Yet, recent actions by Mariel Dawson (VP of Marketing at MacKids) undermines these principles and poses a direct conflict with our work and identities. Join me in urging Macmillan to hold Mariel to the same ethical and professional standards we are held to, and to protect the integrity of our industry. Use your power to reach out to your agent and/or editor expressing your concerns and asking for Macmillan to take action. This isn’t a freedom of speech issue, this is a professional conflict of interest that negatively affects Macmillan and MacKids as a whole. Targeting Queer Books and Authors: Project 2025 specifically seeks to ban queer books and advocates for queer authors to be charged as sex criminals, creating a clear ethical and professional conflict, especially for Macmillan’s LGBTQ+ authors.

Double Standard in Morality Clause: Macmillan authors are held to a Morality Clause that allows termination if actions cause public outrage. Mariel Dawson has caused significant public and industry backlash and should be held to this same standard. Reputational Damage to Macmillan: Mariel’s actions are damaging to Macmillan’s reputation, undermining the work of teams and authors who work hard to uphold Macmillan’s values and mission. Ethics and Professionalism: As authors, we don’t want to work with a marketing lead who openly supports initiatives that threaten our work and personal identities. Mariel Dawson’s views render her unable to fulfill her role both ethically and effectively. *Personal Stance: (Optional) Authors may want to express that they will not work with Mariel Dawson, as her actions conflict with their personal values and professional needs.
