system. We will issue a decision on its validity in four to six weeks."
A large black cat named Thomas is pictured wearing a tie with a skull and crossbones pattern. It's fitting because he is a pirate (one-eyed) cat. His expression is judgemental.

A sticker encouraging a vote for the Pirate Party. Spotted in Rotterdam during the 2025 Dutch Elections. The sticker tells the reader that the Piratenpartij will never give you up, let you down, run around, desert you, make you cry, say goodbye, tell a lie, or hurt you. The sticker is a political campaign Rickroll. It is beautiful.

A lovely Homer! A Fennec offering in return.
A medium-long-haired black cat looks at the camera from his position lying on a sheet covering a couch. The cat's name is Fennec. He is lying on his back, front legs stretched out in front of him, and back legs pointed towards the ceiling. He often stretches out like this because he's a very funny, cute, odd, and dopey boy.

The Empty Threats at Uniek during Left of the Dial. Amazing performance—one of those bands who are good on record, and absolutely amazing live. More of The Empty Threats at Uniek. Same! I get the Mountain Eagle delivered from Whitesburg, KY every week to my home in DC. Worth every penny of the $41.00 a year subscription.
A picture of the front page of The Mountain Eagle (Whitesburg Kentucky). There is a picture of a Turkey sauntering across a four lane road. The headline asks “why did the turkey cross the road?” The caption continues, “After a week, it's still crossing back and forth across US 119, KY 15 and KY 2034 at Pine Mountain Junction, making cars swerve to miss it and sometimes stopping traffic as it strolls to the other side. A wildlife biologist was expected to come and move it along, but it was still there at press time. While it was enjoying McDonald's last week, it had moved to Pine Mountain Grill by lunchtime on Tuesday.”

A large black pirate cat, Thomas, looks at the camera with interest. He has only one eye (the result of some rough time on the streets), but he is not one to let that bother him. He embraces the pirate life.

I have just discovered @pghgraffiti.bsky.social and this gives me the chance to post an old but still favorite from Bloomfield circa 2005.
Photograph of a mailbox in Pittsburgh. There is a wheat paste of a face on the mailbox and someone has scrawled Run Away on the box. It’s just weird and random and very Bloomfield mid 2000s.

Always, says Thomas.
Thomas, a large black cat, sits on a couch and stares at the camera. Thomas has one eye. When he six, he was found wandering; he was underweight and had a severe eye infection. He was adopted shortly after he was found and is now eight years old and very happy and healthy. He does not let his altered depth perception get in the way of jumping to the top of the cat tree—the perfect perch from which to smack the annoying younger cats.

The best thing I can say about Jefferson City is that I liked the people I worked with! There aren’t a lot of hotels in town but there is a hotel that has been seemingly frozen in time since the 80s. (This was a few years ago—maybe they’ve updated since?)
Capitol Plaza Hotel atrium. There is a several story fountain with colored lights and the vibe is 1980s prom.

Two listeners in Pittsburgh: do I know you?
The image is a screenshot from the Spotify page of a band named Total Luck. The description reads: "Bringing a new ferocity and energy to any space that will have them, Total Luck combine the minimalism and harshness of No Wave with the fast and chaotic thrash of Hardcore. Switching between spoken word and typically loud, punk vocals, Total luck have quickly found their identity in Birmingham's music scene with their robust sound."

They're good! But what is odd is that they have 54 monthly listeners--and two of them are from Pittsburgh. Unexpected!
